SILESIAN UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY SPIE STUDENT CHAPTER ANNUAL REPORT 2012 INTRODUCTION The Silesian University of Technology SPIE Student Chapter was created in August 2005 at the Silesian University of Technology in Gliwice, Institute of Physics, Department of Optoelectronics at the initiative of prof. Tadeusz Pustelny, and Ph.D Kamil Barczak. The chapter members are s from the Institute of Physics, as well as students of Electronics and Telecommunication from the Mathematics-Physics Faculty and the Electrical Engineering faculty at Silesian University of Technology. Currently Silesian University of Technology SPIE Student Chapter is localized in The Department of Optoelectronics under the Faculty of Electrical Engineering. Developing the competence of Chapter members in the field of optoelectronics and provide possibility for knowledge exchange as well as develop personal relations with members of other chapters/institutions. These goals were realized in 2012 through the following activities:
The Opto Meeting for Young Researchers & 7th International SPIE Students Chapter Meeting Gliwice 2012 In May 2012 the Silesian University of Technology SPIE Student Chapter organized the annual conference for young researchers, students and PhD students working in the field of optics and optoelectronics. This conference was a continuation of SPIE Meetings that had previously been held by SPIE chapters in Wroclaw and Torun. The main goal of the conference was to introduce participants to recent trends in the field of optics and optoelectronics, provide possibility for knowledge exchange as well as develop personal relations with members of other chapters/institutions. The program of the conference included formal part; e.g. lectures, workshops, seminars, posters as well as informal events aimed at building relations on a personal level. The event was organized in cooperation with OSA/SPIE Chapters from Torun, Wroclaw and Warsaw. Lecturers from all over the world were invited to visit our conference. Conference had more than 60 participants. Professor Brian Culshaw from University of Strathclyde was an important participant of the conference, who gave a presentation on Fiber Optic Sensors: Bringing Ideas in Optics to Engineering Reality. Professor was invited by SPIE Visiting Lecturer program. Fig.1. Marcin Procek giving a lecture on The application of TiO2 and ZnO nanoparticles to sensitive gas sensors

Members of the SPIE chapter at Silesian University of Technology were participating in The International PHD Workshop organized by Electrical Engineering Faculty, Silesian University of Technology. Workshop took place in polish mountains Wisla 2023 October 2012. Participation of chapter members in The International PHD Workshop workshop were: Dr Eng. Przemyslaw Struk M. Sc. Grzegorz Konieczny M. Sc. Marcin Procek M. Sc. Sabina Drewniak During The International PHD Workshop our representatives were participating in conversations about forming new SPIE chapter in Poland. They were introducing advantages of SPIE Chapter membership.
Faculty of Electrical Engineering Open Days 2012.05.13 The aim of the Open Days was to increase interest in science and encourage young people to study at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at the Silesian University of Technology. Members of The Silesian University of Technology SPIE student chapter organized workshops for high school students and undergraduates. During this events participants were introduced to optics and optoelectronics laboratory equipment and could test laws of physics on prepared stands. Following laboratories were presented during the workshops: Laboratory of Raman spectroscopy and Atomic Force Microscopy (M. Sc. Sabina Drewniak) Laboratory of optical fiber sensors (M. Sc. Marcin Procek) Laboratory of nanostructures technology (Dr Eng. Przemysław Struk) Optoelectronics Laboratory (Dr. Eng. Kazimierz Gut) Optics + Photonics, 12th - 16th August 2012, San Diego, California, USA Participation of Chapter member Bartłomiej Toroń in Optics + Photonics conference 12-16 August 2012 in San Diego California thanks to Travel Grant award. This meeting was beneficial because of exploring new cooperation possibilities with other chapters. Fig.3. Bartłomiej Toroń during the presentation of his scientific achievements
