Cities of 21 st century: New type of urban space Two driving forces: (1) Innovation economy + (2) Digital spatiality 1. The contemporary urban economy and society are dependent on innovation ecosystems: knowledge driven localities, innovation clusters, global hubs, creative cities. R&D, knowledge, innovation, learning and training have become main drivers of cities growth and prosperity. + 2. A new spatiality (digital) has been added on the physical and institutional space of cities, the urban agglomeration, city activities, infrastructures, regulation and planning. It is composed of broadband networks, user interfaces, internet applications, and e-services. Un umbrella of digital communication and cooperation over the cities.

Driver 1: Innovation clusters and ecosystems Local innovation systems, tech districts, clusters, supply chains, local alliances RESEARCH AND TECHNOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENT Research institutes University research R&D in large companies Innovative SMEs INNOVATION FINANCE Venture capital funds Technology incentives Regional incentives and aids Spin-offs / start-ups R&D Strategic company planning Innovatio n funding Market research TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER Co-operation between universities and companies Technology brokerage Licensing New product developm ent Producti on retooling Produc tion runs NEW PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT Provision of management, product, market, and quality services Specialised centres Business consultants PROCESS INNOVATION Clusters and networks Technology co-operation Supply chains Alliances Distribution & Promotion An interplay between individual innovation and local innovation environment takes place: Innovation ecosystems sustain innovation performance with respect to networks and interactions among companies, universities, and government. Open Innovation processes rely on external environment for R&D and innovation Geographical clustering of innovation enable tacit knowledge, trust relations and alliances Living labs, co-design, end-user involvement amplify creativities and innovations
