Source: www.osha.gov One of the most hazardous places to work U.S. hospitals have recorded 6.8 work-related injuries and illness for every 100 full-time employee in 2011 (almost twice the rate for private industry as a whole)

Source: www.osha.gov In 2011, U.S. hospitals recorded 58,860 work-related injuries and illnesses that caused employees to miss work. In terms of lost-time rates, it is more hazardous to work in a hospital than in construction or manufacturing.

Source: www.osha.gov Hospital workers lift, reposition, and transfer patients who have limited mobility. Other unique risks include neddlesticks and violence. Caregivers feel an ethical duty to do no harm to patients. Some will put their own safety and health at risk to help a patient. Employees must react to unpredictable events with split-second decisions.

Violence is becoming more common inside U.S. hospitals. 2010 Report from Joint Commission Hospitals saw significant increases in assault, rape and homicide from 2007-2010. About 3% of U.S. hospitals experienced a shooting incident between 2000-2011 = 154 Shootings # of physical and sexual assaults increased by 37% from 2010 to 2013, including 8 homicides in 2012. 91% of perpetrators were men 32% of perpetrators were in a current or estranged relationship with a victim 25% were current or former hospital employees 27% used violence in an act of revenge 21% ended in suicide 14% ended in death of an ill hospitalized relative Source: www.advisory.com
