Public Sector Swale Borough Council Corporate Equalities Scheme Swale Borough Council is asking for people s views on how it promotes equality and diversity across the borough. A consultation has been launched on the new draft Corporate Equality Scheme, and the council wants local people to share their thoughts. The council s draft Corporate Equality Scheme 2016-20 sets out what the council will do to further promote equality and diversity among people of different ages, ethnicities, disabilities, gender, sexual orientation, faiths or beliefs. Cllr Ted Wilcox, cabinet member for performance at the council, said: As a council, we need to ensure that all communities feel safe, have equal access to our services, and that our services are designed to avoid any discrimination on people with a protected characteristic such as disability, race, religion or sexuality. Swale is becoming an increasingly diverse place, and we need to tailor our services to meet those changing needs whilst providing value for money for local residents. We also need to take a leading role in making Swale a place where everyone has equal life chances, and we want to foster good relations between people by tackling prejudice and promoting understanding. The draft scheme describes how the council will fulfil its moral, social and legal obligations to eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment and victimisation, advance equality of opportunity, and foster good relations. It sets out four objectives, which aim to make Swale a fairer place. Supporting integration and cohesion in our local communities by fostering good relations between different groups. Supporting vulnerable residents by supporting Swale s more vulnerable residents, particularly those with a disability. 3. Ensuring easy, clear and convenient access to our services by improving the council s customer care and working with communities to make services more responsive to the needs of Swale s residents. Promoting equality as a local employer by ensuring that those policies and practices that affect council staff are fair and promote equality of outcome.
