JANUARY 2014 Volume LXIX Number 8 Official Publication of the Stark County Power Squadron A Unit of District 7 and the United States Power Squadrons Sail and Power Boating; America s Boating Club 2013-2014 BRIDGE COMMANDER Cdr James F Hoffee, SN 330-499-7400 jashoffee@gmail.com EXECUTIVE OFFICER D/Lt Lynda C. Leque, N 330-832-9625 lyndaleque@sssnet.com ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICER Lt/C James J. Kosmos, P 330-854-3026 uspsjk@yahoo.com EDUCATIONAL OFFICER P/D/C Kenneth T. Thomas Hancock, P 330-499-3660 thancock@neo.rr.com FROM THE COMMANDER Hurrah! A New Year! Boats and boating activities with Stark County Power Squadron are nearing. I know winter has set in but the first bright sign of spring is almost here. The weather is fright-full but the Mid America Boat Show at the I-X Center in Cleveland can be delightfull! Your commander is signed up Saturday evening to help man the USPS booth. This is an excellent time to get in the right frame of mind to promote USPS, our classes, our seminars, boating safety, and public services like our vessel safety checks. Hopefully I might get the opportunity to mention SCPS's ABC Safe Boating Class starting 11 February. This is a date that all SCPS members can mention. Next "Sounding's" I will try to report more on what's new at the show. Regarding SCPS for 2014-2015, I just read the nominating committee s report and all looks swell except for that we can use a member to accept the position as an Administrative Officer on our Bridge. SCPS will really Cdr James F Hoffee, SN appreciate and most importantly benefit if a member would accept this needed position. Even though we may not all be sailors it sure would be "smooth sailing" for SCPS if that should happen. Be sure to see the most recent Winter edition of the USPS Ensign magazine. On page 33, SCPS is featured with their float in the Hall of Fame Community Parade back in July. Congratulations on this national recognition! On a bright note, there are two words in your commander's vocabulary that are the most powerful. These are 'love' and the other is the 'sun'. They both share more power and good above all. Those that know me possibly can answer which one I like the best. It goes both ways for me, but at least the latter (the sun) is getting better every day with out my doing. Our sun is now on it's way back to greet us in our northern hemisphere, getting stronger, bringing more daylight and eventually fairer winds our way! Hurray!

Page 2 WHAT S NEW IN EDUCATION SEO P/D/C KENNETH T. LEQUE, SN Happy New Year from the Educa on Department. We will be star ng the year with two public boa ng classes. One starts Tuesday, 11 February for four weeks and one starts 20 May, Tuesday and Thursday for two weeks. Both at the Acme Fresh Market, Dogwood Center Shopping Center in North Canton. All the ABC3 classes will be held in the Community room from 7 to 9 PM. Also, we will be finishing AP class this month. Next we are planning Engine Maintenance or Marine Electronics in the Spring. If you are interested in these or any other classes let me know. As the wintry winds blow, it's comforting to know that we're past the Winter Solstice and the days will once again be getting longer. Hurrah! We're on our way to boating season! Well, maybe not quite, but in the meantime, come to the next SCPS Meeting 9 January at 1930 and warm up with a bowl of homemade CHILI and the trimmings shared with your SCPS boating friends! This will be the first meeting of 2014 and time to start planning for the upcoming year! With a new slate of officers and lots of activities ahead, what better time to get active with your squadron! It takes just a little bit of effort from everyone to make the coming year successful for all of us! Volunteer to present a program, set up an event, teach or participate in a class, call and promote membership, attend meetings and conferences, and continue the bond of friendship with your SCPS and D7 friends. When you're not there, you are missed! As we look ahead to 2014, the first big event is the Cleveland Boat Show. You can volunteer to work the D7 Booth and have the opportunity to promote safe boating education. Contact Jeff Evans for more information or sign up on line at www.signupgenius.com/go/boat6/637232. Copy this link into your browser and choose the time that you would like. January is also the month that USPS will have the biggest 100th Anniversary Celebration of the year in Jacksonville, Florida! 26 January- 2 February, 2014 is the Annual National Meeting. Those attending will experience a memorable celebration of 100 years of boating education, civic projects, and social activities! Our own associate member and District 7 Commander Craig Fraser, SN, will proudly represent D7 by escorting the D7 100th Anniversary Ensign to the podium during the Annual Meeting. A St. John's River boat parade will be one of the highlights of the weekend followed by a fireworks display. The Saturday evening banquet and National Change of Watch will be a grand Mardi Gras Ball with National EXO Robert Baldridge, SN, taking the helm as the new Chief Commander! What an exciting time for USPS! I wish you all could be there! Ken & I are also looking forward to cruising with approximately 400 fellow USPS members on the "Centennial Cruise" on the Holland America Cruise ship following the Annual meeting! Get involved in 2014. Your Squadron needs you!

JANUARY 2014 Page 4 FROM THE ADMINSTRATIVE OFFICER LT/C JAMES J. KOSMOS, P Red and Green, Red and Green I haven t seen that much red and green since the Seamanship course. But that s how it was at the SCPS Annual Holiday Party. The setting was magnificent with great views of the city of Canton, while Kevin Klemm filled the room with the sounds of holiday music. The company was great, and the conversation flowed. Introductions were made by our own Executive Officer D/Lt. Lynda C. Leque, N and dinner was preceded with a solemn prayer lead by our P/C Chaplain Glenn E. Swope, P. Special guests included D7 Commander Craig Fraser, SN, and Lt Liana Mihalca, SN and Past District Cdrs Robert Ball, SN and Ken Leque, SN. Special thanks to members of APS and MOV for attending! It was a pleasure to see past members P/C Ken & Patty Plotts and always a pleasure to greet our own P/R/C G. Richard Dunbar, SN, and his lovely wife Wilma! It was nice to see everyone dressed to the nines in their holiday colors. At one point of the evening Frosty Jr. was spotted outside on the railing (Gosh I hope he didn t jump!). As usual I learned some more interesting facts about some of our fellow members including some funny and interesting childhood adventures, some fun and interesting boating adventures as well as some future wishes and plans. As we spend time with our family and friends during this time of year my wish for you is to have a safe holiday season, in addition to Health, Happiness and Prosperity to all of you and your loved ones in the coming year This is truly the season to be grateful.
