Monthly Reports Executive Director s Report (Paula) Campground (a critical revenue source for the Center) renovations underway; electrical and water upgrades; general improvement to various sites; addition of ten new tenting sites Still to open May 1 st Landscaping to get underway in May Repainting and improving office space still to come Exploring online booking software Full time upgrade supervisor employed; two labourers (via Job Creation Partnership program) also on the job Two campground attendants hired and begin this week Campground fee adjustments approved by council Rebranding help for the centre new logo-- the youth centre of Nelson Design competition/repainting project; PR campaign to rise profile of the centre (what happens inside should be seen on the outside); see attached document Committee given outline of project and asked for feedback, next steps would be check with David Dobie for feedback and the CDC. The Nelson Youth Employment Centre is a subcontractor of Kootenay Career Development Society and Work BC. Our current contract allows us to assist youth between the ages of 16-22 find and maintain employment and community attachment. Some of our services include helping clients to write resumes, cover letters, and references. As well as some grant applications and scholarships applications. We also help Youth get funding for various employment related certificates and refer youth to various community organizations like community futures to help them start their own business, or to different programs for wage subsidy. The NYEC offers services for individuals who have disabilities including customized employment, or whatever other supports they may need to be successful in employment. We have recently hired a new employment counsellor Graham McHugh who is now starting to see clients. We just finished two very successful intakes of our Skills Link the first was October 2015-Dec 2015 and the second was Jan to the end of March. Skills Link is a Service Canada funded employability program for youth with barriers between the ages of 15 and 30. The youth are paid minimum wage for 12 weeks. Week 1-5 Employability Skills Week 7-12 Employment with local businesses. ***Employers are reimbursed wages for first 5 weeks of the Youths Employment*** We are in the process of getting two more Skills Link intakes which will start sometime between June 6 th and the beginning of September. Now accepting bids for new office renovations which are going to hopefully start sometime in May for about two weeks. This will allow us to see more youth leading to contract negotiations with KCDS to extend the age limit of the clients we are able to see and allow us to offer more services including outreach to Salmo, Kaslo, and Slocan.
Introduction The Youth Center in Nelson is in need of repainting. This presents an opportunity for us to change the look of or building and create an exterior that better represents the activities and users of the center. We are holding a Call-For-Artists to submit designs for the new paint job. The winning selection will receive a reward of $500 and the opportunity to work on the installation of the design, in a paid position(s). We will seek to install the winning selection this summer (2016). Project Budget UNKOWN Project Brief The Youth Center is seeking design proposals from anyone interested in completing this repainting project. The designs should reflect the values of the Youth Center in a healthy and creative way. Designs should be unique and the subject/theme of the new paint job is entirely up to the artist, or team of artists. Designs will be limited to surface repainting; no construction or structural changes will be permitted. Changes to planter boxes, picnic benches or lighting may be suggested but will ultimately be determined by the panel and Youth Center staff. The Youth Center has been in operations for 19 years and has steadily grown in this time. Visitor numbers have nearly doubled in this last year and we have the capacity to accommodate more visitors. Recently there have been major renovations to the skate park and activity areas making the Center even more inviting and functional. The exterior walls, however, need improvements. The Youth Center is located at 608 Lake St. in Nelson BC. There are 3 exterior walls, but the primary focus of this project will be refurbishing the street side wall. Proposals may include designs for the other 2 sides. We would like to consult the community and offer everyone the chance to submit designs for the new face of the Youth Center. Eligibility Everyone is eligible to submit a design. It could be an artist or group of artists, a classroom of students, or an ongoing art installation that would change over time. Applicants do not need to be professional, but they must submit a design with sufficient details such that the design can be feasibly evaluated and actually completed. Youth Center Values and Principles to Guide the Design The primary goal of the Building Repaint Design Competition is to identify an image or aesthetic that better represents the Youth Center and helps people who view the building from the outside understand what is happening on the inside.
The mission of the Youth Center is to create a safe, accepting and empowering community where all youth can interact and access a variety of programs, services and activities that they need and enjoy. The Center is a non-judgmental space where youth from all backgrounds are welcome to learn new skills and feel confident. The Youth Center is best known for its indoor skate park, but we also have a variety of other activities including basketball, air hockey, a pool table, dance studio, music room, kitchen and art studio. We host support groups, clubs and meetings, and even a place for parents to relax. Our Employment Center provides youth with job search assistance and one-to-one employment counselling. The Youth Center also manages the operation of the City Campground as a way to raise funds for the Center and also provide Youth Employment opportunities. Other Goals of the Building Face Re-design Our building has several doors, some open to the recreational floor and drop in facility, one leads upstairs to the Youth Employment Center and one goes to the office of our programing and administrative staff. The variety of doors often lead to confusion as existing signage fails to clearly direct people and they become lost looking for the various services. Our second priority for the repaint design is to clearly and intuitively help people find the particular service that they are looking for office staff, drop in rec facility or employment center. The following must be submitted: 1. Individual or Team Name and contact information. If team, primary contact member 2. A Proposal Outline This will introduce the concept of your idea and your approach as an artist. Should include the materials and equipment that you will be using and how the work will be installed/painted. Artists may include references or previous projects 3. A Proposal synopsis A brief and concise explanation of your idea that can be used as a quick reference to you project 4. Paper copies of your design This could be a sketch, drawing or created using computer software and must be full colour. Must be detailed enough to be a clear and reasonable representation of the final installation 5. Design Guidelines Design proposals must follow the following criteria: - Contain no harmful language, imagery or advertising - Represent the values of the Youth Center in a healthy and creative way - Contain no structural changes to the building only modification of the surface of the building - Subject/theme of the mural is entirely up to the artist - Final product must be durable and easily maintained - Could be painted on a panel and installed on the wall or be directly painted Evaluation Criteria and Weighting Submissions will be judged on Artistic Design and Aesthetics (20%) - Creativeness and aesthetic appeal. This will require that your submission be of sufficient size and quality to convey your intended design clearly. The Youth Center is seeking a unique and memorable paint job that will make the building more beautiful and inviting for youth and parents. Representation of Youth Center Values (20%) - Does the design express the values, and represent the activities and users of this facility? Designs submissions should be able to speak to our facility s function, values, and represent the interests of youth. Functionality (20%) - Design should help identify the entrances to the Youth Center s various services so that visitors clearly or intuitively understand how to access the Drop in center, Program Office or Employment Center. Practicality and Affordability, Quality and Completeness of Submission (20%) - How realistic and achievable is your design? Can it be completed within budget and on time? Designs should be accompanied by a materials list, installation requirements, costs associated, and a feasible timeline. Please take the time to submit a quality and complete proposal that can be fairly evaluated. Popular Vote (20%) - Design submissions will be posted to facebook and displayed at the Youth Center. People will be encouraged to submit feedback and identify their favourites. Popular vote will not be the only deciding factor, but will contribute to the decision making process by 20% of total score.
