Anderson CLOSED Report on current Department of Nursing Programs Outcomes A. NCLEX-RN & NCLEX-PN pass rate: NCLEX-RN pass rate for 2015 was 90% (72/80). NCLEX-PN pass rate for 2015 was 92.86% (39/42). B. Retention Efforts: See attached report. C. Enrollment: currently in Spring 2016 in all 4 ADN levels we have 126 students; 40 in the VN program. The Summer 4 th semester compressed group has 15 students who will be eligible to graduate in August 2016 if successful. Fall 2016 anticipated enrollment: ADN Semester 1 Goal is 50 students but may be less as a result of the curriculum change and Fort Hood downsizing. VN Level Goal - 1 -
is 40 including 9 KISD Articulating Students. Fall 2015 and spring 2016 3 KISD informational groups/tour 52 students attended. D. Faculty: There are 2 ADN vacancies and 2 VN vacancies. E. VN Curriculum Committee Report: o Admission requirements have remained the same o Program credit hours decreased from 53 to 50 as of fall 2015. (Specific changes were reported in the April 2015 meeting.) o Pending TBON visit later part of summer 2016. F. Simulation Curriculum Committee Report: Simulation Usage report: for all the ADN & VN students the course objectives were medication administration, nursing skills practice, and check-off assessments. Equipment used: Vital Sign Machine; patient assistive devices, medication dispenser, oxygenation & suction devices, call light system, and the intravenous pump. New equipment purchased 2015-2016: Basic Geri Manikins, Medication Cart with Scanner, IV Pumps, and Laerdal Portable Video System. H. Online spring 2017 RNSG 2221 Leadership & Management totally online for fall 2016 2 sections VNSG 1122 Vocational Concepts: 1 st VN online course Goes live online spring 2017 Plan is to phase in Nutrition and Gerontology online in the future As we start the Marble Falls cohort, every course with the exception of the first semester Health Assessment and Foundations of Nursing will be available online: all Med-Surg, Mental Health, RNSG 1412 Nursing Care of Childbearing & Childrearing and Leadership courses. All faculty were required to complete Basic Certification for Blackboard Learning Management System. Planning to have more courses utilize online testing. Presently 4 th semester exams are completely online. Pharmacology continues to be very popular with several sections needing to be opened and offered each semester. EMT Basic program has started this spring 2016 in Fredericksburg TX. I. Semester Reports-Coordinators: RNSG 1229 Integrated Nursing Skills/Articulation Option Generating interest from LVN/Paramedic Students (we accept a total of 10 articulation students in the ADN Program). Last cohort 12 students completed in March 2016 in preparation for fall 2016 semester. ADN Semester I: We currently have 32 students who will progress to 2 nd semester. Some of the activities we have the students do in the classroom setting to promote critical thinking, clinical reasoning, and clinical judgment include: o Interactive Learning Strategies using games such as: Foundations Family Feud Jeopardy with a Twist I Spy Hot Bed Pan (This is a spin off the game Hot Potato) o Mock Trial on Negligence & Malpractice in Nursing o Clinical Group Presentations on Medication Safety, Cultural Competency, and The Nursing Process. o Flipping the classroom: Instead of traditional lectures, this concept engages the students in the learning process by requiring students to come to class prepared. The faculty then engages students in interactive classroom discussions on the content. o Classroom group case studies o This semester we combined the QSEN concept, culture, and community. The students were assigned to develop a PowerPoint presentation on a health-related issue that impacts a particular group, culture, or community and tie that in with one of the QSEN competencies. A few examples include: Patient-Centered Care for New Mothers Teamwork & Collaboration: Energy Drink Use in High School Students The Use of Smartphones and the Impact on Health Tattoo Safety and Evidence-Based Practice Health Challenges Facing the Amish Community & Patient-Centered Care The Effects of Pain Management in the Asian Culture ADN Semester II: There are twenty-one students currently in second semester. Our clinical experiences are at Baylor Scott & White (BSW) on 5 South for Adult Health and STC 1 for Mental Health. We - 3 - V. King P. Vasbinder
are also at the VA: 2K for Adult Health and utilize the GI Lab and OR for additional learning experiences. The students have gotten great experiences at the VA; including a lot of IV skills, med passes, foleys, and wound care. At BSW on 5 South the students have been included in the unit safety huddles. There are always initiatives on 5 South to improve patient care, including fall prevention and medication education. The Manager and staff always make sure that we are included and allow us to gather statistics. We have started attending the Bone and Joint Camp classes which reinforce our efforts to help educate the post-op patients. On STC 1, the unit has been very welcoming to the students and including them in group activities. We have a new faculty member, Pamela Pankey, and she wishes to extend her thanks for all of your help. On behalf of myself, Kim Brock, Tina Campbell, and Pam Pankey thank you for all you do to make our students have a wonderful learning experience. ADN Semester III: RNSG 2362: Clinical Seton Medical Center: Ms. Colon-Hospital needs more equipment (VS machine, pulse ox); BSW STC 2: Ms. Bowers; Waco VA: Ms. Espaillat & Ms. Bosko; McLane Children s Hospital, Ms. Trummel & Ms. Gronski: Quite a few new staff who are not as comfortable with students RNSG 1347: Med/Surg Ms. E. Colon & Ms. K. Bowers: using presentation, NCLEX chapter quizzes discussion board and lecture. RNSG 2201: Care of Children and Families Ms. V. King & Ms. C. Gronski: using presentation, case studies, flipping classroom, lecture, pre-class quiz, games. ADN Semester IV: We have 31 students in clinical, Med/Surg -19 students are face to face lecture and 12 are online. We anticipate all 31 graduating in May. Semester 4 is the capstone courses. In the didactic portion we teach advanced concepts such as critical care, cardiology, neurology, oncology, hematological disorders, etc. We have been using online testing via ParTest for a year now, and the rest of the semesters will begin online testing next semester as well. This will hopefully simulate NCLEX testing. We also integrate simulation lab to tie in with our didactic portion. We added scenarios this semester that nurses will likely see and how to respond. We included situations where a patient had an MI and went into V-FIB, a post-anesthesia patient that went into respiratory distress that had too much morphine, when to call a rapid response, when to start CPR, when to call a stroke code. All 31 students have also completed their NIHSS during this semester which went with our nervous system lecture. We supplement lecture and clinical with NCSBN lessons and pre and post exams, and use a discussion board where students read, summarize and discuss Evidence Based Post articles. Our clinical sites include Temple BS&W: 6N Med/Surg, ICU, and the Continuing Care Hospital (CCH), and students are provided observation in the ER, Cath Lab, and EP Lab. We also have students that work 1:1 with preceptors at various sites. In clinical we pair each student with a nurse so they can grasp what a typical day for an RN will look like, and the staff we have had the opportunity to work with have been outstanding and receptive to students. Update: Extension sites Marble Falls and Fredericksburg Department of Nursing Clinical Coordinator At the end of the semester we administer the two Exit HESI Exams that directly correlate to NCLEX pass rates and lets them know what they need to improve on." J. SNA Report: Fall 2015: SNA Officers attended the annual Texas Student Nurses Association Conference in Austin. They coordinated 2 blood drives with Carter Blood Bank. Spring 2016: SNA Officers attended the February Texas Student Nurse Association House of Delegates in Arlington and presented a resolution advocating for the development of education plans to be implemented no later than 32 weeks gestation during prenatal care that teach early symptoms of postpartum depression, understanding risk factors, and coping strategies. The resolution passed and is now in the working stages to move forward to the next level. They coordinated 2 blood drives with Carter Blood Bank, participated at Carl R. Darnall Medical Center s A Day in the Life of a Patient ; in the CTC Job/Education Career Fair; the Department of Nursing Fashion Show on 8 April; the Feast of Hope Wellness Fair in Temple, and the Relay for Life. K. NFLPN Report: There are 30 members. Very busy with events: Relay for Life, Blood Drive, and the Fashion Show (24 volunteered); Offered 2 Scholarships of $200. Met with about 25 prospective students. Planning for a Fall 16 cohort group of 10 students. Fredericksburg on hold for now Preceptors Currently we have 18 RNs active in the Preceptorship Program. However, several RNs in the program are not available due to other assignments. To this date, we have eight (8) RNs who applied but have not completed the required Preceptorship Course. These RNs are employed through Metroplex Hospital System, including Rollins Brook, Coryell Memorial Hospital System, and Seton Medical Center Harker Heights (SMCHH). We were pleased to announce that this summer, in addition to the preceptorships in the Emergency Department; we will offer an Intensive Care Unit preceptorship at Seton Medical Center Harker Heights. This spring, we obtained a preceptorship agreement with the Greater Killeen Free Clinic and have identified a RN who will be available for a fall preceptorship. We continue to seek additional RNs for the Preceptorship Program as our ultimate goal is to offer the preceptorship experience to all Semester 4 students as part of their Clinical IV rotation. Student s evaluations of their preceptor, precepting experiences, and the facilities have been positive. We are very appreciative to all the RNs who have shared their time and knowledge with our students. This summer Semester 4 students will be participating in the compressed curriculum. Plans are to provide a preceptorship rotation for this group of 15 students. This past year, in addition to the preceptorship agreements with Seton MCHH and the Greater Killeen Free Clinic, affiliated clinical facility agreements were also established with Seton Highland Lakes in Burnet for our Marble Falls student s clinical rotations and Cornerstone Gardens & Rehabilitation Center in Temple. The ADN Semester I students utilized Cornerstone Gardens this spring. Future plans include making arrangements for the Marble Falls student s clinical experiences in their geographic area. This will include locating facilities for clinical experiences in specialty areas, such as mental health. Overall, student & faculty evaluations have been very positive for all sites. The ADN hospital and nursing home sites scores for 2014-15 yielded 4.39/5. The fall 2015 scores increased to 4.67/5. The VN clinical sites yielded 4.76/5. The Fall 2015 scores for the acute care facilities yielded 4.88/5. Unfortunately, scores for the nursing homes were unavailable. Access to computers and supplies, and the receptiveness of the staff to the students were mentioned as negatives. S. R-Singh A. Horn D. Williams - 5 -

Clinical policies continue to be strengthened to reflect current practice and address civility. In spite of faculty vacancies, no shared faculty members have been utilized this year. Our Graduate is currently employed at Metroplex Hospital. One concern is students are not utilizing their chart more but are receiving a lot of experience. Metroplex Health Care System, Rollins Brook Hospital: going paperless. Are in HEMI Stage VII. Are utilizing scanning with collections. OSU (5 th floor) now has telemetry in all rooms. ED is now Team Health. Are hiring CTC graduates and increasing the number of RNs for student s preceptorship. Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center: No Report. Coryell Memorial Healthcare System: Are growing and needing more space. The clinic has moved to the old Scott & White Clinic building. Adding specialist. Expanding the surgical suite. Adding a second story which will be administrative offices. Using Omnicell and a medical device integration that integrates with the medical records. Baylor Scott & White Health: Residencies at Children s, Memorial, and CCH last summer and will have the third cohort this summer (CTC grads were included). Retention rates have increased with the COACH (preceptor) Program. Are hiring LVNs for the clinics but not the hospital. Do provide tuition reimbursement. McLane Children s Hospital: Will hire CTC graduates but after May 1 st, all AD graduates must obtain their BSN within 30 months of hire as the facility moves towards obtaining Magnet status. Seton Medical Center, Harker Heights: In June we will celebrate our 4 th birthday. We have seen tremendous growth. Accredited for Chest Pain in December and are working on Stroke Certification. Began the Bariatric Program April 1 st. Have had two cohorts for the nurse residency program. New hires must obtain their BSN within 24 months. Central Texas Veterans Healthcare System: No Report. Long Term Care Facilities: No Report Copperas Cove Nursing Rehab Cornerstone Gardens Granite Mesa Health Center Hill Country Rehab Indian Oaks Living Center The Meadows Very well received. Professional behaviors exhibited with open communication. CTC is one of McLane s favorites. Quality graduates with improved critical thinking skills are self-motivated and not task oriented, and demonstrate confidence. Our Accrediting Agency requires us to do a follow-up 6 months to a year after our students graduate and are employed to determine whether they are satisfied with their preparation for practice. The ACEN also wants to have input from the employer of our graduates. We would greatly appreciate your participation in obtaining this information. Thank you for sending students. One CTC graduate did receive an award. Administrative changes are occurring for the Dept. of Nursing placement within the college system. This is our second group and we will be graduating 10 students. The Pinning Ceremony will be upstairs in the Expo Center prior to graduation. Will admit 10 new students this summer total students is 58 with two full-time faculty and 4 adjuncts. No report.
