Students, housing and CAF As a student intending to rent a flat or stay in university halls of residence, you are eligible for housing benefit provided your resources meet certain conditions. The family benefits organisation (CAF) provides a web service to simplify the administrative formalities. Go to www.caf.fr and submit your housing benefit request online. This service enables you to: 6 submit your first application, or 6 update your dossier if you already receive benefits from CAF (and have a beneficiary number and confidential code). This practical guide sets out all the information you need to submit your housing benefit application online on www.caf.fr. CAF simplifies formalities Rent statement To simplify formalities, you will only need to provide a rent statement in certain cases; this will be specified at the end of your online application. Application on hold When applying for housing benefit for the first time, you can now place your online application on hold. The information entered is stored to enable you to finish your online application at a later date. A reference number will be sent to the e-mail address entered. If your situation changes during the year 6 Changes in your situation can alter the amount of your benefits. Any changes, such as a new bank, new professional activity, living as a couple, and so on, must be notified to CAF immediately. If you do not notify us of changes quickly, you will be asked to reimburse benefits which were overpaid. 6 Moving out? Remember to notify us of the date on which you move out. This will avoid you having to reimburse any excess benefit payments. Notify us of all changes of situation on www.caf.fr Staying in the same accommodation In May, CAF will ask you whether you will be staying in the same accommodation over the summer. As soon as you receive this request, you must log on to the Mon Compte (my account) section of www.caf.fr using your beneficiary number and confidential code. You can then click on the vous conservez votre logement (stay in the same accommodation) link (in a blue box at the bottom of the screen) and follow the instructions. Mon Compte, a mobile app to keep things simple To make your dealings with CAF even easier, the Mon Compte application can be downloaded free of charge from app stores. You can view your beneficiary account on a smartphone or tablet and access the main elements of your file: rights and payments, letters, e-mail messages, statements, certificates, recent online requests and alerts to remind you of any documents to be sent to CAF. People born in France do not need to provide civil status documents. 6 Non-EU nationals: a long stay "student" visa and, within three months of arriving in France, a photocopy of your passport showing the OFII (immigration authorities) stamp or the receipt provided by OFII. 6 EU nationals: proof of student status and a copy of your European health insurance card and a formal statement of sufficient resources.
