John and Virginia McFadden John and Virginia have been married for 65 years. John says, we re still taking care of each other. Virginia and John were both born in St. Paul, Minnesota. As a very young girl Virginia took ballet, tap, and ballroom dance lessons. She danced in competition, and performed at various venues. Virginia was considered a Professional dancer. She worked as a secretary for Prudential Insurance company for five years. She later went to work for The Catholic Publishing Company of Minnesota, they published children s books. She met John at an event the company was having, they married three years later in1949. Besides her love for dancing, she enjoyed going to movies with friends. John attended St. Thomas University in Minnesota majoring in Business Administration. He went to work for Brown and Bigelow as an Assistant Budget Director. Prior to marring Virginia he and his buddies went to every baseball game possible and enjoyed playing it whenever they could. John and Virginia enjoyed going to movies and visiting with friends. John and Virginia have four children, Marilyn (Micky), Dennis, Ronald, and Therese. They moved to Los Angeles with the B & B company where John became the Financial Manager. He later established his own business as a Consultant Specialist with mergers and acquisitions. John and Virginia were very involved in the kids school activities and attending baseball games continued to be of importance to the family. Their son Dennis became a highly successful Architect in California. Ronald is a CPA and Financial Vice President for Zone, a high tech computer company. Both Micky and Therese work outside and inside the home. It is really nice to see Virginia and John light up with pride when speaking about their children and their five grandchildren. History of Bingo... The game s history can be traced back to 1530, to an Italian lottery game called Lo Giuoco del Lotto D Italia, which is still played every Saturday in Italy. From Italy the game was introduced to France in the late 1770s, where it was called Le Lotto, a game played among wealthy Frenchman. The Germans also played a version of the game in the 1800s, but they used it as a child s game to help students learn math, spelling and history. When the game reached North America in 1929, it became known as beano. It was a country fair game played near Atlanta, Georgia where a dealer would select numbered discs from a cigar box and players would mark their cards with beans. They yelled beano if they won. A New York salesman named Edwin Lowe renamed it bingo after he overheard someone accidentally yell bingo. He hired a Columbia University professor, Carl Leffler, to help him increase the number of combinations in bingo cards. By 1930, Leffler had invented 6,000 different bingo cards. It is said that he then went insane. We can all understand that. Juanita Vargas, Dining Services Juanita has become a culinary carving artist. She is holding some of the vegetables she has designed that adorns the salad bar. She does an excellent job, and the resident s adore her. She can always be counted on to do more than what is expected. Juanita has 2 daughters, Nancy age 20 and Jessica 16, and a son Jeremiah almost 2 years old. She enjoys being with her family and walking her two dogs, Tiny and Roseanna. Lately Juanita has been getting computer smart researching vegetable and fruit art. Vintage is so very happy you joined our team 12 years ago Juanita. You are appreciated and loved by all. Thank you for all you do. céxàëá VÉÜÇxÜAAA TT Stars, by A. Joyce Kilmer Bright stars, yellow stars, flashing through the air, Are you errant strands of Lady Mary s hair? As she slits the cloudy veil and bends down through, Do you fall across her cheeks and over heaven too? Gay stars, little eyes, you are little eyes, Eyes of baby angels playing in the skies. Now and then a winged child turns his merry face Down toward the spinning world what a funny place! John Barry 8/4 Richard Morris 8/5 Margo Down 8/6 Bill Swayer 8/16 Daniel Lastra 8/16 Bella Palmer 8/19 Jesus Christ came from the Cross (Christ receive my soul) In each perfect hand and foot there was a bloody hole. Four great iron spikes there were, red and never dry, Michael plucked them from the Cross and set them in the sky. Christ s troop, Mary s guard, God s own men, Draw your swords and strike at hell and strike again. Every steel-born spark that flies where God s battles are, Flashes past the face of God, and is a star. Requested by Jim Gaughan, Resident Watch for resident or staff poem next month.
