DISTRICT 7360 NEWSLETTER June 2016 Dear Fellow Rotarians, Rotary s theme for June is Rotary Fellowships and the Rotary International Convention. What a timely theme! Nancy and I just returned from this year s convention held in Seoul, South Korea. The many vivid memories we have are still fresh, so here are the highlights: over 45,000 Rotarians attended the convention, a new record. Seoul is extremely clean and very modern. For a city ranked in the top five in the world for population, the transportation system is second to none. Historic sites are well- maintained and provide a nice contrast to the bustling street scenes, sky scrapers, and other buildings. Koreans are very friendly people and most of them (particularly the millennials) know some English. While many aspects of the Korean culture were infused into the convention proceedings, there was pretty much something for everyone. The plenary sessions provided key Rotary information. The House of Friendship featured products and food from all over the world, and the booth On to Atlanta in June 2017 was very noticeable. I promise you will be blown away by the new knowledge you will gain, and the great people you will get to know by attending the Atlanta Rotary Convention next June. Of course, the memories will last forever with the new friends you meet and old friends you reconnect with. You can even join a Rotary Fellowship club to find Rotarians with similar interests as yours all around the world -- by going online. There are 64 diverse Rotary Fellowships listing everything from Amateur Radio to Bird Watching, Cooking to Fishing, and Golfing to Motorcycling to Railroading to Yachting and much more. There is something for every Rotarian to become involved with, and the convention provides the opportunity to meet other Rotarians who share the same interests. JOSEPH A. PAGANO, 35-YEAR MEMBER OF GALETON CLUB, PASSED AWAY ON MAY 8 Joseph A. Pagano, 67, of Galeton, PA, passed away on Sunday, May 8, 2016, at home surrounded by his daughters. Born August 10, 1948 in Wellsboro, PA, he was a son of the late Albert and Anne (Stamilio) Pagano. Joe was a 1966 graduate of Galeton High School and then earned his Associate' s Degree from Williamsport Area Community College. In West Orange, NJ, on March 9, 1969, he married the former Vince Ann Agnellino, who preceded him in death on April 29, 2013. In 1971, Joe joined his father and brother in Pagano Construction until starting his career with the Potter County Redevelopment Authority in 1986. He later became the Director for the Potter County Redevelopment Authority, was a member of St. Bibiana Catholic Church in Galeton, a member of the Galeton Rotary, and was instrumental in the yearly Woodsman's Show. He greatly enjoyed mountain biking, cross country skiing, hiking, and spending time with his daughters and granddaughters. Surviving are two daughters, Kara (Krissy Oudinot) Pagano, Lititz, PA and Kasey (James Eslinger) Pagano, Galeton; two granddaughters, Marley and Cassidy Burrous, Galeton; his mother-in-law, Theresa Agnellino, Galeton; a brother, Charles Pagano, Dominican Republic; a sister, Teresa (Rufus) Goodin, Douglasville, PA; a nephew, Joe Kearse; and a niece, Christa Kearse. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice. JOHN MERTZ, 18-YEAR MEMBER OF THE LEWISTOWN CLUB, PASSED AWAY ON MAY 11 TH John P. Mertz, 80, of Burnham, passed away on Wednesday, May 11, at his home. Born on June 15, 1935, in Lewistown, John was the son of the late Harry S. and Izetta (Johnson) Mertz. In addition to his wife, Robyn K. (O'Hara) Mertz, whom he married on Nov. 2, 1963, he is survived by his daughter, Heidi M. Welham, and her husband, Robert M. "Scott" Welham Jr., of Lewistown; grandchildren Sawyer E. Welham, of Arlington, Va., Coleman M. Welham, of Williamsport, and Mitchell R. Welham, of Shippensburg. John graduated from Lewistown High School in 1953 and from the Rochester Institute of Technology in 1957 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photographic Illustration. While a student at RIT, John spent a weekend photographing Louis Armstrong and the All-Stars for a class project. He also photographed Duke Ellington and Count Basie. For a semester during his senior year, John had the opportunity to study black and white photography under Ansel Adams. While in school, John worked for two summers as a counselor and teacher of photography at Camp Wigwam, a private boys' camp. Frank Lessor, producer of the musical "Guys and Dolls," came to the camp to direct the camp play and John was his chauffeur. John spent the following summer in Hollywood, Calif., at a photographic studio, where he had the unique opportunity to meet Walt Disney and Lawrence Welk. He photographed John Wayne, Liberace, Roy Rogers and Gene Autry for General Electric and the Walt Disney Studios. Drummer Johnny Kline, of the Lawrence Welk Band, taught John how to play the drums. In 1957, John enlisted in the Army and completed sniper training at Fort Benning. He spent two years in Aschaffenburg, Germany, with the First Battalion Group Seventh Infantry. He was the Third Infantry Division photographer and a personal photographer for General Westmoreland. John won the "All Army" photo contest and received the third place in the Inter-service contest.

In 1960, after the military, John started his career at the Pennsylvania State University, as a photographer in Still Photo Services. In 1969, he took over the photography department, which combined with the graphics department in 1983. While at Penn State, John had the opportunity to photograph three presidents: Kennedy, Johnson and Eisenhower. In 1991, he received the Mary Beth Reese Distinguished Service Award. In 1995, after 35 years of service, John retired as Director of Photography and Graphic Arts. John strongly advocated giving back to the community. For many years, John was very active with the American Heart Association. He served as president, five-county fund-raising chairman, and the Pennsylvania state secretary. He also volunteered at the Boy Scout Klondike Derby for 35 years, the Newtown Fire Company and Ambulance Service, was a presenter at Mifflin County School Career Day, a committee member to review fine art grants, served on the board of directors for the American Cancer Association, and helped raise funds for the Juniata Valley YMCA, and the United Way in State College. John has been a member of the Burnham Lions Club for 49 years where he served as president and secretary. He also served Lions District 14L as zone chairman, regional chairman, deputy district governor and various district cabinet positions. In 1978, John designed the Pennsylvania Lions state pin. He was the recipient of the Melvin Jones award and a member of the fellowship. He was also a dedicated member of the Rotary Club of Lewistown where he served as president from 2002 to 2003. At present, he served as the club photographer and song leader. He received and was a member of the Paul Harris Fellow. John was a charter member and past president of the Pennsylvania Keysteiners. He served 25 years on the Stein Collections International Board of Directors, and served as their official photographer. In 1992, John received the Jack Heimann Award from the organization. At present, John was a member of the University Photographers Association of America, Penn State Retired Faculty Club, Lewistown Elks Lodge No.663, Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees, Chairman of Burnham Borough Planning, treasurer of the Mifflin Juniata County Stamp Club, served on the board of directors for the Mifflin County Concert Association, treasurer of the Lewistown High School Class of 1953, and member and past commodore for the Jacks Creek Yacht Club. John was also past president of the Mifflin County Historical Society and was on the board of directors at the time of his death. John and Robyn have traveled extensively throughout Europe, Russia, South America, the Caribbean, Canada and 48 states. John's passion was taking pictures and going on adventures. He enjoyed meeting and talking to new people; always telling a great story along the way. He loved to laugh, smile and enjoy all the wonderful things life had to offer; especially his family and friends. John will be missed by many. A funeral service was held on May 16 at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 120 N. Main St., Lewistown, with Rev. Gary Roth officiating. A viewing was held on May 15 at Heller-Hoenstine Funeral Homes Inc., Woodlawn, 200 N. Main St., Lewistown. Interment took place in Mt. Rock Cemetery, Lewistown, with military honors provided by the VFW Post 7011, of Lewistown. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in John's memory to Rochester Institute of Technology, Office of Development, 116 Lomb Memorial Drive, Rochester, NY, 14623. Designate to School of Photography. LONG-TIME GRANTSVILLE CLUB ROTARIAN, BOB BENDER, PASSED AWAY ON MAY 26 Byron Robert "Bob" Bender, 90, of Grantsville, MD, died May 26, 2016, at his home. Born September 26, 1925, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Byron & Mary (Stanton) Bender. Bob was a member of Cherry Grove Church of the Brethren. A U.S. Army/Air Corps veteran of WW2, he was a member of Grantsville Post 214, American Legion. He was a member of the Grantsville Rotary Club, Mountain Lodge #99, Ancient Free & Accepted Masons, Frostburg; Cumberland Consistory Scottish Rite Masons and Ali Ghan Shrine, Cumberland. Surviving are his wife, Mary Lou (Shirk) Bender; one son, Randy L. Bender, Grantsville and one sister, Joan Hutchinson, Stone Harbor, NJ. A graveside service was held on May 28 at the Grantsville Cemetery with the Rev. Owen Guengerich officiating. Interment followed the service. Graveside military rites were accorded by Grantsville Post 214, American Legion. Newman Funeral Homes, P.A., 179 Miller St., Grantsville was in charge of arrangements. OFF THE CUFF DGE Dick Drukker Here are some thoughts for the month of June: First - The District Conference will be May 11-14, 2017 at Split Rock Lodge in Lake Harmony, PA. Second - We have found a date for those who still want to take a cruise. It will be a 7-day cruise from Baltimore to the Bahamas starting on March 12, 2017. If anyone is interested, please let me know ASAP so that we can start making plans. Third - I recently learned of a project that is very similar to the Dictionary Project. This one provides copied of the U.S. Constitution to 5 th graders. The cost is minimal. If interested, I will get more details. Fourth - I have three International Projects for interested clubs. The first is a Global Grant for Fiji, called the Taveuni Eye Project to provide eye surgery for Cataracts and Pterygiums (a growth that starts on the clear tissue of the eye

and can spread to the cornea). The cost of the project is $30,000 USD. The second project is with Australia for a New Generations Service Exchange to provide rural infrastructure to drought-affected communities. The cost is $4500 USD for each exchange not including airfare. The third project is for water and sanitation in Zimbabwe to provide clean water to the Eastern Highlands. This could be a Global Grant. If anyone is interested in any of these projects, please let me know. Fifth - The problem with a printed District Directory is that as soon as it is printed, there are changes. We have a new President for Mercersburg. We have also had two scheduling changes for official visits, one for State College Downtown which will now be July 14, and the other for Coudersport, which will now be August 15 at noon. Please let Tammy Wolgemuth and me know of any changes as soon as possible. Sixth - Please start sending your upcoming events to PDG Sharon Benner so that these may be published in the Newsletter. Noting Rotary s unique ability to bring together committed professionals to achieve remarkable goals, Germ believes that now is the time to capitalize on our success: as we complete the eradication of polio, and catapult Rotary forward to be an even greater force for good in the world. ROTARY ANNOUNCES US$35 MILLION IN ADDITIONAL FUNDS TO END POLIO WORLDWIDE Rotary today committed an additional $35 million in grants to support the global effort to end polio donating a total of $70 million in 2016 alone. The announcement comes on the heels of significant strides made against the paralyzing disease, leaving just two polioendemic countries Afghanistan and Pakistan. If current progress continues, 2016 may mark the last case of wild poliovirus. "While we are experiencing unprecedented success against polio, it is imperative to maintain high immunity and quality surveillance in all countries of the world until polio is fully eradicated," said Michael K. McGovern, chair of Rotary's International PolioPlus Committee. "We must protect the progress in polio-free parts of the world, as well as stopping transmission in Pakistan and Afghanistan." Speaking today at Rotary's annual international convention, Dr. Rebecca Martin, Director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Center for Global Health, emphasized the importance of remaining vigilant. "All countries remain at risk for importation of poliovirus as long as it is circulating in Pakistan and Afghanistan", said Martin. "Now is the time the world must act rapidly and together in stopping any outbreaks of polio. Countries need to detect virus and respond with vaccination through quality immunization campaigns." To sustain this progress, and protect all children from polio, experts say $1.5 billion is urgently needed. Without full funding and political commitment, this paralyzing disease could return to previously polio-free countries, putting children everywhere at risk. Rotary has contributed more than $1.5 billion and countless volunteer hours to fight polio, with Korean Rotary clubs donating more than $14.6 million to the effort. In addition to contributing funds, Korean Rotary members have traveled at their own expense to immunize children against polio in India. Through 2018, every dollar Rotary commits to polio eradication will be matched two-toone by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation up to $35 million a year. Rotary launched its polio immunization program PolioPlus in 1985 and in 1988 became a spearheading partner in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative with the World Health Organization, UNICEF, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and was later joined by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Since the initiative launched, the incidence of polio has plummeted by more than 99.9 percent, from about 350,000 cases a year to 16 confirmed to date in 2016.
