Hereford & Worcester EVERY WEEK ONE OF US DIES Thursday 20 April 2017 Herefordshire & Worcestershire Group Training Association Holmer Road, Hereford HR4 9SX
Introduction Asbestos related diseases are responsible for around 4500 deaths each year the biggest single cause of work-related deaths in Great Britain. The number of deaths attributed to asbestos continues to rise and is not likely to peak for a few years. Although the use of asbestos is prohibited in new buildings, it can still be present in buildings built or refurbished before the year 2000. The working well together Hereford & Worcester Group is offering FREE courses that will provide you with information on: The types, uses and likely occurrence of asbestos and asbestos containing materials (ACMs) in buildings and plant. The general procedures to be followed to deal with an emergency, e.g. an uncontrolled release of asbestos dust into the workplace. How to avoid the risks from asbestos, e.g. for building work, no employee should carry out work which disturbs the fabric of a building unless the employer has confirmed that ACMs are not present. The properties of asbestos and its effect on health, including the increased risk of lung cancer for asbestos workers who smoke. The aim of these courses are to raise the awareness of individuals to the potential of asbestos exposure from their work activities in the construction industry. Theses FREE courses are available to self-employed persons and persons working for small to medium sized companies (less than 50 employees) who are involved in (but not limited to ) demolition, refurbishment and maintenance, plus allied trades, where it is foreseeable that their work will disturb the fabric of a building. If you have no intention of removing asbestos, but work on buildings built or refurbished before year 2000, asbestos could be present. You will need awareness training so you know how to avoid the risks.
