We have become an integral fixture in the Harlem/Manhattan Community, since the chapter s purchasing of the beloved 4- Story Brownstone, aka NYA Chapter s Kappa Kastle in 1951. While located in the Hamilton Heights Historic District in Greater Harlem, the New York Alumni Chapter has hosted many of our community and fellow Greek Letter organizations. We also sponsored Halloween Haunted House and Holiday Community Service Events for our youth in the area and provided a wide array of social and community service oriented programs for the Harlem/Manhattan community in which we are located. We here at the New York Alumni Chapter are very proud and honored to be able to celebrate 80 Years of History, Achievement, and Community Service. Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. New York Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. was chartered January 20, 1937, under the sponsorship of the Province Polemarch, Brother I.T. Donaldson, with the cooperation of 40 other Brothers. Many of these Brothers were the original sponsors of the Kappa Kostume Karnival which became the unique and outstanding NY Fall Ball. Now called the Annual Krimson and Kream Ball. New York Alumniʼs first Polemarch was Brother Irving Hamer. The Keeper of Records, Brother Robert Si Jones; and the Keeper of Exchequer was Brother H. Taft Thompson. In the early stages of the Chapterʼs incorporation there was no regular meeting place. Brothers met at local YMCAs, Elks House, and at Brother Dimitryʼs and Delphʼs homes. The most prominent issue on the minds of Brothers was the longing desire to have a Kappa Kastle. Brother Donaldson put up the first five dollars. This was the start of the fund to buy a house. Brother Donaldson encouraged the Chapter to allocate a portion of their dues for this fund, as well. The fund received its greatest impetus from the Annual Kappa Kruise. The Kruise began in 1950. In 1952 the Boatride netted $12,500 which was placed into the Bank along with each subsequent net profit. In 1959 the Brothersʼ hard work and dreams paid off. The loan from Carver Federal Bank of $12,500 the deal was solidified and the purchase of a four story Brownstone at 472 West 141 Street in Harlem, New York was made. The NYA Kappa Kastle Brownstone is located in the center of the Historic Hamilton Heights District of Harlem, NY; on the skirt of the famous Harlem Renaissance neighborhood of Sugar Hill. The mortgage was burned during the administration of Brother Oliver W. Parsons. Thus, the title of Polemarch Emeritus was bestowed upon him. To this date, the wood furnishings have been revarnished, bathrooms have been renovated and plans have been made to re-floor and renovate the Arthur A. Schomburg Museum Room and Educational Library Room both on the 3rd Floor. We have dedicated and named the 1st Floor Conference Room to the Oliver W. Parson Conference Room. New York Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. continues to participate in community affairs and looks forward to maintaining its position as one of the crown jewels of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc; and mostly importantly in our community we serve. Under New York State Not-for-Profit Laws, the New York Alumni Chapter founded the Reginald F. Lewis Scholarship Foundation in 1992(renamed New York Alumni Foundation-NYFA) a non-profit 501 (c) 3 corporation that serves as the philanthropic arm of the New York Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. and is well known for its stalwart dedication in providing scholarship awards to worthy recipients at our annual Reginald F. Lewis Scholarship Luncheon. We are very proud to have been a contributing factor in the higher education and mentoring of our youth. The foundation donated over $400,000 to well deserving college bound young men.
