For the first time, the Rotary Club of Woodstock is sponsoring a Trap Shoot competition. Trap Shoot is a unique event where teams of five compete against each other by shooting clay pigeons for high score. The half-day event combines fellowship, marksmanship, but most of all fun for sporting clay enthusiasts, experts and novices. The competition is a good way to learn the game, in the company of veteran trap shooters. The fundraiser is scheduled for Saturday, September 22 at French s River Farm, Helsley Bridge Road, in Woodstock. Tickets include breakfast and lunch catered by Shafer s, the chance at cash awards, and 50 clays per shooter. Participants bring 20 or 12 gauge shot guns, ammunition (7.5 to 9 shot), ear and eye protection. Each shooter is provided with two rounds of 25 clays, shooting on two different fields. Individual shooters will be placed on teams along with four others. A cash award awaits the top team and the top shooter. Proceeds go to the Rotary s annual Coats for Kids Page 2 of 37

Over the last eight years of this project, we have seen how parents struggle to make ends meet in an ever-worsening economy, explained Dave Herman, Chair of the Trap Shoot event. The Rotary Club issues an invitation to businesses, fire companies, police departments, neighbors and individuals to challenge each other in what is expected to become an annual event. Hunters may want to try their hand at this alternate form of shooting as well. Tickets are $75 each for individuals; $375 for a team of five people. Businesses interested in sponsoring a team, or donating $100 are welcome to promote their company, product or service at the event. NEWS RELEASE For Release: Immediately Contact: Annette Petrick 540-436-8787 Annette@petrickoutsourcing.com Rotary to Provide 15 Scholarships Woodstock VA May 8, 2012 - Fifteen scholarships of $1,000 each will be awarded to Shenandoah County students this year. Announcement has been made by William Gentry, Chair of the Scholarship Committee for the Rotary Club of Woodstock. Local students interested in applying for a scholarship can pick up an application at the Guidance Office at Central High School. Scholarships will be awarded to students who plan to continue their education in college or a technical or trade school. Scholarships are funded by the Rotary Club of Woodstock Foundation and a bequest made to the Club from the estate of Marlin P. Krouse, a teacher, naturalist, artist and actor who was a resident of Fort Valley. Since 2005, the club has awarded $82,000 in scholarships for local high school graduates. X X-X Page 6 of 37

As new officers and board members take on their duties, the club extended thanks to Dennis William Pence, who served as president of the Club for the last year. The local club is part of Rotary International, a service organization with more than 1.2 million members worldwide in 3400 community-based clubs. On the international scene, Rotary s priorities are the eradication of polio, the providing of clean water and the promotion of literacy. The Woodstock Rotary Club recently donated $10,000 to the Shenandoah County Free Clinic, toward the planned dental department. Fifteen scholarships were awarded this year to high school graduates and students entering Lord Fairfax Community College. In the last five years, the Woodstock Club has provided over $82,000 in scholarships. The Club sponsors Interact Clubs encouraging leadership among teenagers at both Central High School and Massanutten Military Academy. Jeremy McCleary serves as President-Elect on the new Woodstock Club team. Vice President is Kevin Gutshall. Kim Ryman continues in the position of Treasurer with Marcia Cutter continuing as Secretary. Ingrid Thompson is new to the position of Club Internet Communications Officer. Rounding out the new leadership team are board members Ed Markel and Sharon Collette. Bob Claytor chairs the Woodstock Rotary Foundation. The Rotary Club meets each Wednesday at 12:05 p.m. at the Moose Lodge in Woodstock. Members are mainly business owners or managers and professionals current or retired - who live or work in the Woodstock area. With a donation of $6,000, the clubs are enhancing the use of e-books by children ages 10 to 18 and providing additional books for electronic reading. The Rotary Clubs of New Market, Strasburg, Woodstock and Mt. Jackson/Edinburg secured a matching grant to fund the new project. Addressing the Woodstock Club, Library Director Sandy Whitesides explained how new cards will be prepared and distributed and new books made available. Rotary Clubs sponsor literacy programs of all kinds, worldwide. The Woodstock Club previously collaborated with Boy Scouts to build book shelves and provide print books for the Peter Muhlenberg Middle School. This year, a reading garden at the school is being developed. Dozens of Rotarians also participate in a reading program at the Robinson Elementary School. September 5, 2012 - Here comes Fun on Wheels a Poker Run, sponsored jointly by the Rotary Clubs of the Shenandoah Valley. You are invited to participate on your motorcycle, in your family car, SUV, truck or motor home. A Poker Run is an organized event where participants drive to various checkpoints and draw a playing card at each one. The object is to have the best poker hand at the end of the run. On Saturday, September 29, the stops will be in each town of the Valley where a Rotary Club is located - Strasburg, Luray, Broadway/Timberville, New Market, Edinburg and Woodstock. At every stop along the way, there will be rest rooms and refreshments. This is a brand new event and a brand new collaboration on a fundraiser for Rotary Clubs in the Shenandoah Valley, stated Kathy Kanter of the Strasburg Club, Chair of the regional event. Driver fee to participate is $25. At the end of the run, there are cash prizes for the person with the best poker hand, the worst poker hand and the most aces. There is also a 50/50 raffle and door prizes. Proceeds from the fundraiser go to Stop Hunger Now, a Rotary-sponsored nationwide program to provide food to Americans where it is needed. Record participation for a Poker Run was 2,136 motorcyclists who ran in 2009 to benefit the Fallen Firefighter Survivors Foundation. While we don t expect that kind of turn-out in this, our first such event, we will have groups leave at staggered starts with a group captain leading the way, stated Cena Simmons, coordinator from the Woodstock Club. The Poker Run starts at the Strasburg Town Park and ends at the Woodstock Shopping Center at the north end of Woodstock, with six stops along the 90 mile mapped route. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and staggered groups will drive off, starting at 10 a.m. There is no race component to the event. It is strictly the luck of the draw as to which poker hand cards a driver picks up at each stop. This is a wonderful way to spend a Saturday on beautiful winding country roads among the delightful autumn foliage of the Shenandoah Valley, Kanter pointed out. This is the third year that the Rotary Club of Woodstock has sponsored the competition. The prize is an all expense paid trip to Blacksburg, VA for an intensive leadership training program at Virginia Tech in December. This is an opportunity for outstanding teens to build even further confidence and self-esteem, stated RYLA Chair Ann Stalbird of Edward Jones. The competition was open to Shenandoah County students in junior and senior years of high school. Valcourt presented her winning essay on Alcohol and Drug Abuse for Teens to a full house of Rotarians at a recent luncheon meeting. She will present again at the RYLA Leadership weekend, competing for the grand prize of a trip to the Homestead Inn in March of 2013 and recognition at the annual Rotary District meeting. NEWS RELEASE For Release: Immediately Contact: Annette Petrick 540-436-8787 Annette@petrickoutsourcing.com Teens Raise Funds to Help Woodstock, VA., November 6, 2012 - Student leaders recently reported on assertive fund raising activities undertaken locally by Interact Club members. Interact is Rotary International's service club for young people ages 12 to 18. The Rotary Club of Woodstock sponsors Interact Clubs at two local schools. President Grace Alliali of Massanutten Military Academy led a Halloween candy fund raiser at the school that brought in over $400 toward free wheelchairs. Students at MMI have already raised over $1,000, toward a $3,500 goal for a project to help victims of Haiti s earthquake. At the military academy, 27% of cadets are members of the Interact Club. At Central High School, fund raising is underway for Coats for Kids, the local project that provides new coats for school children in the Shenandoah Valley. A trap shoot recently held by the Rotary Club of Woodstock provided enough funds for 50 coats. Over the nine years of the project, over 1,000 children have enjoyed the warmth of new coats. President Claudia Ortega reported that student members from Central will join dozens of Rotarians and their families who fill and deliver gift baskets of food, toys and clothing throughout the valley on Christmas Eve. Secretary Allison Bright added that the Interact Club at CHS is raising funds for the food project, Stop Hunger Now. This money will be added to the $7,600 raised recently for Stop Hunger Now by Rotary Clubs throughout the valley that sponsored and participated in a Poker Run. NEWS RELEASE For Release: Immediately Contact: Annette Petrick 540-436-8787 Annette@petrickoutsourcing.com Rotary Christmas Eve Gift Deliveries WOODSTOCK, VA November 27, 2012 - The Rotary Club of Woodstock has begun its annual drive to fund its Christmas Eve delivery of toys and food throughout Central Shenandoah County. Santa leads the caravan, in an antique fire engine, followed by a parade of cars bearing gifts. Rotarians contribute to the drive at each weekly meeting in November and December, and accept donations of money and food from the community. The program has been run for decades in collaboration with several generations of the Grabill family. More than forty households will be visited this year. The Rotary Club took over the project in 1933 and it has been an annual event for the local club for nearly 80 years. Dozens of Rotary members and teen age Interact Club members from Massanutten Military Academy and Central High School spend Christmas Eve morning filling boxes with donated food and gifts, which are then delivered throughout the county. Recipients are recommended by local agencies and Rotarians who are aware of families who could use a helping hand this year. Many of the Club s other activities encourage literacy. Earlier this year, more than 200 dictionaries were distributed to third graders at W. W. Robinson School. Rotarians participate in a reading program for students at Peter Muhlenberg Middle School. In cooperation with the Shenandoah County Library, the Rotary Club made library cards available to students and added to the e-book offerings for students. The Coats for Kids program provided 55 new coats to local children this year. Several more are being included in the gift boxes distributed on Christmas Eve. The Rotary Club led the Woodstock Christmas parade, transporting Santa Claus to town in the same antique fire truck that will deliver gifts on Christmas Eve. Rotary Club President Shelley Schechtel thanked community supporters for their contributions and added, Your generosity is a blessing.
