Details of Chapter Activities The UTRGV SPIE Student Chapter was opened in Spring of 2014 and commenced its first major activities during the annual Hispanic Engineering, Science, Technology (HESTEC) celebration during October 2014. This week long festival is geared at Hispanic students interested in STEM fields. UTRGV SPIE Student Chapter Seminar (Fall 2013 to present): This seminar has been the staple of our student organization. Dr. Zhijun Qiao, our chapter advisor, has organized and maintained this weekly seminar since before the chapter was started. Seminar topics range from Maxwell Equations, Radar Imaging, Compressive Sensing, Polar SAR, ISAR and many others. Various student members participate in this seminar and present the findings of their research. Founded the University of Texas - Rio Grande Valley SPIE Student Chapter (May 2014): Although this is technically not an event, Jacob Banda personally took care of all the paperwork and forms that needed to be filled out for our organization to become official in the eyes of our university as well as of SPIE. Services provided include: gathering student members, forwarding applications, going through several compliance trainings and certifications, opening a bank account, and managing our electronic presence. SPIE DSS Conference (May 2014): With support from our department s GAANN funding and guidance of Dr. Zhijun Qiao, we attended the conference to present original work covering topics such as Compressive Sensing, Maxwell s Equations, Polar SAR, and ISAR. Alejandro Martinez, Jacob Banda, and Dr. Zhijun Qiao were able to present at this conference. In fact, this conference is where we were able to make personal contact with Dr. Armin Doerry, whom we invited as a Visiting Lecturer. Visiting Lecturer (October 2014): With the help of Dirk Fabian and Dr. Zhijun Qiao, the arrival of Dr. Armin W. Doerry at our campus was facilitated. This included logistics and applications. What's more, we timed his arrival to coincide with an educational conference that takes place at our campus every year, HESTEC. This allowed Dr. Doerry to have a large audience of high school students in addition to our SPIE Student Chapter audience. Furthermore, as president I participated in the talks, side by side with Dr. Doerry, offering optical demonstrations with the optics outreach kit that was supplied by SPIE. In addition, many faculty members and students came by to listen to Dr. Doerry's seminar. (Estimate of around 50 present). Chapter funds were used to provide lunch for all the guests and Dr. Doerry was treated to a dinner meal with select faculty.

HESTEC Community Day (October 2014): The culmination of the HESTEC event is the community day held on Saturday, October 11, 2014. Jacob Banda personally planned and organized the vending of over 1,500 bottled beverages, which included: transportation, manual labor, financing, an unorthodox refrigeration technique and many other resources. He was able to encourage many of our student members to participate and helped to build our inventory of assets, which include a cash box, inflatable pool for beverage chilling, and a custom made SPIE table cover. These fixed assets total to $281.32. Since expenses were more than the initial SPIE Activity Grant, personal funds were used to finance the operation.

End of year BBQ event (December 2014): We held a BBQ event on campus on December 2, 2014 in order to raise awareness for IYL 2015. I brought my DJ set (speakers, amplifiers, and music) to draw attention of students while other members BBQ burgers. This was a great time to gather members together as a mixer. Recruiting (February 2015): A recruiting effort was made in Spring of 2015. This was done along with the university s general recruiting efforts. Student Chapter Leadership Workshop, SPIE Photonics West 2015, San Francisco, CA (February 2015): The president was able to attend the leadership workshop and networked with several other officers. The ideas that were discussed greatly contributed to recruiting efforts and overall administrative duties.
