The Lilly Endowment Challenge 2017 Grant Guidelines and Application Form WHAT IS CUMBERLAND COMMUNITY FOUNDATION? Cumberland Community Foundation is a nonprofit (501(c)(3)) charitable foundation established in 1980 by Dr. Lucile Hutaff with a gift of $576,840. Today, Cumberland Community Foundation s assets exceed $77 million in more than 500 grantmaking funds. Many of these grantmaking funds support specific charitable causes chosen by the donors who establish them; ranging from scholarships to designated charities to very specific charitable programs. What is the Lilly Endowment Challenge Grant Program? The Lilly Endowment Challenge Grant Program of Cumberland Community Foundation is made possible by the Ashton W. Lilly Fund for Philanthropy, a charitable fund created in honor of the great philanthropy of the late Ashton Wilson Lilly. The program is designed to assist non-profit organizations to build sustainable support through permanent endowment funds with Cumberland Community Foundation. ------- ELIGIBILITY Cumberland Community Foundation welcomes grant requests from nonprofit organizations that are: Located in and provide services to Cumberland County; and Classified as a traditional public charitable organizations in IRS Subsection 501(c)(3), Section 509(a)(1); or Qualified government agencies. If the organization is operating under a different IRS section, that must be indicated on the application. This grant program will accept applications from Level 3 Endowment Partners that have: An active endowment committee including two or more board members A track record of naming Cumberland Community Foundation, Inc. as the endowment building partner in any endowment related communication OR A board resolution naming Cumberland Community Foundation, Inc. as sole endowment partner A board-adopted endowment goal (new gifts of $100,000 or more over five years) An endowment brochure directing endowment gifts to Cumberland Community Foundation, Inc. Giving to endowment by at least 50% of the agency s current board of directors within the last 3 years Page 1 of 5
The foundation s grant awards committee will give funding priority to organizations that have: Proven board / volunteer engagement in endowment building in the last two years. Track record of soliciting gifts to the endowment using accurate giving instructions that promote the partnership with Cumberland Community Foundation. Past participation by applicant s endowment committee members in one or more of the foundation s planned giving and endowment building workshops. APPLICATION GUIDELINES Your endowment challenge request may be any amount up to $50,000. The challenge match is over two years. If your organization is selected and you are successful in raising the amount you choose, Cumberland Community Foundation will match this amount with an approved ratio. Example: Your endowment match request was $25,000 and you were awarded a 1:1 match. You will raise a total of $25,000 and receive a $25,000 match in the two-year period. The dollars you raise, and the matching dollars supplied by the Foundation, will be placed into the endowment fund owned, held, and managed by Cumberland Community Foundation, Inc. for the designated benefit of your non-profit organization. Organizations should be clear that an endowment fund is not an operating reserve. The purpose of this challenge grant is to build permanent endowment assets; therefore, gifts to the endowment fund may never be taken back by the agency to meet current or capital needs. LOBBYING THE BOARD Lobbying addressed directly to a Foundation board member, staff, or committee member is considered inappropriate. Cumberland Community Foundation s board, staff, and volunteers have all signed Conflict of Interest statements and are committed to upholding the highest standards in this area.
