During this two day weekend event, students and teachers will make new friends, enjoy an intellectually stimulating program, and participate in fun recreational activities. All students and teachers will be housed in suites in a luxurious hotel. Thanks to a grant from the Melody Robidoux Foundation, the cost is only $50 per student to cover housing and two days of educational and recreational activities. If your school registers on line, the cost drops to $40. continued on page 2 Election 2008 A conference for high school students and teachers On Saturday, October 25, from noon until 5:00 p.m., high school students and teachers from across the state will gather on the ASU campus for a day of bi-partisan election year debates, discussions and guest speakers. There will be student-run campaigns on behalf of Barack Obama, John McCain, and third party candidates. You will have an opportunity to make your voice heard by working for and voting for the candidate of your choice. Controversial State Propositions will be debated, including a constitutional amendment to limit marriage to one man and one woman. The Conference is free of charge for all students and teachers. It will be held in Coor Hall, Room 120 at ASU Tempe. For more details and a map, contact Karen Prosser at JSA at kprosser@jsa.org or 602/354-4535. You do not need to register in advance. But it would help in our planning if you let us know how many students and teachers will be attending. Some students come alone or with a few friends, while others attend with a busload of students and teachers from their school. Phoenix Hilton Suites Fall 2008 Newsletter 1

The Leadership Conference will be held in the Navajo Room in the Hilton Suites Hotel at Thomas Road and Central Avenue in the Midtown Art and Museum district in Phoenix. Tucson Transportation to the Leadership Conference Karen Prosser, a Junior Statesmen staff member, will be driving interested Tucson students and teachers to Phoenix for the Leadership Conference. All students and teachers who plan to attend the Leadership Conference should respond to kprosser@jsa.org or 602/354-4535. If you would like to take advantage of the free transportation from Tucson, you must confirm by filling out and returning the transportation form located in this newsletter. What is JSA? The Junior State of America (JSA) is a nationwide, nonpartisan, political education program for high school students. Founded in 1934, JSA is sponsored by The Junior Statesmen Foundation, in cooperation with high schools across the country. JSA chapters are school-sponsored clubs with faculty advisors. The educational philosophy of the organization is that students can best acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for active citizenship by running their own self-governing organization. continued on page 3 Fall 2008 Newsletter 2

Continued from page 2 JSA Motto: Democracy is not a spectator sport! During this school year, the Arizona Junior State will sponsor a conference at Arizona State University on Election 2008, Fall and Spring State Conventions on current issues, and a February simulation of the U.S. House and Senate. During the summer, Junior Statesmen sponsors a Symposium on Arizona leadership and politics, as well as academic Summer Schools on the campuses of Stanford, Georgetown, Yale and Princeton Universities. The establishment of the Arizona JSA program is funded by a major grant from the Melody Robidoux Foundation of Tucson. For more information contact: Junior Statesmen at 1015 N. Second Ave Unit 344B, Phoenix, AZ 85003 or rprosser@jsa.org or kprosser@jsa.org. Telephone: 602/354-4535. Or, you may find us on the web at www.jsa.org. Richard Prosser was Executive Director of The Junior Statesmen Foundation for 38 years. Under his leadership, JSA expanded from a program in only one state to a program now in thirty-four states. He looks forward to working to involve Arizona high school students and teachers in this unique educational program. Mr. Prosser has a life-long love of JSA which began when he joined the organization as a 9 th grader. Karen Prosser has been with Junior Statesmen for over 37 years. Under her leadership as Summer Programs Director, Summer School was expanded from one session in California to five sessions held at Georgetown, Yale, Princeton and Stanford Universities. She also helped develop the Symposia on state and local government, including the new Arizona Symposium. Karen and Richard Prosser are looking forward to meeting with students, parents, teachers and school administrators throughout the state. They are available to visit any Arizona high school to help JSA chapters get started.
