Academic Calendar The academic calendar provides a framework for the educational program and determines the pattern of campus life. There are two semesters each lasting 13 weeks. Contracts are as a rule allocated and must be accepted for full semesters. Autumn semester: 1 October - 31 January. Spring semester: 17 February - 30 May. Exam period: At the end of each semester (usually February and June). Exact dates are determined by the University Senate. Every semester has two exam periods: Fall semester courses are examined during the exam period January-February and resit exams are held in September; Spring semester courses are examined during the exam period of June and re-sit exams are held in September. Please take into account any special deadlines that you might have. GETTING A STUDENT VISA If you are a non-eu student, you will receive an INVITATION LETTER, which you need in order to apply and get a Student Visa. With this letter in hand, you should contact the nearest authorized Greek Embassy or Consulate and receive information about all the necessary documents and the formal application procedure. Greek Missions around the world can be found at: http://www.mfa.gr/en/appendix/greece-bilateral-relations/ a.html. It is advised to start the visa application process as soon as possible since the procedures can require a considerable time. To obtain a visa, you need to go in person to the Greek Embassy or Consulate in your home country and hand in the required documents. Keep in mind that after your arrival you ll have to contact the Immigration Office at Thessaloniki in order to get a residence permit for the period of your staying in Greece. Health insurance coverage is required in order to obtain your stay permit. Invitation: Admission letter Health insurance : Erasmus Mundus Insurance Scheme RESIDENCE PERMIT Students from non-european countries and who are going to study in Thessaloniki for more than three months should apply for a Residence Permit at the Immigration Office of the Municipality of Thessaloniki: Immigration Office of Thessaloniki (1, Taki Oikonomidi Street / tel: 2313309202-2313309207 / e-mail: sg@rcm.gr / You can reach the immigration office go by bus No. 5 or No. 6 from White Tower asking the driver for Palio Elliniko Kolegio ) Supporting documents:
1. Application provided by the Immigration Office 2. 2. Color photos-passport size. 3. A copy of your passport ( at least 2 blank pages ) and a copy of your visa. 4. A copy of your health insurance translated in Greek. 5. A confirmation of health examinations (blood test and chest x-rays) which can be done in every public hospital (it will be asked, if needed, at the time of the submission of the application). 6. A certificate that you are an Erasmus+ / ERASMUS MUNDUS student provided by our Department in Greek language. 7. A confirmation of scholarship from your home University that needs to be translated in Greek by a translation office. 8. The letter of acceptance sent by our Institution to your University or for ERASMUS MUNDUS grantees, the letter of acceptance from the Coordinator. 9. 2 File-folders with two elastic cords. RENEWAL RESIDENCE PERMIT Non EU students who are coming in Thessaloniki for the entire second year of their studies they will have to renew their residence permit. Supporting documents: 1. Former residence permit 2. Valid passport (at least 2 blank pages) 3. 2 color-passport photos 4. Last academic year s transcript of records. 5. A letter of acceptance from the Coordinator. 6. Financial means : a) Certificate of Award of the Erasmus Mundus Scholarship b) For those students who do not receive an Erasmus Mundus Scholarship, a bank account with a minimum amount of 500euros, in order to be able to prove their ability to cover leaving expenses is necessary.
7. Fees for the renewal 8. Health insurance Non-European Union students who own a permission (residence permit) to stay in Εurope from other Εuropean countries, which is valid during their studies, will not have to renew it, unless it expires. FOR ERASMUS MUNDUS grantees: The ERASMUS MUNDUS grantees that spend more than 2 months in Aristotle University of Thessaloniki will be requested to open a bank account in Piraeus Bank, Greece. In order to open a bank account, they need to have a tax number (AFM). For this purpose, they will have to visit the Tax Authority: D Eforia (Δ Εφορία), Department Mitroo, Vas. Irakliou 38, Thessaloniki. More details will be provided by the ERASMUS MUNDUS office upon their arrival. OPENING A BANK ACCOUNT Foreign students can open a bank account (in Euro or in other currency). It is highly recommended that they ask their home bank in order to know if it is associated to a Greek one. In Greece, the payments in cash take place only in Euros A branch of Piraeus Bank is located in the University Campus, where most of Erasmus students open a bank account. Specifically for students: any document confirming student status (provided by the Erasmus Office), such as a certificate of attendance issued by the student s educational institution, as above, student identity card or special discount card (OASA).. Tax number STUDENT RESTAURANT Our university offers free meals per day (breakfast, lunch and supper) at the Student Restaurant. Visiting students can benefit from the Students restaurant, which is open during the academic year every day from Monday to Sunday. http://www.auth.gr/en/units/8177 For that service, students have to submit to the Meals Service of the University Students' Club the relevant certificate obtained by the Secretariat upon their registration, their student identification card passo (which will be stamped) and one photograph. ACCOMMODATION The Department of European Educational Programs of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki informs you that since the majority of incoming Erasmus students shows preference to private accommodation and we had quite a few vacancies at our dormitories, we have decided not to renew their contracts. Nevertheless, our Office, in order to assist the Erasmus students as much as possible, provides information of housing rentals on its website: http://new.eurep.auth.gr/en/accommodation-list. In addition to the infos above, students can visit the following link, in order to find a short term, or even a long term apartment: http://www.smartstudio.gr Thessaloniki may be reached by plane, train or bus GETTING TO THESSALONIKI By plane: The easiest way to get to Thessaloniki is by a direct fly to the city s airport called Makedonia International Airport (www.thessalonikiairport.gr/) serving both international and domestic flights. Most major airline companies have direct flights to Thessaloniki or flights via Athens. The Thessaloniki airport (SKG) is the second biggest airport in Greece, located 14km east of the city center.
By train: The National Railway Company is called OSE (www.ose.gr). Thessaloniki s Railway Station is centrally located (28, Monastiriou str.) and is conveniently connected with the rest of the city via public transportation. If you are coming to Thessaloniki via Athens the Express or Intercity trains are suggested in order to travel quicker. By bus: The National Bus Company is called KTEL (www.ktel.org). If you are coming to Thessaloniki via Athens, it is a 511km (approximately 6 hours) journey. In order to travel by bus to Thessaloniki or from Thessaloniki to any destination in Greece you may find all the necessary information by contacting the Makedonia Intercity bus station (KTEL) of Thessaloniki (www.ktelmakedonia.gr). By ship: Thessaloniki s port is connected by sea with other major ports and islands. (www.thpa.gr) COST OF LIVING Thessaloniki is known as a friendly city with an active cultural life. Beyond the museums, there are numerous movie theaters, (foreign films are screened with subtitles), several theaters, a state and a city orchestra, cafes, restaurants and bars. It is estimated that, on the average, a Greek student spends at least 600 Euro per month for private accommodation, utilities, food and transportation. University Gym The University Gym (about 22 acres), including an indoor athletic center, is open to students and staff and operates from September to June. All students have the opportunity to exercise and take part in various sports such as Keep-fit, floor gymnastics for female students (modern, classical aerobic), gymnastics, basketball, volleyball, handball, athletics, football, table tennis, weightlifting, ski, water sports (swimming, water polo) and Greek traditional dances. The Sport Centre organizes annual internal championships for many different sports, and it also participates successfully in all inter-university national championships organized by the Sport Committee for Higher Education. A total of 150 students participate in A.U.Th. Sport teams. The Sport Centre has also a traditional Greek dancing group. A.U.T.H Camping facilities During summer the students can use the A.U.T.H. camping facilities at Poseidi in Chalkidiki, a summer resort at a distance of about 150 km from Thessaloniki, at a very low cost. The Camping facilities include sports and entertainment facilities, hygiene facilities, restaurant, two life-guard towers, fire-protection, a beach bar, a students kiosk, and a small convenience store.
