PRESIDENT S MESSAGE - MY CERTIFICATION STORY When I decided to work towards the goal of obtaining my certification in oncology nursing, I was looking to increase my professional credibility. Becoming a nurse at a young age, I felt I was always trying to prove myself and my level of knowledge to providers, patients and other nurses. Once I knew oncology was where I wanted to stay for a while, I decided to lend credibility to my knowledge base and get certified. I enjoy challenging myself and wanted recognition for what I knew. I began studying and set a date to take the exam. Once I took it and passed and was able to add those credentials to my name it felt great! Having those letters provided recognition for the years of dedication to my field that I felt I deserved. For me it was about demonstrating my commitment to the profession and to my specialty. Obtaining my oncology nursing certification indicates to my employer that I am a valuable asset to my team and to my patients. My patients see the initials after my name and ask what it means. When I share that OCN means oncology certified nurse, they look so pleased. I believe they feel confident with my nursing care and with the knowledge I share with them regarding their diagnosis and treatment. Personally, it has given me a sense of pride and professional accomplishment and increased my confidence level. It has helped me be confident enough to accept the nomination for president of the Phoenix Oncology Nursing Society in 2015. I was so honored to then have been voted in as President elect for 2016 and President for 2017 and I know having the certification to back my knowledge up was an important factor for those who saw a leader in me! Shortly after I was able to advance my career to Clinical Manager of the oncology unit I worked on as a novice nurse. This really was full circle for me as an RN in Oncology and having my certification was the piece of the puzzle that gave me the added confidence to see what others could see and chase my professional dreams! I encourage all nurses to pursue certification as part of their professional development as well as personal accomplishment and gain the credibility nurses deserve! We want to offer our patients our very best and certification in oncology nursing truly makes a difference! The meetings on the second and fourth Thursday of each month are our membership meetings. If you are a student or retired, but still a member of PONS, we encourage you to attend these meetings! You ll have the opportunity to get up to date education and a fantastic dinner while networking with other nurses. NEW ANNUAL AWARDS CEREMONY The PONS Board of Directors is pleased to announce the new Excellence in Oncology Nursing Awards, which will be an ongoing annual recognition for our members. Starting this year at our December Board meeting, PONS will be hosting an annual awards ceremony to honor the RN and the APRN of the year for Excellence in Oncology Nursing. We are planning a formal event to honor two of our members and announce the election results with the new members of the 2018 board. We recognize that our membership is full of knowledgeable, compassionate and accomplished nurses and we want to celebrate you. In addition, the honorees will also receive monetary award of $500 from PONS. We ask that you submit the nominee s name and credentials, current role and a short essay telling us why the nominee should receive the award and send to PONSBoard@yahoo.com. We will accept applications through October 31, 2017. There are two awards; one for registered nurses and one for advanced practice registered nurses, nominees must be members of PONS to be eligible. We look forward to hearing about your many contributions to oncology nursing! ARIZONA LEGISLATURE UPDATE Denice Gibson, DNP, RN, CRNI, BMTCN, AOCNS ONS Arizona State Healthcare Policy Liaison Three hundred and fifty-three bills and resolutions were passed, 11 vetoed and 344 signed by the Governor. The AzNA Public Policy staff and volunteers evaluated and followed 63 nursing issue bills. Thirty-three of these bills passed. Here is AzNA s pass rate : Supported 23/36; Opposed 2/6; Monitored 9/21. Arizona draws closer to obtain Full Practice Authority with the passing of SB1133 CNM/NP and SB1336 CRNA with changes in scope of practice for CNMs, prescription privileges restored for CRNAs and collaboration language removed from the Nurse Practice Act. The remaining components will be for the CNS prescribing authority and changing the title for all roles to APRN instead of four unique titles of Nurse Practitioner, Certified Nurse Midwife, Clinical Nurse Specialist and Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists. Currently, 14 states and the Northern Mariana Islands have full practice authority for all four APRN roles. What can you do to make a difference? Make sure you are registered to vote. Please take the time to vote in the primary elections as well as the general elections. Get to know your legislature and build your personal and professional political capital. MEMBER SPOTLIGHT MOLLY DROUGHT, BSN, RN What is it to be a Bone Marrow Transplant Nurse? It was 3am on a hot summer night last year when I applied. Micah was 4 months old at the time and recently home from a week s stay at a local hospital where he fought a nasty case of Kawasaki disease. He was recovering but sleeping terribly. After what felt like the 20th wake-up that night, I decided to hop online and look for job postings at the hospital I so dearly loved for saving my son s life. Being a single mom, I was looking for an inpatient position to allow for more full days at home with my baby. The first posting read BMT. Soon after googling the title, I became very intrigued. Something about Bone Marrow Transplant struck an interest in me immediately and, with fingers crossed, I filled out the application and hit the send button. We love reading your work! and fell in love with the staff and patients I met that day. I prayed for a job offer and a few days later, HR called and those prayers were answered. My first day on the unit started with a 3-minute surgical scrub and ended comforting a 19- year-old boy with one of the nastiest cases of Graph-Versus-Host Disease I have ever seen. I was a little shocked as I walked to my car and recapped the day, but I immediately fell in love with the uniqueness of BMT. The patients are constantly saying thank you, calling us angels, and apologizing for their embarrassments. Even in the last moments of life, someone is thanking me for simply doing my job. What I didn t realize when I applied that night, was how much more my career would come to mean to me. Not only am I able to afford a beautiful home for my son and I, but I get to go to work every day excited to see my patients. I check-in on those who I ve grown to know and love over the weeks that have been on the unit. I spend time getting to know my new patients, answering their questions and calming their fears. We laugh, we cry, we pray, we exchange pictures of children their families become our family. Some days I witness miracles. Other days, I help someone comfortably pass. It s an emotional rollercoaster. Nobody could have explained to me how it Continued on page 6 Page 5 of 6
Continued from page 5 would feel to love so many people who could (and sometimes would) slip away as quickly as they do. It s also impossible to express how incredibly fulfilling it is to wheel them out of the double doors, down to their car with a loved-one, hug them goodbye, and know the fight they ve won from diagnosis to that very moment. They get to live to see another beautiful day. There is an immense amount of pride in this job. In life, I tend to believe the troubles are what make the triumphs so sweet. That has become even more clear in the moments I have experienced on the unit. The mantra written on my bathroom mirror reads, do what you love, love what you do.
