SCHOLARSHIP About The Office of Academic Enhancement Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Education and University Academic Ombudsperson, Dr. John F. Barker, is the director of the Office of Academic Enhancement. The office comprises Multicultural Student Affairs (MSA), the Honors Program Office, the Academic & Career Advisor in Residence (ACAR) program, Prestigious Academic Awards and Scholarships, and the H Scholarship program. The primary focus of the Office of Academic Enhancement is to promote a diverse academic experience for all undergraduate students at the University of Miami, with particular focus on those groups who have been historically underrepresented in higher education. The office will address all aspects of the academic trajectories of highly talented undergraduate students, particularly in relation to their applications to national fellowship programs and graduate or professional degrees. In collaboration with University faculty members, senior leadership, and administration, the Office of Academic Enhancement will work to partner high-achieving undergraduate students with the program and award opportunities that are available for their particular skills and accomplishments. One very significant aspect of the Office of Academic Enhancement is the H Scholars program. About H In 1970, H was one of the first African-American administrators at the University of Miami, hired by Dr. William R. Butler, former Vice President of Student Affairs. H was first hired as the Associate Director of Student Financial Aid, where his expertise proved to be helpful to thousands of students. H had a love for music, and shortly after he arrived on campus, he came up with a proposal: to initiate a campus gospel-singing group. He became the advisor for the newly created Gospel Singers, later renamed the Inspirational Concert Choir (ICC). H s work ethic and impact on UM students led to his appointment as director of the Financial Aid Department. Several years later, he was named the first director of minority recruitment and the first director of minority affairs which has since become the Department of Multicultural Student Affairs. Throughout his UM career, H continued his advising role with ICC until his untimely death in 1992. He passed away without warning from a heart attack while on a university-related trip. His loss was felt by everyone on campus and in his honor, ICC was renamed the H-Butler Inspirational Concert Choir. Although H has passed on, the choir and his legacy continue on to this day. In honor of his legacy, UM s Office of Admission offers a number of full-tuition scholarships annually to students whose presence will enhance the learning environment through increased cultural diversity. (Special thanks to Dr. William Butler for providing this information.)
