New Entry Training Part 1. - Introduction to T. S. Active Maritime Training Corps. POTTED HISTORY Training Ship Active Maritime Training Corps, launched in 1965 is a fully independent Naval Cadet Training Ship based in Waterlooville. For some time now T. S. ACTIVE has been on its own so to speak. We were involved with the Sea Training Corps who were the original organisation to break away from the Sea Cadet Corps (the official recognised youth organisation sponsored by the MOD). We raise our own funds for uniforms, insurance, activities and the day to day running of the Training Ship. We have a Marine Cadet detachment who, as well as learning all things nautical, go out in the field and train very hard at doing the things that Royal Marine Commandos do. Our aim with our cadets is to provide opportunities for young people to develop into responsible, dependable and useful members of society, promoting self-discipline and comradeship. To teach the principles of leadership and to help them achieve their full physical, intellectual and social potential through military discipline, Royal Naval and Royal Marine ethos and adventure training. We do not recruit for the Armed Forces although over the many years we have been running, well over 20 cadets have enlisted into the 3 services. Camping & Adventure Training We regularly join up with 901 Troop Marine Cadets (Winterton-On-Sea, Norfolk) for summer camp and field training. We also go it alone in the Hampshire and Dorset countryside with our own camps and weekend camps (all cadets - Sea and Marine take part). We have our own Minibus so transport isn t a problem at present, however with the cost of Insurance, repairs, diesel etc., running a minibus isn t cheap, and we are often raising funds to keep it on the road. Activities T. S. ACTIVE has a band which, over the years, has travelled to France, Austria, Southern Ireland and has performed at The Royal Tournament (1982 and 1984), Navy Days and long ago at HMS VERNON s Searchlight Tattoo. We have a regular booking to lead Bletchley s RBL Remembrance Parade at Milton Keynes. 1

Staff Currently we have 12 members of staff. All are safe trained (Child Protection Act), are qualified First Aiders and are DBS cleared. The unit insists on this and pays any fee incurred. Not all staff are full time as jobs dictate. Headquarters Our headquarters (unit) is at St. George's Church Hall in Waterlooville, Hants. We meet there once a week on a Wednesday evening 18:30-20:30. The band practices at the Royal Naval Club, Aston Road, Waterlooville on Sunday evenings 19:00-20:30. 2

PART 2. RULES Joining age 8-17½ Uniform Once new entry training has been completed there will be a returnable deposit of 50 payable. A minimum 25 initial payment of this will be required before uniform is issued, with the remaining 25 being paid either as a lump sum, or should you prefer it can be payed in weekly instalments. The 50 deposit (or up to the maximum of which has been paid) will be returned when all uniform is handed back in a good condition and within a reasonable time if and when the cadet leaves. Footwear can be issued but must be maintained in a good state of repair by the person issued to. Hair Female cadets are required to have their hair above the collar, tied back and up if long. Male cadets are required to have reasonable length hair. That does not mean short back and sides, but as long as it is off the ears and collar and does not appear to be long it is acceptable. Remember that we wear the Queen s uniform and long hair does not fit in with it. Jewellery Female cadets - should restrict ear rings to 1 set, being gold or silver sleepers or studs, and 1 ring per hand only. Male cadets - Earrings are not allowed in uniform. If a male cadet has his ear newly pierced, he will be asked not to wear uniform or attend outside events, visits and camps until he is able to remove the stud in uniform. Marks of respect All male officers are to be addressed as Sir, and female officers as Marm. Other ranks are to be addressed by their rank, e.g. Sergeant, P.O., Chief etc. Saluting on entering the main deck In uniform only. This tradition dates back to sailors saluting the quarter deck where Nelson fell. Prior to that time the crucifix was fixed on the q- deck and sailors being predominantly Catholic used to cross themselves facing the q-deck. This tradition is still in force today when sailors board a warship they salute at the top of the brow/ gangway. Attendance Subs are payable every week that the unit meets. We pay our rent if we are there or not. We pay subs to be a member, and subs still have to be paid if the cadet is on holiday or sick, only if the cadet is in hospital or there are compassionate grounds do subs not have to be paid. If a cadet is absent for a period of 4 continuous weeks without contacting the unit, he/ she will automatically be dismissed. 3

COMPASS (NORTH) (NORTH WEST) (NORTH EAST) (WEST) (EAST) (SOUTH WEST) (SOUTH EAST) (SOUTH) THE MAKEUP OF THE UNION FLAG 12 th April 1606, the Union Jack was created. 12

The Union Flag is sometimes known as the Union Jack after its creator, James I of England, James VI of Scots. Jack comes from the Latin for James, Jacobus. James became King of Scots at one year old when his mother Mary Queen of Scots was deposed by rebel Scottish Lords. James patiently waited another thirty-five years until his aunt, Elizabeth I of England died and he succeeded to the throne of England. James wanted to unite his two kingdoms but the Parliaments of the two sovereign nations opposed it vigorously. James persistently asked his Parliaments to bring about a plan for union but they continually came up with objections. Meanwhile, James did what he could to effect a unification. Firstly, he declared himself King of Great Britain, a term he created for his new kingdom. James also minted a new coin, which could be used in either England or Scotland. He named it the Unite. It was worth five shillings in Sterling and three pounds in Scots. (The Scottish currency had been greatly devalued during James reign in Scotland). Most importantly, James created the new flag overlaying the English cross of St George on the Scottish cross of St Andrew to form a new National Flag. He rejected other designs suggested by his advisors on the grounds that they were not united. The Union Flag was augmented in 1801 when Ireland became part of The United Kingdom. James never saw the union of England and Scotland. His great granddaughter, Queen Anne, brought about the Union in 1707. BASIC PARTS OF A SHIP Port Port is the left side of the ship, it is coloured red on navigational lights. Starboard Starboard is the right side of the ship, it is coloured green on navigational lights Bow This is the front end of the ship. This is the part of the ship that cuts through the water. Stern The back of the ship. The rudder and propellers are at this end of the ship. 14

PARADE TRAINING All dressing off, Turning:- about, Right & Left, inclining, Saluting, Side closing, Forward & rear pacing, dismissing, Attention, Stand at ease & stand easy, Open order in 2 + 3 ranks. KNOTS Reef knot For tying 2 pieces of rope of equal thickness together Take the 2 bitter ends, cross them over and tie the first half knot (Half Hitch). Maintain the same rope on top (red) as you cross them over a second time to tie the second Half Hitch Pull the ends evenly to form a symmetrical knot. Add extra Half Hitches for safety The Square (Reef) Knot is composed of two loops which engage each other. When the two ends of either rope are pulled, the knot can deform so that the other rope makes two Half Hitches around the tight one and can slide 15

Round turn and 2 half hitches For securing a boat to a ring on a jetty or buoy. Pass the end round the post once and then around a second time. This takes the strain while you tie the knot. Go round the standing end. to make the first Half Hitch. Pull this tight. Continue round in the same direction to make the second Half Hitch. Pull this tight to complete the knot. The round turn and two Half Hitches is essentially a round turn fastened back to the standing end with a Clove Hitch. It is similar to the Anchor bend but the first Half Hitch is not passed under the first turn around the post. 16

Clove hitch A Bugle cord knot, and for securing to a spar. Form a loop in the rope. Then form a second loop - the same way up. Both loops should be identical. Then cross the loops one above the other so they form a knot instead of just two loops stacked on each other. Place the knot over the post. The Clove Hitch is composed of Half Hitches stacked one above the other HEALTH & SAFETY During the period of new entry training, cadets must be shown the fire exits and the muster point which is on the grass in front of the church furthest from the hall. 17
