St. Paul the Apostle Catholic School One in faith, one in service, one in Christ Wednesday, October 2, 2013 Message from Mrs. Robbins: Building Memories You would think that exam week would be pretty boring and uneventful, but what a week it has been for building memories! In art class, many students are making beautifully creative designs with cardboard scroll work and colorful patchwork cloth bowls. Our band dined with and played with the Providence High School band at their home game on Friday night. Our sixth grade girls won their volleyball tournament, a week after the 7 th grade team and the 8 th grade team won theirs. Our junior high students had a very successful tryout for their first long production of The Wizard of Oz. (Mark your calendars for November 15 th.) Our baseball team became Sectional Champions. They are heading to the State Tournament on Friday and Saturday. Best of all, every junior high student earned academic eligibility last week. It has taken four years of consistent effort from our students, teachers, and parents working together in partnership to ensure that level of success. What a change from the list of more than 40 students who were failing five years ago! Our beginning of the year Universal testing in math and reading are further proof of our success from the interventions programs put into place for the last three years. Significantly fewer students need interventions as we close the gaps more each year. We are proud of all our Giants and their hard earned successes. We look forward to the new challenges of this year. Mrs. Robbins The Week Ahead: October 2 8:30 am All School Mass led by 5 th grade Providence visit 7 8 th graders 1:15 pm A 4 3 Spirit Wear Day First Trimester Midterm cutoff Pep Rally 2:30 pm in gym 4 No School State Baseball game 7 Living Rosary 2:15 pm in church Confirmation Sponsor Meeting 7 8:30 pm 8 Market Day Pick up 2:30 3:30 pm A 4 9 HOME & SCHOOL Meeting 1:30 3 pm A 4 10 No School Diocesan Institute 11 No School Diocesan Institute 14 No School Columbus Day October Market Day Sale 5% of your purchase goes toward your $300 in fundraising. Orders are due to the school by Wednesday, October 2 nd. Internet orders are due by 11 pm October 4 th. Pick up is on Tuesday, October 8 th from 3 4 pm in A 4. Tech Classes All students in grades 4 through 8 will need something new for their tech classes: a flash drive (2 or 4G), new and still in the package, and a set of ear buds. We apologize for the inconvenience, but it has become obvious these are a necessity, and the sooner the better for your child. Please send them with your child during the next week or two or three. We will keep the ear buds and flash drive in a baggie marked with your child s name for his/her use only. It will belong to your child for future years also and solve the problem of losing their work. No noise, no more lost files, and no viruses since the flash drive must be new and never used in an offcampus computer.

Trunk or Treat Time Change: 12:30 2:30 pm on October 27 th. Since the Joliet Fire Department is having their pancake breakfast after all Masses that day, there would be a conflict in the parking lot before 12:30 pm. We will also have a taco wagon and frozen custard stands for a lunch/fundraiser in the parking lot beginning at 12:30 p.m. Trunk or Treat involves decorating your car s trunk or hatchback for Halloween fun, and handing out candy to the kids who walk the parking lot in costume. There will be prizes for the funniest, scariest, and most creative decorations. Another Very Special Event: Be sure to mark your calendars and invite friends and family to our second annual Breakfast with St. Nicholas on Saturday, December 7 th from 8:00 to 10:30 a.m. New this year: a program at 9:00 a.m. that will feature Terry Lynch, an actor trained at Second City with 10 years of experience with Emerald City Theater and Alphabet Soup Productions. He will tell about St. Nicholas stories from various countries and other Christmas traditions from around the world. We will offer a full breakfast from Bob Evans at 8:00 a.m. followed by the program with Terry Lynch. Reservations will be required, so watch for more information and invite your friends and relatives. Confirmation Sponsor Meeting All Confirmation sponsors are expected to attend a meeting on Monday, October 7 th from 7 8:30 p.m. in St. Paul s Church. Candidates will attend the meeting with their sponsors. If the sponsor is unable to attend, one of the candidate s parents may attend on behalf o f the sponsor and then pass the information along. An Easy New Fundraising Option Go to www.schoolstore.net and enter our school code. Order anything you like from hundreds of stores on line and earn a percentage of your purchase for our school. Check it out. Flyers went home yesterday with the each child. You buy what you want when you are ready to pay for it, and the goods are delivered to your home while you raise funds toward your $300 fund raising obligation. Move Your Feet to Fill a Seat With over 4,000 empty seats on the Diocesan Catholic schools, the Catholic Education Foundation (CEF: the provider of scholarships for families with a proven need) has asked us to participate in Move your feet to fill a seat on Friday, October 18. That happens to be our $1 jeans Day with the proceeds to go to a Catholic Charity, so we will be sending the proceeds to CEF. Students may bring any donation that day, minimum of $1, and participate in a walk around our campus, weather permitting, during the last class period of the day from 2:10 2:45 on October 18 th. See the attached flyer for more information, especially if you wish to donate to CEF on line. CEF donates over $20,000 per year to our school to help our families here at St. Paul s.
