5 Reasons Why A Cadetship Could Be Your Career Path At Sea #1. It Pays Not only are your fees paid, you earn whilst your study. Cadets tell us today how grateful they are to have graduated with little or no debt as they embark on their career. Each Cadetship is sponsored, meaning your studies and living expenses are paid through a bursary AND whilst you are at sea on placements you are still receiving income. #2. Your Experience Our graduates are amongst the most sought after graduate officers. In a world which is changing at ever faster pace, having a wide range of experience to maximise both your choice and appeal to recruiting companies upon graduation can be invaluable. #3. Your Success Did you know an industry beating 85% of our Cadet s graduate? That s because we ensure each Cadet is placed on the right course for them and we do everything possible to ensure their at sea placement time is as fulfilling, enjoyable and insightful as possible. #4. Diversity Cadetships are open to anyone over 18. No matter your background or previous experience you can apply for a Chiltern cadetship with the full knowledge that you will be supported and helped along the way. #5. Variety We offer at-sea placements on a variety of vessels. Cadets uniquely see between 8-12 months at-sea time on a variety of vessels, from cruise liners, container ships, oil rigs where you can learn from experienced crews on voyages from port to port around the world. Start Your Journey Choosing The Right Role Each Cadetship is sponsored as a scholarship by a marine charity or commercial maritime company. Once qualified, each Cadetship offers the springboard to an exciting career away from the normal office based nine to five routine, with a wealth of opportunities that long term can be continued at sea or ashore. There are three main Cadetship areas; Deck Officer A Deck Officer maintains watches on the bridge at-sea and about the ship in port. They are responsible for passage planning, the safe navigation of the ship, cargo loading and discharge, ship stability, communications and the maintenance of the hull and deck equipment. Marine Engineering Officer A Marine Engineering Officer is responsible for the maintenance and operation of the ship s main propulsion machinery, deck machinery, air conditioning plants, refrigeration plants, and domestic and electrical services. Electro-Technical Officer An Electro-Technical Officer is a specialist officer working within the Engineering Department where they take particular responsibility for the maintenance of on board control engineering and electronic systems including propulsion control, radio communications and electronic navigation aids. Mentoring? Chiltern Maritime prides itself on the level of support and mentoring we offer. We strongly believe being there to support you during each phase of your Cadetship makes a difference. Peace-of-mind, emergency support, course advice or a check on your wellbeing during your at-sea placement is what we focus on as you embark on a new, exciting, and perhaps daunting at first, stage of your life. www.chilternmaritime.co.uk Page 5

Entry Requirements Depending on which route you are interested in will depend on the grades/qualifications you will needed to have gained. Academic If you are interested in completing a Deck (Navigation), Engineering or Electro Technical Cadetship and you will be 16+ at the commencement of the course then your academic qualifications will determine the routes that will be open to you. HND in Marine Operations (Deck) or Marine Engineering - This route would be suited to candidates who have or will expect to have 5 GCSE s or Scottish Standard Awards (grades A*-C or 1-3), which must include Mathematics, English and a Dual Award Science. Foundation Degree in Marine Operations, Marine Engineering or Marine Electrical/Electronic Engineering - Suitable for candidates who possess the above criteria, but who will also have or expect to attain a minimum of 120 UCAS points through A Levels or their equivalents, preferably in Mathematics or Physics. Engineering Specialised Route (Fast Track) - For those applicants whom have recently passed a BSc Marine Engineering / Electrical Engineering based degree, BEng or industry based apprenticeship, and who display a mature outlook on life, we are able to offer a fast track system. Eligibility for this type of route will also be determined by the MCA s provision of a Letter of Assessment, defining the exact make-up of their training. Medical You will need to be in possession of a valid Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) approved medical certificate, known as an ENG 1. This would normally be organised after a successful interview, but for an overview of the required medical standards visit our website. Rebecca Smith Trinity House deck cadet After completing my introduction training (security, emergency situations and a safety tour), and receiving my uniform, I found my cabin and prepared for my first watch which was to commence at 6pm. After introducing myself to my shipboard training officer, I was tasked with familiarising myself with the engine room and finding out as much information as possible about systems on board and their operation, alongside completing my safety familiarisation of the engine room. Over the coming weeks I was trained in arrival and departure procedures, and given the responsibility of starting and stopping the water generation plant on board in addition to completing the shipboard records and logs. I also took part in bunkering operations and was talked through the checklists and legislative requirements for the vessel.
