AOTEAROA NEW ZEALAND MĀORI BUSINESS LEADERS AWARDS Call for nominations Nominations must be received by 20 March 2015 1. Introduction Nominations are invited for the Aotearoa New Zealand Māori Business Leaders Awards. The Awards are hosted by the University of Auckland Business School and are New Zealand's premier Māori business awards events. The Awards have been going for 10 years and have grown in size and stature each year, with the awards reception attracting politicians, Māori business and community leaders, iwi organisations, government agencies, Māori Business School alumni, Business School partners and friends, family and business associates of the award winners, and current Māori students and faculty members. 2. Vision The Aotearoa New Zealand Māori Business Leaders Awards recognise and celebrate outstanding Māori excellence and success in business. Individuals and organisations are honoured for their contributions to the advancement of Māori enterprise in New Zealand and around the world. 3. Objectives Manaakitanga Māori traditionally means to honour one s guests with hospitality. As the premier event recognising Māori business success in New Zealand and around the world, the Aotearoa New Zealand Māori Business Leaders Awards : Honour outstanding individual Māori success in business, in Aotearoa New Zealand and around the world. Profile and promote excellence and success of Māori enterprise and business. Inspire rangatahi and current Māori University of Auckland Business School students by providing Māori role models who are successful in both the business world and academia. Promote Ngā Taniwha, the 3000+ Māori University of Auckland Business School alumni cohort through facilitating local and global business networking, events, seminars and symposia. Recognise and celebrate Māori academic achievement at the University of Auckland Business School. Recognise, celebrate and honour all the candidates nominated for Awards. 4. Awards and criteria 4.1 For individuals Māori Business Leaders Award (Supreme Award) Outstanding Māori Business Leaders Award Recognises an individual who has demonstrated outstanding leadership characteristics including: strong vision, inclusive management, governance skills, altruism, humility, taking a long-term view and making collaborative decisions for the common good. Nominations should explain how these skills have been demonstrated, with examples.
Māori Business Leaders Award (Category Award) Emerging Māori Business Leaders Award Recognises an individual aged between 20-40 years who has achieved significant success in his or her career to date and is emerging as a business leader now and in the future. Nominations should describe the success to date, with examples. Māori Woman Business Leaders Award Recognises a Māori woman who has achieved significant success in her career. Nominations should describe the success, with examples. Alumni Award Dame Mira Szászy Māori Alumni Award Recognises outstanding achievement by graduates of the University of Auckland Business School, and excellence in tribal and business endeavours nationwide and internationally. The recipient will have achieved significant success in his or her career. Nominations should describe the success, with examples. 4.2 For organisations Outstanding Māori Business Leadership Award Recognises an organisation that is a leader by demonstrating outstanding excellence and success across the following four pillars: governance, leadership, management and strategy business performance social/community/ngā tikanga Māori environment/sustainability Nominations should describe how the organisation has achieved excellence and success across these pillars, with examples. 5. Eligibility 5.1 For individuals To be eligible for a Māori Business Leaders Award, an individual must be in an ownership, leadership or governance position in one (or more) of the following: Whānau-owned business Māori trust or incorporation Company, partnership or joint venture with Māori shareholders Iwi or hapū entity Any other kind of business entity and must be and identify as Māori or part Māori. To be eligible for the alumni Award, individuals must have attended the University of Auckland Business School. 5.2 For organisations To be eligible for a Māori Business Leadership Award, an organisation must be one of the following: Whānau-owned business Māori trust or incorporation Company, partnership or joint venture with Māori shareholders Iwi or hapū entity
6. The nomination process A nomination may be made by an individual, group or organisation. If more than one nomination is submitted by the same person, group or organisation, each submission must be made separately. An individual or organisation can nominate themselves. An individual can be nominated for more than one award, but it must be clearly explained how they meet the criteria for each award. A nominator is to provide the name and contact details of the nominee, confirmation that they are eligible, and an explanation of how they meet the awards criteria. Nominations must be made on the prescribed Nomination Form (downloadable from the Awards website www.auckland.ac.nz/maoribusinessleadersawards.) Nominations must be submitted by email and received by the closing date. 7. Selection Selection is made by the Awards Steering Committee, which is comprised of successful and respected people from across the Māori world. Details of the members of the Steering Committee can be found on the Awards website www.auckland.ac.nz/maoribusinessleadersawards. 8. Confidentiality All information submitted will be restricted to the Awards Steering Committee and will be kept confidential. The identity of nominees will not be publicly disclosed. Nominators may advise the nominee of their submission, and should indicate on the Nomination Form whether the nominee is aware (or not). The identity of finalists will be publicly disclosed. Consent to do so will be sought from the nominees who are selected to be finalists. If consent is not given, the nominee will not be taken forward. 9. Deadline All nominations must be submitted on the prescribed Nomination Form by email to: MBLAnomination@auckland.ac.nz. Nominations must be received by close of business on 20 March 2015. The awards ceremony Finalists will be revealed and award winners announced at an awards reception on 1 May 2015 in Auckland.
