Mission & Areas Served Statements Mission Horns For Kids supports deserving school music programs throughout Connecticut. Our main purpose is to encourage children to experience the thrill of performing music in school, and as a life-long activity. H4K raises funds through private and corporate contributions -- and awards clean, playable instruments to deserving school music programs throughout Connecticut. We accept donations of new and gently used instruments, have them refurbished, and distribute them to deserving Connecticut schools. Background In 1994, Horns For Kids was inaugurated by The Great Connecticut Jazz Festival, a 501(c)3 corporation, as an educational outreach program to provide instruments, sheet music, and funding for workshops and summer music programs to Connecticut students encouraging the playing of traditional jazz music. In June, 2003, the Jazz Festival appointed two new co-directors for the Horns For Kids program. Both retired Connecticut public school music teachers, they broadened the scope of the program to impact more students in more school music programs. In July, 2011, the program became independent from the Jazz Festival as Horns For Kids, Inc., a tax-exempt 501(c)3 Connecticut corporation. The same two co-directors make up the Board of Directors. As a statewide charitable organization, Horns For Kids accepts donations of new and gently used instruments, has them refurbished, and distributes them to deserving Connecticut schools based on need. Our efforts are based on the belief that every child should have the opportunity to experience the thrill of making music. Though Connecticut is an affluent state, H4K has found through its school application process, that there are many school districts with severe budget constraints for the arts. Teachers tell us that there continue to be reductions of music staff, elimination of music programs (i.e. elimination of elementary band program, high school choir, string programs, jazz band, etc.), and reduced budgets. And, of course with the high jobless rates, there are more and more families that cannot afford to rent or buy a musical instrument for their child. Since the spring of 2003, Horns For Kids has awarded over 800 new and refurbished musical instruments to more than 350 different Connecticut schools. In the last ten years, H4K has impacted thousands of students throughout Connecticut, making it possible for them to experience the thrill of making music in school and as a lifelong activity. Impact Accomplishments 9/1/12-9/1/13: Awarded 120 instruments to 96 different CT schools Increased number of schools that applied for instruments Increased number of student and private fundraisers for Horns For Kids Continued relationship with Ronald McDonald House Charities of Connecticut and Western Massachusetts Goals for current year: To award more new and refurbished musical instruments to schools, based on need Increase number of schools that apply Increase publicity in newspapers and broadcast media, to encourage more people to donate gently used instruments Encourage teachers to share success stories about students using instruments awarded their school Seek additional sources of funding To maintain adequate funds for the repair of donated instruments (every instrument awarded must be clean, playable and in excellent condition) 2
Needs Needs: To maintain adequate funds available for repair of donated instruments. To be able to purchase new and/or refurbished instruments to supplement those received as donations to H4K. In 2012, the total cost of instrument repair and supplemental instruments purchased was $7988.48. We are looking to increase this amount so more instruments are available to schools. Programs Programs Horns For Kids Description We have only one program and objective: to award refurbished and new musical instruments to deserving school music programs throughout Connecticut. Budget $0.00 Category / Population Served / / Program Comments CEO Comments The program continues to grow each year. As a result, more schools come to depend on Horns For Kids to supply instruments. Our biggest challenge is to increase the number of gently used instruments the public donates, and then have adequate funds to have them refurbished. The need for instruments is greater than Horns For Kids can presently supply. We will work on getting the word out to the public that their instrument donations are needed. 5
