I attended the Federation of Māori Authorities conference and people were coming up and talking to me about how they can help me get ahead. Only about a month after the award I was offered a huge opportunity working for a farm owner of 950 cows with a 300 hectare run off which I accepted. Grow up o tender youth for the days destined to you Your hands given to the tools of the pakeha as a means to sustain and support you Your heart to the treasures of your ancestors as a plume for your head Your spirit given to God the maker of all things. This whakataukī (proverb) was first written by Sir Apirana Ngata (Ngāti Porou) in a young woman s autograph book. Her name was Rangi Bennet and he wrote it to encourage her in her education and to achieve the highest ideals of life. Ngata believed Māori advancement would benefit by reapplying learnings from Te Ao Pākehā (the Pākehā World) to Te Ao Māori (the Māori world), ideally resulting in a positive effect on both cultures.
