Note if the applicant has previously not met the guidelines for a CHSP grant this application may be rejected; e.g., failure to spend funds according to the guidelines/approved budget, failure to meet expectations of the grant, failure to submit or being late with the completion report. EXPECTATION It is expected that if the CHSP Student Research Grant is awarded that the student will participate in the 2017 OU Research and Creative Expo, Thursday, April 6, 2017 AND- the 2017 CHSP Student Research and Creative Showcase, Thursday April 13, 2017. PROPOSAL PREPARATION Please refer to the Proposal Preparation Guide for details on formatting and contents of the proposal. Use of humans and animals as test subjects and institutional biosafety Regardless of the nature of the project, if human subjects are involved, the primary investigator must have approval from the Office of Research Compliance for Institutional Review Board (IRB). For animals used in research, approval from the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) is required. In addition, where appropriate, the research mentor must have a current and approved institutional biosafety (IBC) plan. You may apply for the CSHP Student Research Grant while these approvals are pending, but you must not begin the research project until all approvals are received. RESUBMISSIONS If a student/principal investigator is denied funding, he or she will be provided limited comments from the reviewers to help address strengths and weaknesses. When resubmitting a proposal, the principal investigator must include a copy of these comments and be allowed an additional page to briefly describe the changes that have been made to strengthen the proposal. FUNDING Because funding is limited, preference will be given to undergraduate students completing capstone research projects, and to graduate students completing theses or dissertations. While students may not be awarded more than $500 per academic year, they may receive funding more than one (1) time while at Ohio University for different projects. A committee will review all proposals based on each question provided in Proposal Preparation Guide. Each question will be rated on a scale and the tally of points will be used initially to rank order the proposals. Ultimately, the review committee will determine which proposals will be funded and the amount to be granted each cycle. BUDGET A complete budget must be included to help demonstrate how the funds will be utilized and to establish how the grant might help solidify the completion of the project. If the applicant has obtained additional funding, the source and amount should be identified. If proposals have been submitted, but are in review, these should be identified as well. The grant amount requested may be adjusted based on available funds. It is the principal investigator and faculty mentor s responsibility to spend their funds directly on items identified/approved in the budget. Funds not spent by June 30, 2016 must be returned, unless an extension is requested and granted before that 2 CHSP Student Research Grant (August 21, 2016)
time. Reimbursement for qualified expenses must occur within 30 days of a purchase and include a receipt. *Please read the following paragraph carefully. Any change to the proposed budget may significantly impact the ability to address the specific aim(s) stated in the proposal. Consider your budget request carefully as you put together your initial proposal. If you feel it is necessary to revise your budget, submit your entire proposal with a side-by-side comparison of your initial request with your new proposed budget to Dr. Kushnick (Kushnick@ohio.edu) and follow-up with a short meeting to discuss the next step. Please note, a revision to your budget MAY require a re-write of the proposal and re-review in the next Grant cycle with no guarantee the rewritten proposal will be funded or that funding will be available (in the subsequent cycle). FINAL REPORT Each principal investigator is required to submit a final report on how the grant was utilized. The report should be submitted no later than June 30, 2017 or at the end of the project, whichever comes first. The final report will include the following: How the funds were spent. Status of the project and its outcomes. Plan for dissemination of results. EXTENSION An extension may be awarded if the student is actively working towards the project s completion. To request an extension a student must submit the request via e-mail no later than June 30, 2017.
