Memorial University of Newfoundland Publications Subvention Program Competition DEADLINES: MARCH 15 & NOVEMBER 15 by 5 p.m. For any deadlines which fall during a weekend or holiday, the deadline shall be the first working day following the deadline. Purpose The purpose of the Publications Subvention Program is to provide financial assistance to scholarly publishing from within the University community. While all forms of scholarly publication are eligible for support, priority will be given to original book-length manuscripts of merit. Book chapters and journal articles will be considered where funds permit. Eligibility 1. Any member of the university community. 2. Funds are limited and their allocation will be competitive in keeping with normative criteria of scholarly excellence. Term of Award Award must be utilized within 18 months of notification. Requests to extend the timeframe of the award must be submitted to the Office of the Vice President (Research) prior to the expiry date of the award and should explain the circumstances leading to the request. Categories of Financial Assistance The Committee will consider: 1. Subvention towards publication costs where the publisher makes this a condition of publication.* 2. Assistance towards cost of illustrative material (maps, photos, figures, and the like) after a manuscript has been accepted by a publisher. 3. Assistance towards costs of indexing the material accepted for publication. *Note: Memorial University Libraries have established an open access authors fund to assist in paying Author Processing Charges. Contractual Obligations 1. Recipients of a subvention from the Committee are obligated to re-pay 50% of any royalties up to the amount of the subvention. All re-payments will be deposited with the Publications Subvention Program. 2. Acknowledgement in the published work of the subvention(s) received. 3. Deposition of one copy of the published work with the University Library. Composition of the Committee 1. Committee members are appointed by the Vice-President (Research). 2. Members shall serve for a 3-year period (renewable once); they shall choose a chairperson from among their number B the chair serves for a 1-year period (renewable once). Obtain a Publication Subvention program application form; forms are available at the front desk of (IIC 2015, Bruneau Centre for Research and Innovation) or at the RGCS website: http://www.mun.ca/research/funding/opportunities/ 2. Document that every reasonable effort has been made to secure a subvention from other sources, or provide the reason why this could not be done. 3. Take note that the closing dates for completed applications are March 15 and November 15, annually; if the deadline falls on a weekend or public holiday, the next working day applies. The awards will be announced as soon as possible after the Committee has made its decision. 4. Take note that urgent requests for small sums can be entertained by the Committee outside the set dates. 5.
