Congratulations to the 2015 Nursing Home Challenge Winners! 1st Place Vimy Court, Bible Hill 2nd Place St. Anne Centre, Arichat 3rd Place Wolfville Nursing Home, Wolfville
Congratulations to our Nursing Home Challenge Participants! 1st Place - Vimy Court, Bible Hill Congratulations Vimy Court on your second win in our Nursing Home Challenge!! At Vimy Court fund raising is a yearlong event. They have committed to working 12 months a year to help the Alzheimer Society fight against dementia. Every year they do a 50/50 Lotto which runs for 12 months. They also hold tea and bake sales at Christmas and Thanksgiving. Throughout the year they hold many ticket draws for wonderful donated prizes, and give incentives to participants who choose to collect pledges by entering them in these draws when they reach a particular pledge amount. The Walk at Vimy Court has evolved into a true community event. The amount of hard work and dedication that the staff and volunteers put in to their mission of supporting Nova Scotians with dementia 12 months of the year is truly inspiring. A special thank you to Catherine Stewart who is an amazing champion for this cause!!
2nd Place - St. Anne Centre, Arichat On July 11 there was a celebration in Arichat. The staff and residents of the St. Anne Nursing Home participated in the Nursing Home Challenge and put on a fantastic event. After a walk through the community, participants were invited back to enjoy a barbecue, cake and door prizes in the sun. The staff, residents, family, and community members came together to raise awareness for Alzheimer s disease and funds for those living with dementia. What an amazing community event. Thank you to the community of Arichat for all of your hard work and congratulations on winning second place in the Nursing Home Challenge! 3rd Place - Wolfville Nursing Home, Wolfville The town of Wolfville came out in full support of the Wolfville Nursing Home as they once again toured the town in support of Nova Scotians living with dementia. From local law enforcement directing traffic, to the tiny tots at the daycare walking alongside the nursing home residents; it truly was an incredible day and a great celebration of community. There were 210 walkers, including 34 residents. They also had the support of 39 businesses and organizations. The day ended with wonderful barbecue and auction. A special thanks to Cochrane s Pharmasave for their support in the organization and donation of prizes.
Congratulations to our Nursing Home Challenge Participants! Tideview Terrace, Digby Tideview Terrace hosted a Walk for Alzheimer s event on July 4. It was a community event where many residents, family, staff and community members came together for a cause that has touched many lives. Money was raised for the event by having a community barbecue, collecting pledges, and the raffle of a large wicker basket filled with goodies donated by area businesses. A one-of a-kind framed photograph taken by one of the residents living with Alzheimer s disease was also raffled. The community walk ended at Tideview Terrace with live music, ice cream, the raffle draw, and bubbles galore. The Walk for Alzheimer s brought the residents and the community together where many stories and memories were shared. Bissett Court, Cole Harbour The event at Bissett Court was held on July 22nd. They held an indoor walk that included the entire facility and finished with a milkshake fundraiser! There were approximately 25 participants including staff, residents and volunteers in attendance. A great time was had by all! High-Crest, Springhill The Springhill Walk took place on August 26th. The weather held out, no rain! They kicked off the campaign a few weeks earlier by posting notices around the facility encouraging participation from staff, families and residents. The activity department made signs for the residents to carry at the Walk. About three dozen people: staff, residents and family members, took part in the 20 minute walk. The mood was happy and everyone enjoyed themselves. The residents especially loved the event, because not only did they get out for a Walk, which is a favourite activity, but in doing so they were supporting Nova Scotians living with dementia, and that just made it all the more special.
Congratulations to our Nursing Home Challenge Participants! Cedarstone, Truro It was a beautiful day overlooking the hills of Truro when Cedarstone held their Walk for Alzheimer s. Family members, friends, and children from the nearby elementary school, volunteered to help those living in the facility participate in the Walk. After a stroll around the gardens, everyone was treated to musical entertainment in the lobby, where the raffle prize (a hockey jersey autographed by an NHL player) was drawn. Dykeland Lodge, Windsor Dykeland Lodge had a great turnout for their Walk event. Everyone was pleased by the level of participation; family members came from as far away as Texas, as well as volunteers, and staff representatives from all departments. The day was outstanding and everyone was in great spirits. Following the walk there was a barbecue and all those who walked enjoyed hot dogs, cookies and cold pop. All in all, the walk was a huge success! Glasgow Hall, Dartmouth On a sunny day in June, the staff and residents of Glasgow Hall decided to celebrate the lives of those living with Alzheimer s disease and other dementias by hosting a fundraising event. But this would prove no ordinary event. The residents had taken on the responsibility of raising butterflies for the month preceding the Walk, and the climax of the event would be the release of these new facility pets. Everyone gathered around the gazebo and anticipated the big moment when a flurry of beautiful butterflies would ripple through the blue sky. Everyone was excited to see the efforts of their care. The cage was open and the butterflies trickled out, scared to leave their home. There were butterflies everywhere, landing on staff and residents. It was a great idea and the residents absolutely loved it.
Congratulations to our Nursing Home Challenge Participants! Grandview Manor, Berwick Almost 80 individuals (residents, staff members, family members and volunteers) participated in the Grandview Manor Walk event. It was a lovely day in late June for everyone to come together and support Nova Scotians living with dementia. Willow Lodge, Tatamagouche Thank YOU!!! The Nursing Home Challenge would not be possible without the people out in the communities and at the facilities working passionately to make a better life for people living with dementia. THANK YOU all for your support. Your dedication is an inspiration. THANK YOU Shannex for not only being our sponsor again this year, but also a tremendous source of support. You generosity is truly appreciated by the people of Nova Scotia living with dementia.
Spotlight: Fundraiser of the Year Parkstone Enhanced Care Parkstone Enhanced Care has been hosting a Walk event for the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia for many years. They have been a dedicated supporter to many of our fundraising efforts. And every year, every event, they do an amazing job. This year, they wanted to do something different; switch up their usual fundraising efforts with new ideas. Their fundraising kicked off with a raffle for Monster Jam tickets that were donated by a staff member. This raffle raised $121.00. Next was a Bake Sale that raised $600.00. The raffle and the bake sale were all strategies that had been proven in the past. But then they decided to go out of their comfort zone and held a new event; they called it Evening to Remember. The evening included a cash prize Bingo, a Silent Auction and a 50/50 draw. The night was very well attended by Parkstone clients, staff, friends and family and in total $2,018.00 was raised that night! In total, Parkstone s month-long fundraising efforts resulted in raising $3,916.00 for the Alzheimer s Society more than doubling the amount raised the previous year! Jennifer Kirby, Recreation and Volunteer Coordinator, Parkstone Enhanced Care. Congratulations Parkstone for being innovative leaders in fundraising and proving that new ideas can result in big rewards!!!

Here is a tip that will help everyone produce a successful event, no matter how big or small you want it to be: Form a Walk Committee. I know this might not be the most innovative idea, it has been around for a while, but in talking to many of our supporters, I have realized that most of these events are the result of one person s hard work. Why not form a small committee made up of staff members, family members, community leaders, volunteers, and other people from other local organizations. Doing this allows the Coordinator of the event to rely on other people s strengths and delegate tasks so that not all responsibility falls to one person. This is also a great way to involve the community, if that is something you are interested in doing. Walk for Alzheimers Presenting Sponsor Thank you, Dawn Boudrot
