Dr David Wee Fong Han Scholarship 2 nd Year Nursing Students WITT is offering two scholarships of $600 each to support disadvantaged students in a further year of study towards a Bachelor of Nursing at Western Institute of Technology at Taranaki (WITT) This scholarship is awarded in memory of the late Dr David Wee Fong Han for his contribution to healthcare in Taranaki, and is available for students who have been studying full-time and are intending to continue their Nursing degree study at WITT in a further year of study. The main criteria are perseverance and motivation to succeed in spite of personal circumstances. Dr David Wee Fong Han (1924-2002) was born in Singapore. He studied medicine and was trained as a medical doctor at the University of Hong Kong. Dr Han and his family came to New Zealand in 1971. He practiced as a GP at Okato for three years before moving to New Plymouth where he served the community until he retired. Dr Han was a respected leader in the local Chinese community. He and his family highly value the good work done by the nursing professionals in Taranaki and want to assist students pursue their study. REGULATIONS 1. The purpose of the scholarship is to encourage disadvantaged students to undertake further Nursing study at the Western Institute of Technology at Taranaki. 2. The criteria for eligibility are that applicants must be: a) Either New Zealand citizens or have permanent residency. b) Presently studying full time (or have completed study) on the Nursing degree. c) Succeeding in their programme. d) Intending to continue their Nursing study in a further year at the Western Institute of Technology on a full year full time programme. 3. Selection of successful nominations will be made on the basis of evidence of perseverance and motivation to succeed in spite of personal circumstances e.g. financial hardship, disability, distance, family opposition. NOMINATION PROCESS 4. Submitted nominations should comprise: e) A statement prepared by the nominee outlining their case of applying for the scholarship, their reasons for undertaking study at present, details of their study to date. f) Supporting documentation as necessary. g) A supporting statement signed by the Head of School of Nursing which includes verification of the student s circumstances and confirmation of their current academic progress. 5. Nominations must be received by The Scholarship Co-ordinator, by 25th March 2016. Selection Panel 6. A Selection panel will be convened, comprising the Head of the School of Nursing, the Scholarship Co-ordinator and at least one other person nominated by the Scholarship Co-ordinator. 7. In making their selection, the panel may request further supporting documentation and/or interview short-listed candidates. Last updated September 2014 Page 2 of 6
Awards 8. The awards will constitute a letter of guarantee that the scholarship will be paid directly to the awardees once they provide WITT with a receipt for enrolment fees for their planned course of study for the following year. 9. Both successful and unsuccessful nominees will be notified of the outcome of their applications. Privacy Provisions 10. Applications for these scholarships are made on the understanding that WITT may wish to publicise the award of these scholarships. Any release of information to the media other than the name of the awardee and details of present and planned programmes of study will only be made with the expressed permission of the awardee.
