WELCOME DR. BRET CHAMPION After a six-month nationwide search, the Klein ISD Board of Trustees voted unanimously to name Dr. Bret A. Champion as the new superintendent replacing Dr. Jim Cain, who announced his retirement in Sept. 2015. Approximately 50 candidates applied to lead the 50,600 student district in northwest Harris County. Dr. Champion s philosophy about education is that people need to always view everything they do through the lens of student learning, and that everyone must be about the business of continually improving. Mistakes, Champion believes, are excellent opportunities to learn. Champion assumed the position of the Klein ISD Superintendent on July 1. He has wasted no time in getting acclimated to the Klein ISD culture, spending many days in May and June visiting with staff and attending meetings and functions. Klein ISD is in great shape, he said. I m not interested in changing things that are going great for students. I want people to recognize that I appreciate that there are lots of good things happening. continued on page 2

Formally known as the Financial Allocation Study for Texas (FAST), TXSmartSchools uses academic, financial, and demographic data to measure school districts financial and educational health. We are blessed to join a district that attains educational excellence while maintaining cost-effective operations, indicated Champion. He has big plans for his first 100 days working closely with the Board of Trustees and meeting employees, parents, students, and the community as a whole. Klein s culture and heritage are unparalleled, and our students successes both in the classroom and in extracurricular activities are renowned throughout the state. I look forward to working with the Board, staff, students, parents, and community of Klein ISD as we strive for continued academic excellence and personal growth for all Klein ISD students. I developed an entry plan that will guide my first 100 days and enable me to hit the ground learning. I will use this time to listen and learn about the district to help me acclimate to Klein ISD s rich culture of student success. ENTRY PLAN GOALS 1. Establishing a collaborative, positive, and productive working relationship with the Board of Trustees. 2. Creating opportunities to build strong, collaborative, and productive relationships with a multitude of stakeholders in the district through open and honest communication, including listening to and learning from feedback. 3. Evaluating organizational effectiveness and efficiency to ensure strong support of campus teaching and learning and a robust system of continuous improvement, built upon the Klein ISD culture of trust, diversity, and heritage. 4. Working with staff to ensure a start to school that is energizing, focused on student learning, and builds momentum toward ensuring all students have all pathways available to them. I am excited to get to know the people who make up this fine community. There will be many opportunities for interested parents, students, community members, and business partners to meet me over the first 100 days and provide input on what the district is doing well and on areas of improvement. I hope to build a network of contacts during this time that will work with me as we move the district forward. During this entry period, please know that Klein ISD is in great hands because we are fortunate to have remarkably talented people in the district. These folks will continue to do the impressive work that keeps the district and our schools learning and growing. I m a strong believer that Strong Processes + Great People = Student Success. The feedback received during my first 100 days will help guide our future efforts in the work to make Klein ISD the premier destination district in the state. KLEIN ISD EDUCATION FOUNDATION ELECTS NEW PRESIDENT William Bill P. Lakin, Jr., has been elected as the incoming president of the Klein ISD Education Foundation. Bill follows Ray Stanley, the outgoing president, in this position. Ray served as Board president from July 2015 to June 2016. Bill has a long history in education and with the Klein ISD. Positions held in the Klein ISD: PE teacher at Strack Intermediate Morning bus driver for kindergarten students Head coach at Kleb Intermediate Head coach at Doerre Intermediate Assistant principal at Strack Intermediate Klein Forest High School Principal In Aug. 2014, Bill retired after 35 years in education. He has been married to Jo Ann Lakin for 32 years. She is also a career educator with 35 years of experience. They have three children together, Taylor (31), Blaire (29), and Ford (26). Bill s immediate family has nearly 80 years of experience as educators between him, and his wife, and two of their children. To learn more about the Klein ISD Education Foundation and how donated funds assist the district, visit: www.thekef.org FUTURE READY 21 ROLL OUT The 2016-2017 school year marks the start of the Klein ISD Future Ready 21 program in which more than 6,500 student and teacher devices are set for distribution at four intermediate and two elementary schools. Over the next five years, Future Ready 21 is set to place a device in the hands of every Klein ISD student in grades 3-8 and every two students in kindergarten through second grade. Tentatively, on Aug. 29 & 30 the device roll out process will take place at each respective campus listed in the graphic. Parents will receive information about the devices in early Aug. MAHAFFEY ELEMENTARY SET TO OPEN AUG. 2016 Mahaffey Elementary is the 31st elementary school in the Klein ISD. The school is located at 10255 Mahaffey Road, Klein, TX 77375 and is named after the Mahaffey family who farmed and owned the land the school occupies today. first postmaster in Tomball, Robert Oran Mahaffey, who owned one of the first general stores in Tomball and whose daughter was the first baby born in Tomball, and Charles Bryan Mahaffey, noted family and local historian. The Mahaffey family originally immigrated to the colony of South Carolina from Ireland in 1765. Amos Mahaffey, Sr., came to East Texas from Mississippi with his family in the 1850s. After marrying and starting a family, he moved to the the small community of Willow in 1865 shortly after the Civil War ended. Shortly after arriving in the Willow (Klein) area, Amos Mahaffey, Sr., died, leaving the land and farm to his wife and children. Amos Mahaffey, Jr., went on to farm and acquire more land in the area after his father s death. At one point in the early 1900s, the family owned 1,000+ acres of land, much of which was purchased by Amos Mahaffey, Sr., for $1 an acre. Descendants of the Mahaffey family have lived in the Klein area for the past 150 years and continue to do so to this day. UPDATES FOR THE 2015 BOND Bond 2015 funds are at work across the Klein ISD as new campuses, renovations, and equipment purchases are underway. Below is the most current information regarding Bond 2015 items. HIGH SCHOOL #5 2017 High School #5 is on track for completion and will open in Aug. 2017. Funding for this campus is derived from a combination of the 2008 and 2015 bond funds. The floor plan includes L-shaped classrooms to foster small group instruction, the addition of student collaborative spaces, along with future ready career and technical education spaces. The high school sits on an 80.3-acre site, measures at 679,289 square feet, and has a capacity for 3,500 students. INTERMEDIATE #10 2018 Project Start Date: February 2015 Architect: PBK Architects Substantial Completion Date: August 2017 Contractor: Satterfield & Pontikes, Inc. Construction Cost: $157,900,000 With the design now completed, the general contractor is preparing to advertise for construction bids. The present schedule will have the guaranteed maximum price going to the Board in Sept. for approval. The design concept for Intermediate #10 is focused on the instruction and learning needs of the 21st century learner. The design includes small group instruction, collaboration, transparency, flexibility, and mobility. The school is situated on 29 acres adjacent to Metzler Elementary, measures at 204,000 square feet, and can house 1,350 students. Project Start Date: March 2015 Architect: Huckabee & Associates, Inc. Substantial Completion Date: June 2018 Contractor: Durotech, Inc. Construction Cost Estimate: $44,500,000 CAMPUS UPDATES WUNDERLICH CLASSROOMS & GYMNASIUM 2017 The 10 classroom and physical education gymnasium project was awarded to ICI Construction, Inc. The notice to proceed was issued and mobilization activities have begun. The project is scheduled for completion in May of 2017. FACILITY CAPITAL PROJECTS Walking tracks at two elementary campuses are scheduled for repair or replacement. CAPITAL RENEWAL & RENOVATIONS Based on the Bond 2015 Facilities Master Plan Recommendations document, 19 campuses across the district are set for repair or replacement of various building systems including domestic plumbing piping, electrical switchgears, chillers, and generators. This work began in May 2016 and is set for completion before the start of school. EQUIPMENT During the 2015-2016 school year, the Klein ISD purchased 10 new buses. CENTRAL OFFICE WATER & SANITARY UTILITIES 2017 The central office is currently in the permit process for connection to MUD 24. This move from a Klein ISD owned well and waste water treatment facility allows the district to abandon the current system that is aged and requires either extensive repair or replacement. TECHNOLOGY 1:1 Student Computer Ratio Future Ready 21 is the latest technological initiative in Klein ISD. The objective of the program is to place a device in the hands of every Klein ISD student in grades 3-8 over the next five years. BACK TO SCHOOL INFORMATION STUDENT ENROLLMENT: Students new to the Klein ISD who have not pre-registered for the 2016-2017 school year must enroll at the school in their attendance zones. Please visit www.kleinisd.net/attendance or call the public information officer at 832.249.4172 for information regarding attendance zones. To enroll a student in the Klein ISD, please go to www.kleinisd.net and under Keeping You Connected, select student registration. You will be able to complete the registration of your child electronically prior to completing the final enrollment. To finalize the enrollment, please bring the following items to your child s school: 1. Proof of residency in Klein ISD (a current gas, water, or electric bill with your name and address) 2. Proof of child s identity (birth certificate preferred) 3. Complete immunization health record 4. Last report card from the previous school SPECIAL EDUCATION RECORDS The Klein ISD special education department will dispose of confidential records of students who have not received special education assessment, instruction, or related services since May 2011. These records will be destroyed in Aug. 2016, unless a written request is received. The Klein ISD believes that destruction of unused records is the best protection against improper or unauthorized disclosure. However, special education records may be of future importance to parents for purposes such as applying for social security benefits. ASBESTOS COMPLIANCE UPDATE The district conducts six-month surveillances, as well as three-year re-inspections of building materials that contain asbestos in compliance with the Environmental Protection Agency s (EPA) Code of Federal Regulations.
