LOS ANGELES FIRE DEPARTMENT HISTORICAL SOCIETY (LAFDHS) MINUTES OF FEBRUARY 3, 2000 EXECUTIVE BOARD MEMBERS IN ATTENDANCE John Jacobsen, President Dan Cypert, Vice President Don Dodd, Treasurer Isabel Rosas, Secretary BOARD OF DIRECTORS Chris Cooper Joe Ortiz Jordan Pearl Bill Thost CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Minutes were tabled. FINANCIAL REPORT Don Dodd, Treasurer, reported for the month of February 2000, there is an approximate total of $35,000 in the LAFDHS combined checking and savings accounts. Introduction of Guest Joan Adan, of Flying Colors, Inc., was in attendance and introduced at this LAFD Historical Society meeting. Ms. Adan would like to schedule a Flying Colors, Inc. presentation for the LAFDHS in the near future. Flying Colors, Inc. recently was involved in the Burbank Police Museum project. COMMITTEE REPORTS Building Progress The General Services Department started preparing for repairs of Old Fire Station 27 (LAFDHS Museum) the first week in January and some work is already in progress. The new General Manager for the General Services Department met with John Jacobsen and seems to be very enthusiastic about his new position and helping repair the building. Everything looks good.

Page 2 Membership Drive Dan Cypert is putting together a comprehensive speaker's package for the LAFDHS Membership Drive so all persons representing LAFDHS are giving the same information at each presentation. The package includes an outline. The LAFDHS membership drive videos are ready and will be distributed to the following volunteers for the kickoff on February 7, 2000: VOLUNTEERS Battalion 1 Lane Kemper Battalion 2 Don Dodd Battalion 3 Dan Cypert Battalion 4 Mike Reagan Battalion 5 Roger Gillis Battalion 6 Frank Borden / Bill Dahlquist Battalions 7 and 9 Bob Defeo Battalions 10 and 14 Jordan Pearl Battalion 11 Jim Finn Battalion 12 Joe Ortiz Battalion 13 John Jacobsen Battalion 18 Dennis Frazier Headquarters, Isabel Rosas Supply and Maintenance and Training Division The LAFDHS Membership Committee s goal is to complete the drive in a two-week period. A Teletype will be sent out notifying all Department personnel that speakers will be coming out to the stations to make a presentation. The LAFDHS Membership Drive volunteers will contact Station Commanders to schedule times and dates of presentations. Payroll deduction cards, membership applications, flyers, and other printed information are included in the packet. Apparatus John Ackerman and Joe Ortiz have been designated to participate on the Apparatus Committee. No updates at this time. Representatives from Travel Town in Griffith Park will be attending a future LAFDHS meeting to update on the status of equipment at Travel Town. John Jacobsen has received additional calls regarding other antique apparatus that is available to the LAFDHS. Further information regarding additional antique apparatus and memorabilia will be discussed at future LAFDHS meetings. As of today, there is no status update on the apparatus being donated from Knott's Berry Farm.

Page 3 BOARD MEETING UPDATE One of the items discussed at the last LAFDHS Executive Board Meeting was Isabel Rosas liaisoning with the Department of General Services regarding a vacant City structure to store donated LAFDHS apparatus. The status of utilizing old Fire Station 6 is still uncertain, as is the use of Van Nuys airport hangers. The LAFDHS is still trying to locate office and storage space. The planned space for the LAFDHS memorabilia in the FHMTC has been withdrawn. A decision has been made by the LAFDHS Executive Board to possibly rent a facility and office and meeting room... perhaps even the possibility of acquiring some space at the Relief Association or Fire Credit Union. Negotiations are in the process. Education Component Bob Defeo is in charge of the LAFDHS Education Committee in the design of the Museum. Bill Rolland has made an offer to develop and establish an endowment for the education component of the Museum. Meetings are in progress at this point. A design firm for interior of Museum has been asked to submit designs for just the education component to include interactive displays, etc. This will provide Mr. Rolland with an idea of the approximate cost for the endowment. Interior Design of Museum Board Member Jordan Pearl is in charge of the Interior Design Committee of the Museum. Jordan Pearl has an extensive background in interior design of commercial buildings. DONATION During the meeting, John Nowell, Commander of the LAFD In-Service Training Section, made a donation of several file cabinets full of plate glass negatives containing the history of the LAFD. Volunteers are needed to help sort and catalog this material. LAFD Photo/Video Unit personnel will train volunteers to scan these negatives into computer format. HORSE-DRAWN FIRE APPARATUS Dale Thurow, Fire Station 24, B Platoon, is working with a company who owns 22 horses for hire for horse-drawn fire apparatus. He is planning to have four horses at the St. Patrick's Day Parade downtown for the steamer and the chemical wagon. The owner of the horses is interested in participating with the LAFDHS and possibly making some financial contributions. GRANTS The Getty Foundation conducted a seminar on Grant proposals on January 24, 2000. Chris Cooper was able to attend the Getty Foundation seminar and had the following to report:

Page 4 GRANTS (Continued) Two grant programs One grant is for the specific saving and restoration of architecturally historic buildings. 350 organizations were represented at the Getty Foundation Seminar. Chris Cooper received all the forms and information to prepare the Getty Grant application. Chris Cooper estimates approximately 20 to 25 hours will be necessary to complete the application. The grant might also include some cover letters (Fire Chief and possibly the General Manager of the General Services Department). Other City Department representatives were in attendance at this seminar and the LAFHDS would be competing with these other City departments for the grant money. There are no matching funds available with this grant. Deadline for the grant application is March 31, 2000. A Motion was made to allocate the funds to apply for this grant from the Getty Foundation. The motion was moved, seconded, and approved. Jordan Pearl mentioned the Goodridge Foundation in Pasadena... they assist with grants. OLD BUSINESS Pancake Breakfast There was a question about the location of the LAFDHS Pancake Breakfast this year due to the ongoing construction work at the Museum site. A discussion was held regarding holding the breakfast at the Museum site so visitors can view the ongoing construction work. It was unanimously decided that the LAFDHS Pancake Breakfast would be held on Fire Service Recognition Day, Saturday, May 13, 2000, at the Museum site. Not the entire Museum is closed off and the area for the breakfast will still be open. Volunteers with LAFDHS membership information will be at other sites, but the main focus should be at the Museum. The LAFDHS web site is still being created. The link is on the City webpage or through the Department web site at LAFD.ORG. Inventory Work Program A dozen volunteers completed a lot of work to get some of the framed photographs scanned and reproduced by an archivist at the Huntington Library. Volunteers are always needed to help on the weekends, usually the last Saturday of the month, from 0900 to 1200 hours, at the Supply and Maintenance building, 140 Avenue 19, Los Angeles. If you have an email address, please let LAFHDS know so when a work party is organized, it can be advertised quickly via the email.

Page 5 NEW BUSINESS A work party needs to be put together to remove excess lockers from Old 27's (LAFDHS Museum). A dumpster will be available. The space where the lockers will be removed from will be used as a display area within the Museum. ADJOURNMENT A motion to adjourn the meeting was made by Dennis Frazier and seconded by Jordan Pearl. NEXT MEETING The next LAFDHS meeting will be held on March 2, 2000, 0900 hours, at the Frank Hotchkin Memorial Training Center.
