LE I and above Intro to MCJROTC 1 Purpose: Gives people a reason to do things. Motivation: Gives others the will to do everything they can to accomplish a mission. Direction: You communicate the way you want to accomplish a mission. Leadership Objectives: Mission accomplishment: the primary objective of leadership Troop Welfare: the secondary objective of leadership (A person s health, comfort, and happiness) Introduction to Drill: Preparatory Command: states the movement that the leader wants subordinates to perform and mentally prepares them for its execution. Command of Execution: signals when subordinates are to execute the movement. Marine Corps Values Honor: the quality that guides Marines to exemplify ethical and moral behavior. Courage: a mental quality that recognizes fear of danger or criticism, but enables a leader to proceed in the face of it with calmness and firmness. Commitment: is about keeping the determination to achieve excellence in any endeavor Leaders are often put in situations where two or more values conflict, otherwise known as a dilemma. Managing Your Stress: Stress: is the way your body reacts and adjusts to the psychological demands of life. Fight or Flight: response is developed by primitive human beings to deal with physical threats by either fighting or fleeing. Physically active people who eat well and get plenty of sleep tend to feel less depressed than people with less healthy lifestyles. Responsibility: the obligation to act or do a task that one must answer for, either to team members or to supervisors. Authority: the legitimate power of a leader to direct individuals to take action within the scope of the leader s position. Accountability results in rewards for good performance and punishment for poor performance. Accountability: is the cornerstone of leadership.

Roles of an Officer 7 Adaptability: Is an element in an officer s decision making role Officers are responsible for improving themselves The Marine NCO is the backbone of the Corps The decision-making role is characterized by the officer s duty to plan and organize. Purpose of the NCO: Decentralize authority Afford avenues for advancement Provide links between Officers and enlisted men Provide a senior enlisted advisor for the commander Recognize and reward outstanding skills Motivational Principles and Techniques Motivation: Commitment that is generally based on pride and unit integrity, and the firm adherence to the Marine Corps code of conduct. Positive Reinforcement: Rewards that succeed in satisfying the individual s social needs by showing that they are appreciated and needed by the leader and the unit. Morale: The mental, emotional, and spiritual state of an individual. Self-Motivation is the most powerful form of motivation. Individual and Team Training Three steps should be used in preparing and conducting training: 1. Describe the desired results of training. 2. Prepare to conduct the training. 3. Conduct training to the required standards. By working cooperatively, you can improve: leadership abilities followership abilities communication skills Marine Discipline Military discipline is the state of order and obedience among military personnel resulting from training. Two qualities the Marine Corps wants in its leaders are _self-control_ and a sense of personal _responsibility. Proficiency Defined The Marine Corps defines proficiency as the technical, tactical, and physical ability of the individuals in the unit to accomplish the mission.

LE III and Above: 8 Importance of inspections and Evaluations: A Marine is expected to always maintain a high level of personal conduct and professional proficiency. Inspection: when officials visit a place or group of people and check carefully to find out whether regulations are being obeyed. Evaluations: when you consider someone or something in order to make a judgment about them. A Marine is expected to always maintain a high level of personal conduct and professional proficiency. Completing and maintaining performance evaluation records for subordinates is a critical responsibility for a leader. Leadership Styles: Authoritarian: subordinates are told what is to be done and how it is to be done without the leader consulting others for advice or ideas. Participative: involves the ideas and advice of others. Delegative: your decision will concern assigning a specific task to a specific individual. Current Events: Current Events are newsworthy occurrences that happen in the present time. Following current events, you will be able to speak intelligently to a variety of people.

LE IV: Portrait of Patriots 9 Patriots: some who loves, defends, or supports the ideals of their country. Sexual harassment is a form of discrimination that involves unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature 3 Types of Sexual Harrasment Verbal: Whistling, rude noises, comments, sexual questions, off-color jokes, spreading rumors about someone s sex life Nonverbal: Staring at someone s body, displaying sexually suggestive visuals, sexually oriented entertainment, gestures Physical: Unwanted touching, hugging, kissing, pinching, patting, bumping, cornering, or blocking Fraternization is the term used to describe improper personal and business relationships among Marines of different ranks or positions.
