ISSUE 38 NOVEMBER 2012 I spent the last two weeks attending and lecturing at conferences and meetings in North America and Europe, where I had the opportunity to meet and exchange with a number of my counterparts. We share the same concerns and all agree that radiology is at a cross-roads and will undergo major changes. We have had 40 years of sustained growth, but the economic landscape is dramatically changing,with increasing pressure on the healthcare system. Quality and outcomes are becoming a priority and will drive utilization in the years to come. If we want to survive as radiologists, we have to keep challenging ourselves, demonstrate our added value to the clinicians we are working with and be full members of the health care team. Interventional Radiology is a growing activity everywhere, and we are no exception. This has led to a rebranding of radiology in Europe, and it may be time for us to revisit the way we present ourselves. Why don t we call ourselves Department of Diagnostic and Interventional Imaging? I welcome your feedback and ideas. Please send me e-mails at koff@hhsc.ca I mentioned MRT week in the last issue of our newsletter, but we have even more to celebrate as November 8 is the International Day of Radiology: a joint initiative from the European Society of Radiology (ESR), the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) and the American College of Radiology (ACR). Along with radiological societies across the world, we will celebrate the first International Day of Radiology (IDoR 2012). This initiative was established with the aim of building greater awareness of the value that radiology contributes to safe patient care, and improving understanding of the vital role radiologists play in the healthcare continuum. November 8, 1985 is the day when Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen discovered the existence of x-rays and has been chosen as a day of action and awareness. The goal of this initiative is to alert the world to the stunning medical, scientific and even artistic possibilities of medical imaging, the essential role of the radiologist as part of the healthcare team in countless medical scenarios, and the high educational and professional standards required of all staff working in medical imaging. Oncologic imaging has been chosen as the main theme of the day. This reflects the important role that radiology plays in all stages of cancer management, from early detection and prevention, to treatment monitoring. A total of 42 European national radiological societies and 14 European subspecialty & allied sciences societies have been invited to participate. Many will arrange their own activities, such as public lectures, department open days, national media appearances and press events. In North America, 18 radiologyrelated societies will take part in the International Day of Radiology. Royal College Program Director of the Year Award for 2012 A unique honor was bestowed upon Diagnostic Radiology at McMaster University at this year s Royal College International Conference on Residency Education. At the October meeting in Ottawa, Dr. Karen Finlay was recognized with the Royal College Program Director of the Year Award for 2012. This award was established to recognize a Program Director who has demonstrated a commitment to enhancing residency education, as evidenced by innovation and impact beyond his/her program. Two recipients per year are selected from a pool of nominees from across the country, in a broad range of specialties. Dr. Finlay is only the second Program Director from McMaster University to receive this prestigious award and a first for Diagnostic Radiology. Dr. Finlay said this about the award: I was delighted to be chosen from amongst such a rich pool of capable candidates from across Canada. ST. JOSEPH S HEALTHCARE Imagine ir Interventional Radiology for Medical Students On Tuesday, October 16 th, members of the St. Joseph s Healthcare, Interventional Radiology team held its first ever information session entitled Imagine ir to the McMaster medical students. Interventional Radiologists Dr. Sriharsha Athreya and Dr. David Woods; Senior Technologist Sandra Reis and Registered Nurse Deborah Martin gave informative presentations outlining interventional radiology, their roles as team members and radiation protection. Our other interventional team members Dr. David Schiff and Dr. Maurice Voss were also on hand to answer questions from a very enthusiastic medical student audience. After the presentations, the students were invited to partake in refreshments and speak one on one with the interventional team. There were hands on demonstrations of various interventional devices. The evening was a huge success and positive feedback was received from all in attendance. RADIOLOGY - Event Tracking Assistant (E.T.A.) The Radiology Event Tracking Assistant (ETA) is now Live! What is ETA? ETA allows multiple departments to share access to common and custom calendars. CBO and Mi-Req Optimization Project The CBO and MI-Req Optimization Project is moving along with regularly scheduled meetings of the two working groups. The working groups have reviewed the processes and are currently outlining improvement opportunities. Here are a couple of quick findings for your information. The speed of the MI-Req system has been one of the most common complaints heard from users across HHS. Preliminary testing with ICT was initiated whereby the MI-Req servers and the Citrix server were simultaneously monitored as users one by one were using the system. It was found that the Citrix server saturates at four users. This means that under current configuration the Citrix servers are not able to provide the required power to run MI-Req without the users seeing performance issues. Further testing of the system with ICT, PACS and the MI-Req Vendor is in progress to determine all factors affecting system speed. Most importantly, the team is working on a quick fix to resolve the speed issue while this further testing is being done! Did you know that you do not have to reject a requisition for protocol if the procedure cannot be done at your site? Anyone protocoling requisitions has the ability to reroute the requisition to the appropriate site for protocol. This can help streamline protocoling by rerouting the requisition directly instead of sending the requisition back to the booking clerk s listing as a rejected requisition for rerouting. Are you aware of the CBO phone tree? By calling extension 41484, you will be directed to the next available booking clerk. The phone tree allows a caller to select from the following options: Nuclear Medicine & Bone Density, MRI, CT and Ultrasound & Mammography Booking. The selection a caller makes directs them to the Booking Clerks for that modality. By calling a booking clerk on their personal extension, they will be able to respond to the call, but will be disconnected from the phone tree which increases the time others will have to wait on the line to reach a booking clerk. Using the phone tree helps ensure everyone receives service! Message from David Wormald Every staff member and physician at Hamilton Health Sciences has the ability and the responsibility to provide the best care for all. To do this, it is essential that we take the time to understand how each individual feels about working here, cares about, and thinks about the quality of care we deliver to our patients every day. Between October 24 and November 14, you are invited to share your perspectives and thoughts about patient care and working at Hamilton Health Sciences. The survey asks questions related to how you feel about working here; what you care about and what you think about the quality of care we deliver to our patients every day. Your responses are completely confidential and anonymous. HHS has hired a third party vendor - Kenexa - to administer the survey and compile the results. The data will only be shared back to HHS in an aggregated form; individual respondents will not be identified. The survey will identify what drives our collective efforts to increase and maintain quality patient care and service delivery, and contribute to a positive work environment. The results will enable us to develop plans to further enhance care for our patients, and the well-being of our entire workforce and physicians. It's going to take all of us to create a stronger health care system for our patients, community, our families and each other. STAFF Announcements It is my pleasure to announce and provide an introduction for two new members joining the Diagnostic Services Management Team. Vera Dodds has accepted the position of Manager, Special Projects & Integration within Diagnostic Services Office of Strategic Management effective Monday November 5 th. In 2006, Vera commenced her career at St. Joseph s Healthcare Hamilton (SJHH) as an MBA administrative Resident which led to a permanent staff position as the Service Excellence Coordinator. In this role, Vera successfully coordinated the development and implementation of the SJHH Service Excellence Program which has enabled that organization to continue to reach their vision of making a difference in the quality of service and work life as well as the future of the community. For the past 3½ years, Vera has held the position as Manager, Strategic Initiatives and Special Projects, Office of the President. In her new role, Vera will provide the leadership and management for strategic and operational projects at both SJHH and Hamilton Health Sciences. These initiatives will involve large-scale reviews of practice, procedures and systems leading to collaborative and transformative service delivery models and processes to ensure the seamless integration of Diagnostic Services within Hamilton and our LHIN. Vera will be based at St. Peter s hospital and can be contacted at doddsv@stjosham.on.ca Shairoz Kherani has accepted the position as Manager Diagnostic Imaging at the JHCC. Shairoz comes from St. Michael s Hospital in Toronto where she held the position as the Manager Medical Imaging for the past ten years; providing leadership in managing complex clinical, technical and research projects as well as provincial initiatives in an academic health sciences centre. Shairoz recently completed a one year secondment with Cancer Care Ontario as the Program Manager for Cancer Imaging. In this role, she was responsible for managing Ontario s evidence based program in alignment with the MoHLTC mandate to form policy decisions using systemic assessment and scientific evidence for the provision of and access to PET scans for Ontario patients. Shairoz earned her diploma in Nuclear Medicine Technology from the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology; a Bachelor in Health Services Management from Ryerson University; and her Masters of Business Administration and Certified Management Accountant designation from Wilfred Laurier University. Shairoz will commence her position on Tuesday November 13, 2012. Please join me in welcoming Vera and Shairoz in wishing both every success in their new positions. Our hope and aim is to garner as many donations as we can for Prostate Canada to aid in the fight against prostate cancer. They will be posting donation forms throughout the department to make it easy for anyone wishing to make a donation to any of your mustached colleagues. ANSWER: C THE BACK PAGE REMEMBRANCE DAY ( le jour du Souvenir) Sunday, November 11 th, 2012 Remembrance Day marks the anniversary of the official end of the World War I hostilities on November 11, 1918. World War I was a massive conflict was played out over the whole globe, but particularly in Europe, where troops from Canada supported the Allied forces. World War I resulted in the loss of huge numbers of lives amongst both civilians and military personnel. Many more people were badly injured. The war left great emotional scars in the servicemen, who had experienced it, and in the communities, whose sons, brothers, fathers, uncles and even grandfathers had died. Remembrance Day commemorates those who died in armed conflicts, particularly in and since World War I. In Canada, November 11 is officially called Remembrance Day, but it is also known as Armistice Day and Poppy Day. Remembrance Day is commemorated in many countries, particularly members of the Commonwealth, including Australia and New Zealand (where it is also referred to as Armistice Day). In the United States, Veterans Day falls on the same date. In the United Kingdom, the Sunday closest to November 11 is known as Remembrance Sunday. The Honourable Lincoln Alexander We mourn the loss of a long-time advocate and supporter of Hamilton Health Sciences, the Honourable Lincoln Alexander, who passed away peacefully on Friday, October 19 th, 2012. Lincoln was a great friend to Hamilton Health Sciences and in particular, St. Peter s Hospital. He was passionate about promoting care for seniors, and research into dementia and other issues associated with aging. We will be forever grateful to Linc for all that he did as an ambassador for health care in Hamilton and our community at large. Our organization joins all people of Hamilton, Ontario, and Canada in paying tribute to a truly remarkable man.
