Residential Style, Assisted Living Resident Biographies Page 7 Dorothy Horning was born in Cleveland, Ohio and graduated University with a degree in mathematics. She married Norman in 1944 and earned a MS from the Case Institute of Technology. She was the only woman in a class of veterans on the GI bill and also the youngest. She then taught math at in Cleveland. Although calculus was tough, she challenged the students who said, If she can learn it, so can we! She and Norman built the first house they lived in, starting with a book and learning as they went, doing all the carpentry, electrical work, plumbing and roofing. Dorothy worked on the first large-scale computer in the Midwest. Her team invented many of the techniques that are now in textbooks. She worked as a software architect and manager for 30 years in Palo Alto. She and Norman bought three acres in Woodside where they lived for 36 years. Dorothy retired in 1991 and then had time for music (she had played piano and cello). So she took banjo lessons and joined the Peninsula Banjo Band, which led to a whole new career as music director for her own band, Happy Time Banjos. She is still going strong, leading the band every Wednesday evening at a pizza parlor in Redwood City. Dorothy s husband, Norman, died in 2007. Jacques & Berthe Torczyner. Jacques was born in in Antwerp, Belgium on July 8, Berthe was born in London, England on October 18. They grew up in Antwerp and were married there in 1938. When Hitler invaded Belgium in 1940, they left with their family and went from Belgium through France and Spain, and sailed to Cuba from where they arrived in the United States on December 17, 1940. They lived in Manhattan until moving to Walnut Creek, California in 1999. Jacques and Berthe plan to spend much time enjoying their family who live in Saratoga. Jacques was very active in the Jewish Community. For 25 years he was a member of the American Section of the World Zionists. He became involved in American politics. He was a member of the US Observer Team at UNESCO in Paris and was an advisor at the Chase Manhattan Bank for 35 years. Jacques is an avid reader and amassed an impressive book collection during his lifetime. Berthe supported Jacques in all his activities and they travelled extensively all over the world. She was active in the Women s Division of the ZOA and is a great admirer of art having worked in a gallery in New York. She especially likes nature and appreciate the beauty of her natural surroundings. She is an avid reader, loves history and biographies, though they take a little longer to finish now.
