GEORGIA Founded, 1732 Founded by James Oglethorpe JAMES EDWARD OGLETHORPE WAS A BRITISH... general, member of Parliament, philanthropist, and founder of the colony of Georgia. He hoped to resettle Britain's poor, especially those in debtor s prisons, in the new colony known as Georgia. In 1732, James Oglethorpe was given a charter from King George II to create a new colony, which he would name Georgia. This was located between South Carolina and Florida. It had two main purposes: to serve as a place where debtors in prison could go to start anew and it served as a barrier against Spanish expansion from Florida.

Founded, 1663 SOUTH CAROLINA Given to 8 noble friends as a reward for helping King Charles regain the throne in England! KING CHARLES II REWARDED 8 OF HIS CLOSEST FRIENDS with a charter in North America for a piece of land called Carolus (latin for Charles). The king s father, King Charles I, was executed during the English Civil War by ignoring the demands and wishes of the English citizens. In 1663, King Charles II issued a royal charter to eight nobles to settle the area south of Virginia as a reward for helping him regain his power in England. These nobles created Carolina. However, because of internal problems, the crown took over the colony and formed North Carolina and South Carolina out of it in 1729.

However, the Northern half of Carolina was settled much quicker than the South due to Virginia settlers moving south seeking opportunities for more land.

Founded, 1607 VIRGINIA Created to find gold, convert the natives to Christianity, and establish an English power in the New World! THE VIRGINIA COMPANY OF LONDON FOUNDED VIRGINIA during the reign of King James I (1566-1625). It all began with the establishment of Jamestown, the first successful English colony in the New World. In 1624, the Virginia colony was created which included the original Jamestown. Jamestown was originally Virginia was made a royal founded from a desire to colony. gain wealth and to a lesser extent to convert the natives to Christianity. It had a hard time at first and didn t flourish until the colonists received their own land and the tobacco industry began flourishing. Eventually, the settlement took root. People continued to arrive and new settlements arose. In 1624,

Although founded by Peter Minuit, Delaware eventually came under the control of William Penn, the owner of Pennsylvania. Delaware was never a true colony by itself, but was known as the lower counties of Pennsylvania. Penn had a very hard time governing Delaware because the economy and geology was largely the same as that of more southern areas (Virginia and Maryland) and each had their own distinct system of government. He attempted to merge the two governments together, however representatives from both areas clashed heavily and in 1703 Penn agreed to break them up.
