St George s College Scholarships and Bursaries Introduction The College offers a range of merit and needs based scholarships and bursaries that are provided as fee remissions. A substantial proportion of the scholarships and bursaries are provided by individuals and organisations that are associated with the College. The Foundation St George s College Foundation Inc. was formed in 1988. Its purpose is to attract financial support from the College s alumni and friends for the long-term support and benefit of the College. It is independent of the College and is governed by a Board elected annually by its Members. Under its Constitution, membership is offered to people who have made gifts or given notification of an intended bequest at certain levels thereby qualifying as Member, Fellow, Trustee or Governor of the Foundation. The Foundation is one of the main contributors to the funds of a number of the Scholarships. All awards are conditional upon on the recipient s residency at St George s College. Scholarships for Residents Entering Their First Year of University Studies Reynolds Scholarship Established by The Georgians (the College s Alumni Association) and now supported by the Foundation, the Scholarship perpetuates the memory of Dr J H Reynolds, a much-loved former Warden of St George s College. Commencing undergraduate studies at UWA Demonstrated high academic achievement judged by ATAR result or equivalent Value: ⅓ fee remission for three years - subject to ongoing academic achievement, maintaining a WAM (Weighted Average Mark) of 80% or above The Winthrop Scholarship The Winthrop Scholarship was established by the Board of St George s College in recognition of Sir John Winthrop Hackett KCMG LLD, the Founder of the College. The scholarship was awarded from 1941 through to 1972 before being reinstated in 1993. Commencing undergraduate studies at UWA Demonstrated high academic achievement judged by ATAR result or equivalent Demonstrates good character, leadership qualities and social conscience Special consideration may be given to students whose circumstances mean they require assistance to reside at St George s College. Value: ⅓ of College fees for one year The Phillip Roberts Memorial Scholarship Initiated by colleagues and friends and now supported by the Foundation, this Scholarship was established in memory of Phillip Roberts, a Senior Tutor at St George s College for 18 years. Mr Roberts was a lecturer in Agricultural Economics at UWA, an Official of the Western Australian Department of Agriculture, Secretary of the State Committee of CSIRO and Secretary of the Food and Agricultural Organisation of the United Nations. Commencing undergraduate studies at UWA Graduated from a regional school Demonstrated high academic achievement judged by ATAR result or equivalent Demonstrates: good character, leadership qualities and social achievement Value: ⅓ of College fees for one year The Eric Glasgow Memorial Bursary This Bursary was awarded for the first time in 2009 and made possible by a generous bequest from former tutor Professor Eric Ferguson Glasgow. Sister Eileen Heath Scholarship The Sister Eileen Heath Scholarship is provided by the Anglican Diocese of Perth, in memory of Sister Eileen, an Anglican Deaconess in Alice Springs who worked to promote the education and welfare of local aboriginal children, as well as general aboriginal welfare. Regional student who will particularly benefit from residence at St George s College Anglican association Under 18 at commencement of their tertiary studies Good academic performance judged by ATAR result or equivalent Demonstrates good character Value: up to ½ of the College fees for one year Scholarships for Returning Residents Continuing Their University Studies R F L & C H Glover Memorial Bursary This Bursary was established by Georgian Dr John Glover, through the Foundation, in memory of his parents, Rhoda Florence Lulu and Cecil Herbert Glover. Strong academic achievement based on UWA results Focused on Natural or Earth Sciences with a particular preference for those with a major in Geology Demonstrated participation in sports, student affairs or community orientated extra-curricular activities Special consideration given to students living outside the Perth metropolitan area, who will particularly benefit from residence at St George s College Value: 1/4 of the College fees for one year (previous recipients are Alcoa of Australia Ltd Engineering Scholarship This Scholarship was established through the Foundation by Alcoa of Australia. Resident who has completed their first year of undergraduate engineering studies and is continuing into their second. Academically promising, as demonstrated by UWA results. All-rounder: sports, community involvement, leadership qualities, extra-curricular activities Special consideration given to female students Value: 1/4 of College fees for one year (previous recipients are Grecian Snook Memorial Bursary Established through the Foundation, the Grecian Snook Memorial Bursary was set up in memory of the late Grecian Snook who served nobly as a wife and mother at Meckering during the stressful pioneering era from 1887 onwards. Continuing resident enrolled at UWA, with a focus on Agricultural or Environmental Science or Botany Academically promising, as demonstrated by UWA results Demonstrates admirable involvement in sports, student affairs and community orientated extra-curricular activities Special consideration given to regional students with a particular need for residence at St George s College Value: 1/4 of College fees for one year (previous recipients are Olsen/Bell Scholarship This Scholarship was established by a bequest to the Foundation made by the late C O Olsen. Continuing resident entering their second year of studies at UWA Achieved at least a Distinction average (WAM of 70+) Two awarded: one for a resident primarily studying Humanities and Social Sciences, including Commerce; another for a resident primarily studying Science, Engineering, Computing or Mathematics. College Club Bursary The Bursary was established in 2014 to recognise a student returning to St George s College who contributed significantly to College life in the previous year. Returning resident Made a significant contribution to the College community in the previous year Value: $750 for one year Knight Family Scholarship This Scholarship was established by Georgian Peter Knight (1960) and his family to encourage the study and performance of music at the College. Criteria*: Resident who has successfully completed a year s study at UWA and will continue at St George s College for the following semester Demonstrated a love of music at school and university, with preference given to those who are likely to study postgraduate music Strong academic record Demonstrated participation in College affairs, student affairs or community activities, as well as care and respect for their fellows Special consideration given to students who live outside the Perth metropolitan area and will particularly benefit from residence at St George s College *St George s College has an expectation that the recipient of this award performs for the College community at least twice during their tenure Value: ⅓ of College fees for one year (previous recipients are Scholarships for All Residents Studying at University Peter Goodeve Memorial Bursary Established in 2012 in memory of Peter Edward Goodeve, the Bursary was made possible by the Goodeve Foundation. Demonstrates academic merit based on UWA marks, ATAR or equivalent Demonstrates good character, leadership qualities and social achievement Special consideration given to those studying Earth Sciences, especially Geophysics/Geoscience Special consideration given to students who need financial assistance to reside at St George s College Value: ½ of College fees for one year (previous applicants are Talison Lithium Scholarship Since 2012 Talison Lithium, a leading global producer of lithium with its major operation at Greenbushes, has supported the College through three half-fee annual scholarships. Western Australian student who graduated from a regional school, with preference given to those from the South West Pursuing studies relevant to mining, within a Bachelor of Science or equivalent at UWA Demonstrates academic merit based on ATAR or UWA results Demonstrates good character, leadership qualities and social conscience Special consideration given to students who need financial assistance to reside at St George s College Lindsay Goldsmith Bursary This Bursary was established in 2011 by Georgian Lindsay Goldsmith; a student here in the mid-1940s. Demonstrates academic merit based on ATAR or UWA results Demonstrates good character, leadership qualities and social achievement Special consideration given to students in difficult financial circumstances Value: ⅓ of College fees for one year W T Harrison Tertiary Bursaries These Bursaries were established in memory of Walter Tom Harrison, a much-loved community pharmacist in Wembley for over 30 years. It was established to enable needy students to stay at St George s College. J M Wolff Scholarship This Scholarship was established through the Foundation by Rabbi William Wolff, in memory of his brother Dr Joachim Wolff. Dr Wolff was a lecturer in the UWA Department of German and a tutor at St George s College, with a deep love of classical music. Studies or intends to study a music degree at UWA while residing at St George s College Demonstrates academic merit based on UWA results Conditions of Award: The successful applicant will give or organise at least two concerts for the College community during their tenure as the Wolff Music Scholar. Value: 1/4 of College fees for one year (previous applicants are Boronia Scholarship This Scholarship was established.through the generous contribution of Georgian Frank Owen. Western Australian regional student Special consideration given to those studying economics, engineering, medicine, or theology. L C Hodge Bursary This Bursary was established through the Foundation in memory of the late Lesley Cameron Hodge. Studying Science, with a particular focus on Agricultural Science units Academically promising Demonstrates all-round qualities sport, student life, community Special consideration given to students living outside the Perth metropolitan area and/or those experiencing difficult financial circumstances Jeremy Cheang Memorial Scholarship This Scholarship was established in 2012 in memory of former resident Jeremy Cheang. Western Australian regional student Highly gifted academically minimum ATAR of 97.5 or equivalent UWA results Enrolled in a Bachelor of Philosophy or Bachelor of Science at UWA, majoring in Chemistry Preference given to those studying Organic Chemistry Value: $2,500 Value: 1/4 of College fees for one year (previous recipients are The Fred Sadka Scholarship This scholarship was established by a bequest to the Foundation made in memory of former resident Fred Sadka. Academically promising Special consideration given to those with a special need for residence at St George s College Value: 1/6 of College fees for one year (previous recipients are Awards for Academic Performance The Argyle Scholarships and Exhibitions: These awards need no application; they are awarded automatically by the College to eligible residents. They were initiated in 2013 in recognition of Georgian and former Board Chairman Rory Argyle, who has been a constant contributor to the College and has dedicated many years of his life striving for its improvement and success. Argyle Scholarships are awarded to: Incoming residents who achieve an ATAR over 98.5 Returning residents with a Weighted Average Mark over 85 in the preceding Academic Year Value: $1000 Argyle Exhibitions are awarded to: Incoming residents who have achieved an ATAR between 97 and 98.5 Returning residents with a Weighted Average Mark between 80 and 85 in the preceding Academic Year Value: $750 6 St George s College
Travel Prizes Gascoine Memorial Bursary This Bursary was established through the Foundation by the family of the late Lewis Rose Gascoine. He believed that travel and experience (not necessarily connected with the chosen field of study) was an integral part of the improvement of education. He also recognised that some students were disadvantaged by not having the means or the financial support to undertake such travel. Application/ UWA undergraduate who will continue in residence for the next academic year Desire to work, study or participate in a useful activity outside Perth during a university vacation period, with the object of furthering their broader educational experience Application must outline the travel experience they hope to undertake and how it will enhance their university experience Value: 1/4 of College fees towards travel and living expenses (previous recipients Maxwell Newton Scholarship This Scholarship was established through the Foundation in memory of Maxwell Newton. He was the founding editor of The Australian newspaper and a multi-talented man of ideas. It is designed to assist students to broaden their thinking through travel and so stretch their capacity to contribute innovative thought to the Australian way of life. Application: Applicants must outline the travel experience they hope to undertake and how it will enhance their university experience. Value: 1/6 of College fees for the year awarded Victorian Georgian Travel Prize This travel bursary was established by the Victorian-based Georgians. It is designed to assist a St George s College resident to visit Melbourne; in order to expand the horizons of a student who may not otherwise have had the chance to experience the cultural, sporting and other special interest attractions of such a global city. It also hopes to expand the links between current residents of the College and Georgians living in Melbourne. Application/ Resident returning to the College for the following year Resident must be available to travel for at least one week during the Winter break Provide a Curriculum Vitae (CV) Write paragraph or two describing specifically why they want to go to Melbourne and what they hope to do there Value: $1000 (up to two prizes may be awarded each year). David Durack Travel Bursary This Bursary was established through the Foundation by Georgian David Durack. It will enable a continuing resident to gain international experience relevant to their medical/health related field of study, as an integral component of personal development and education. Application/ Meets all requirements to proceed to the next academic year at UWA Will continue as a resident of the College in the following semester Demonstrates a desire to work, study or participate in a useful educational activity in the fields of: medicine, public health, healthcare, biotechnology or bioengineering in a location outside of Australia (or the applicant s home country) Applicants must address the purpose of the proposed travel, its educational value to the applicant, the locations to be visited and the people or institutions who will act as mentors, hosts, or sponsors Provide supporting materials where necessary Value: $3000 How to Apply Complete a Scholarships and Bursaries Application Form or a Travel Prize Application Form (download from the College website), making sure you are eligible for any awards you apply for.
