Festival for Urban Space Creation in Feldkirch Design, Photography and Media Art 25 October 12 November 2017 www.potentiale.at announcement 2017

ABOUT THE FESTIVAL For years now we have been working strategically on a fundamental urban revival in Feldkirch. Fundamental in the sense of Feldkirch s humanistic roots. Revival in the sense of cultural diversity. These topics are made visible with a sustainable programme mainly in Feldkirch itself, but also beyond the borders surrounding Feldkirch and the Rhine Valley. The city as a public space and POTENTIALe as a cultural festival for urban design and development create possibilities that are atmospherically charged. The festival will be the venue for four different programmes: FAIR, TALENTS, PROJECTS and NETWORKS. The focus is on the use of very different venues, the rediscovery of deserted places and abandoned premises, and innovative projects and partnerships that once again remind Feldkirch of its dormant potential. POTENTIALe FAIR 9 12 November 2017 Participants from the branches of design and photography present their works, invite you to exchange ideas with them and offer their products for sale. POTENTIALe TALENTS 9 12 November 2017 Temporary vacant premises are revived and alternative uses are shown. Colleges, students and design newbies present their current works and projects to a wide audience. POTENTIALe PROJECTS 25 October 12 November 2017 Platform for projects and events in public space. Urban space becomes a temporary stage. Everything is possible; some things even remain. POTENTIALe NETWORKS 25 October 12 November 2017 In addition to the curated formats, POTENTIALe is the event for network partners to implement multifaceted events, such as exhibitions, seminars and workshops.

Organiser Stadtmarketing und Tourismus Feldkirch GmbH is the organiser. Since the very beginning of the event an experienced and theme-oriented team has been responsible for its organisation. A year-round equipped office guarantees professional planning and enables personal contact with the team. Expert council and applications In the interests of profile orientation, securing high quality events and also to maintain a healthy balance of different disciplines, an application process is essential. All applications are put before an expert council, who will decide which applications are approved. This year the expert council focuses on self-generated products. Applications can only be made using the online-application form, which includes information on fees and other details: www.potentiale. at/applynow. As the exhibition space and number of exhibitors is limited, we recommend early application. Each exhibitor will be informed in writing about the decision of the board of trustees. Visitors With its ideal location (close to south Germany, Switzerland and Liechtenstein), this cultural festival attracts around 10,000 visitors annually people who are international, versatile, interested in high culture as well as subculture and with high spending power. Advertising and public relations Media work Intensive regional and transregional public relations (Austria, Germany, Switzerland and Liechtenstein) Communication Website, social media, direct mailings, classifieds, PR circles, radio ads, TV ads and promotional material External advertising Location branding, artistic signs, banners and placards in Vorarlberg and neighbouring areas.

POTENTIALe FAIR Sales Platform for Design and Photography 9 12 November Application deadline: 1 June As an elementary part of the cultural festival, the POTENTIALe FAIR (formerly ArtDesign Feldkirch) opens its doors for the 11th time to up to 110 exhibitors from the fields of design and photography. The FAIR is an interdisciplinary sales platform whose aim is create an ideal format for the marketing and distribution of works and products in different venues, and enables multi-faceted network of contacts. In addition to the classic work exhibition with its categories of applied art, design and fashion, as well as artistic photography, designers and artists in the workshop can show the process of bringing products to life, and offer products for sale. Feldkirch s perfect location and continual work on this event concept have helped the FAIR enjoy a good reputation in the design scene and be able to welcome top-class exhibitors every year.

EXHIBITORS The tender is international. Anyone can apply who designs and/or manufactures exhibition goods/objects. Participation is generally granted to those with a valid business license or who are recognised as an artist, designer, photographer or professional institution. All exhibitors in the categories Workshop, Showcase and Photo are obliged to declare and label their works as objects for sale (price marking obligatory). To ensure the quality of the exhibition and its attractiveness to visitors, the number of exhibitors is limited to 110. In the applied art category current works are allowed by representatives of all trades (glass, porcelain, clay, wood, stone, textiles, metals, etc.). Innovative production methods and a perfect practical implementation are required. The works by designers and artists must be as individual productions or small batches and/or designed and presented by them. Galleries may also apply in this sector. The Photo category also applies to artists who stand out with their media art formats (video, animation, projection etc.) In the design category admission extends to all disciplines of product and industry designs, graphic and communication designs designed, executed and offered for sale by designers and manufacturers. A selective and high-quality spectrum of exhibition goods and services with innovative, forward-looking and sustainable design solutions should meet the demands of the sales fair. The fashion category primarily applies to new labels and brands, but also shops that offer fashion, accessories, and jewellery design in small batches or as unique works of their own design or of recognised artists and designers. The latest trend designs and designer-oriented novelties should find a platform here. Participation is open to designers, stylists and manufacturers. In the photography category photographers are eligible who are currently working in this area and whose works stand out with a special degree of originality. The focus is on conceptual and artistic photography. The works submitted will be considered under technical and social aspects. The Photo venue is to be understood as a sales platform, rather than a museum exhibition, which is why all stands must be manned at all times. Designers, artists and photographers, who opt for the Workshop presentation and sales platform, provide an insight into their daily work on site, demonstrating starting materials and work processes, producing live for the visitors and so make their development process visible and tangible. Furthermore allowed: Providers of printed works (books, catalogues, magazines) on architecture, photography, media art, design, culture, art, and fashion; presentations from institutions, from cultural operators and museums, from educational institutions and art insurers.

STAND ALLOCATION & FEES FAIR ARCHITECTURE & STAND DESIGN Special requests for stand location will be taken into account where possible, if they are compatible with the overall concept of the event. Joint stands are possible; however, each co-exhibitor must apply and go through the jury proceedings. Confirmation of admission is binding for exhibitors and promoters. Please note the cancellation policy and further details in the terms and conditions. Stand fees include: floor space and stand construction systems, ie. partition walls in lightweight constructions on up to three sides of the floor area (depending on position as head, corner or middle stand), uniform stand lettering and background lighting, but not individual stand lighting. Depending on branch/sector, location and stand position, stands without stand construction systems, ie. partition walls, are available but without reduction in the stand fees. Prices for additional services are available online at www.potentiale.at/applynow. Specific location requirements will be regarded according to availability (for a fee: corner stand + 5%, head stand + 10%, island stand + 15%). The application and event fees include marketing initiatives, advertising material, admission in the list of exhibitors, invitations (i.e. free entrance tickets for two people for the opening or Friday/Saturday-Night 7pm-10pm) and up to three free exhibitor passes. The overall visual impression of the POTENTIALe FAIR is an extremely important part of the fair concept. Therefore, sophisticated stand design is mandatory. The allocation of stands is to be made by the organisers. Showcase: All stands are equipped with white painted wooden partition walls, on which nails, screws or glue may be applied. The minimum stand size (8m²) is mandatory at this location; stand sizes of up to 40m² are available. Individual stand lighting and power connections, as well as extra stand fittings, can be ordered for a fee. Workshop: All stands are equipped with individually fittable wooden modules (shelf compartments, clothes rails, pin boards, etc.), as well as an adjustable workbench. Professional lighting and a power connection are included in the stand fees. Any extra stand fittings can be ordered for a fee. Floor space is available at 20 m², 30 m² and 40 m². Photo: All stands are equipped with white painted walls, on which nails or screws can be used, or that can be glued. Minimum size is 6 m². Individual stand lighting and power connections, as well as extra stand fittings, are available to order for a fee. The stand design must not extend above the stand construction. This applies to all stands in all venues. Exceptions may only be made individually and only after consultation with the organisers up to four weeks before the exhibition starts. More information is available online at https://www.potentiale.at/applynow FINANCIAL REPORTING Following a positive approval by the expert council, notification regarding the position and size of the stand, as well as fair costs will be sent. Invoices are issued in Euros. The invoice amount is due in full within 14 days of the date of invoice. Prompt payment of the stand fee is required in order to secure the stand. If chargeable extra services are taken, these shall be charged during or after the FAIR by the service providers. This amount is to be paid in full within 14 days of the date of invoice.

POTENTIALe TALENTS Urban Vacancies for Universities, Students and Design Newbies 9 12 November Application deadline: 1 June Culture doesn t only take root in whitewashed galleries and pretty exhibition houses, but everywhere, where you let it. As in the past two years, through the format TA- LENTS disused places are sought out. Their uselessness is brought into question and you can experience new uses for inner city areas. Whether in the form of pieces of furniture, fashion, jewellery, as an installation or a performance; young designers, colleges, students and collectives can break familiar habits and create new space experiences. The revival for the festival allows Feldkirch s creative potential come to the forefront once more, and promotes new impetus in the direction of a sustainable and dynamic urban development. The format TALENTS provides presentation platforms in urban and private vacant premises, in which current works, innovative products and a wide variety of possible uses can be presented and tried out. At least one of the focal points of the POTENTIALe must be addressed: urban design, photography or media art. Through the analysis of current social themes, visitors of the PO- TENTIALe are shown new approaches, which stimulate thought and present creative solutions. Above all, the younger target audience is brought into contact with college programmes and innovative thought patterns and given an initial insight into the educational side of the cultural sector. OPENING TIMES Thu 9 November, 5pm 10pm (Opening) Fri 10 November, 1pm 10pm Sat 11 November, 1pm 10pm Sun 12 November, 10am 6pm During opening times all exhibition stands must be occupied. CONSTRUCTION Wed 8 November, 8am 10pm Thu 9 November, 8am 3pm Stand inspection 3pm-4pm The person responsible must sign the stand inspection protocol. Participation is free of charge for individual groups (students, design newbies*). Institutions and organisations are charged a participation fee of 600 Euro DISMANTLING Sun 12 November, 6pm 9pm Mon 13 November, 8am 12pm * label creation or graduated less than three years ago

ROOM ALLOCATION & IMPLEMENTATION COSTS According to the sizes of groups, works and projects submitted, rooms are divided into units or handed over completely. Detailed information on the required infrastructure, room size (incl. height), as well as exact project details are to be submitted in the application. Rooms can be viewed on request. Following the project duration, all rooms must be left clean, which is the responsibility of the participants. As little waste should be produced as possible. Participation is free of charge for students and design newbies, i.e. no exhibition or registration fees apply. The event organisers also take on responsibility for any necessary infrastructure costs for the duration of the project, such as power, basic lighting and water. Each project team pays for their own material costs, individual lighting, transport, arrival and departure or accommodation. Institutions and organisations will be charged a fee of 600 Euro.

POTENTIALe PROJECTS Platform for Temporary Projects in Public Space 25 October 12 November Application deadline: 30 June Through the programme format PROJECTS, temporary activities in public areas are given a platform in which to try out. In addition to various public places in the town centre, the perception of the Reichenfeld area as a cultural district in Feldkirch is addressed and used. This area, closely connected to the old town, can be viewed as an area for the future, in which the prison and the academy of music are located. The Reichenfeld area is prototypical for a change that has been sweeping through Feldkirch over the past five years. While historical credibility is anchored in the old town, this area is developing more and more into an artistic laboratory for the future, not least through the POTENTIALe FAIR that takes place in its central buildings. PROJECT DURATION AND APPROVALS The duration of individual projects can be coordinated with other event dates. Project submissions are to include detailed information on infrastructure, plan sketches, size dimensions and important information on its influence on the surrounding public area. Any necessary approvals from the Town of Feldkirch or other owners must be obtained from the individual responsible themselves and put before the festival team. We are happy to help you in this and will make the initial contact, if necessary. Those who remember the return of the Feldhotel in 2015 or the ball-shaped silent film cinema last year know how quickly things that seem to appear overnight can shake up their surrounding environment. POTENTIALe PROJECTS are the uninvited guests who turn up and don t want to leave (at least in the heads of those around them). Thematically, they outline contrasts that cannot be united, or loudly attract attention, only to be quiet. This is possibly the most experimental format of POTEN- TIALe and views design as a socio-political instrument, forcing its viewers to reconsider their usual viewpoints. COSTS AND VENUES Participation is free of charge for all those interested, i.e. there are no application fees. Costs for any necessary infrastructure, such as power, sound, lighting or water, and for materials, transport, arrival and departure, and accommodation are the responsibility of each individual project team. In some cases, regional sponsorships will support individual projects with financial or material support. Early notification of the project costs is necessary. Following the project duration, all venues must be left clean, which is the responsibility of the participants. As little waste should be produced as possible.

POTENTIALe NETWORKS Cooperations for Local Organisers of Cultural Events 25 October 12 November Application deadline: 30 June Once again the cultural festival POTENTIALe, is open for local cultural businesses, associations and initiatives. The cooperation with diverse cultural protagonists lies at the heart of the festival, as a deep and lasting exploration of cultural opportunities for urban design can only take place on a collective level. To be part of the POTENTIALe network means to organise a series of events, a project, an exhibition or similar for the duration of the festival, dealing with one of the following topics: urban design, photography, design or media art. All content will be communicated as part of the cultural festival and integrated in the POTENTIALe channels. In this way, each network partner and the POTENTIALe itself benefits as a connected element. Each individual partner is responsible for the organisation, implementation and funding of their own project. The programme duration or dates can be individually arranged to coordinate with the other events.
