Claxton High School Career, Technical, Agricultural Education (CTAE) Update March 2017 February and March have been busy months for Claxton High School Career, Technical, & Ag Ed students and teachers. CTE Month was celebrated in February with various activities such as job shadows, students organization meetings, career interest inventories and career lessons, to name a few. The CTAE student organizations participated in region and state competitions. Shown below are region and state winners and competitors. FCCLA Region Winners FBLA State Competitors FCCLA State Winners FBLA received an award for having the largest percentage increase in local chapter membership in the state Career Day/Career Fair CHS will host a Career Day/Career Fair on April 11. If you would be willing to represent your profession and share information with our students, please contact Courtney Tinsley, school counselor, at ctinsley@evans.k12.ga.us or Betty Whitaker, CTAE Director/Work-Based Learning Coordinator, at bwhitaker@evans.k12.ga.us.

First Generation College Bound Group Ogeechee Technical College is working with students at CHS identified as the First Generation College Bound member of their family. OTC has hosted two sessions thus far and will conduct three more sessions before the end of the school year. Sessions include career interest inventories, searching college information, applying for financial aid, etc. The sessions will give the students information they need to know to get ready for college. Pictured are representatives from Ogeechee Technical College working with some of the First Generation College Bound Group. Twenty-eight students are participating in the First Generation College Bound Group this year. Move on When Ready Move on When Ready (MOWR) is a dual-credit program in which high school students may earn high school course credits while taking college courses. Georgia s Move on When Ready program is available to any Georgia student in grades 9-12 enrolled in a public school, private school, or homestudy program operated pursuant to O.C.G.A. 20-2-690 in Georgia. More details about the new Move on When Ready dual-credit program may be found at www.gafutures.org or www.gadoe.org/curriculum-instruction-and-assessment/ctae/pages/transition-career- Partnerships.aspx. *When considering MOWR, it is important for the student and/or parent to contact the post-secondary institution the student plans to attend to make sure MOWR credits will transfer to that institution. CHS has had students in the MOWR program at Georgia Southern University, East Georgia College, and Ogeechee Technical College. Ogeechee Technical College has offered four courses here at CHS this year Psychology, Algebra, English 1101, & English 1102. Some students will have four college credits when they graduate from high school this year. CTAE Offerings next year through MOWR Claxton High School will be offering two MOWR programs next year through the MOWR program. Ogeechee Technical College will be offering the Nursing Assistant (Nurse Aide) program and the Carpentry (Construction) program on the CHS campus. Also, students have an opportunity to take MOWR classes at Ogeechee Technical College campus to count as a CTAE pathway (and college credit). These classes will be offered at OTC: Administrative Support Assistant Emergency Medical Responder Medical Office Specialist Precision Agriculture Specialist Shampoo Technician (Cosmetology) Criminal Justice Fundamentals Hospitality Operations Associate Office Accounting Specialist Prep Cook Certificate (Culinary area) Students participating will be able to earn a certificate in the program they are taking at the end of the year.

Job Shadows Continue Students in Work-Based Learning and the Georgia BEST certification program are still participating in job shadows through mid-april. Shown below are some more of the job shadow visits: By job shadowing their career choice, students have an opportunity to see first-hand if this is what they would like to do in the future. One student decided after her job shadow experience that the occupation she was thinking about would not be something she would want to do all day. We would like to see our job shadow program include all seniors next year.

Before students went to the job shadow site, they were given a handout that listed questions to ask the person they were shadowing. After completing the job shadow experience, students had to type a one-page summary about their experience and include the information they were required to find out about the career. Dining Etiquette Luncheon Students in the Move on When Ready program at Claxton High participated in a Dining Etiquette Luncheon at Ogeechee Technical College recently. Students enjoyed a delicious luncheon prepared by OTC culinary students and listened to a presentation on dining etiquette by Lydia Ramsey. Lydia Ramsey is a syndicated columnist and the author of Manners That Sell: Adding the Polish That Builds Profits. Students also received a copy of the book Lydia Ramsey s Little Book of Table Manners to take home with them. Pictured below are students participating in the Dining Etiquette Luncheon at Ogeechee Tech: Mock Interviews Mock interviews for Work-Based Learning students, Georgia BEST certification students, and seniors in CTAE classes will be held on Thursday, April 20, at Claxton High School. If you are willing to serve as an interviewer, please contact Betty Whitaker, CTAE Director/Work-Based Learning Coordinator, at bwhitaker@evans.k12.ga.us.

Ogeechee Technical College Presents MOWR Program Ogeechee Technical College faculty and staff recently presented information about Move on When Ready (MOWR) and showcased some of their program areas to all students at CHS. The program was held during Tiger Pride advisement time in the auditorium. Pictured below are pictures from the event: Business Class Creates Vision Boards Students in Mrs. Robinson s business classes recently researched careers and prepared a vision board. On the vision board, students had to show their career choice, the education required, skills needed, expected salary, their short and long term goals, and list inspirational quotes. Displayed below are some of the students with their vision boards:

Work-Based Learning There have been 53 students in the Work-Based Learning program this year at CHS. Students can leave school one or two blocks and receive class credit while working. Students are encouraged to acquire a job in their career pathway and are required to keep a portfolio. Shown below are some WBL students at their job sites: CTAE Advisory Board The next CTAE Advisory Board will be held on Tuesday, April 25, from 5:30-7:00 in the CHS Media Center. If you would like to participate on the CTAE Advisory Board, please contact Ms. Whitaker (bwhitaker@evans.k12.ga.us). We would value your input and participation.
