Conference Description and Target Audience Benign breast disease represents a range of disorders that come to a clinician s attention as imaging abnormalities or as palpable lesions found on physical examination. Following a benign diagnosis, treatment is aimed at symptomatic relief and patient education. Some benign breast diseases point to an increase in the patient s future risk of developing breast cancer and should lead to counseling about screening recommendations and risk reduction strategies. This conference will review the pathologic classification, management of benign breast disorders, and the evaluation of patients symptoms related to the breast and diagnosis of breast disorders. This conference has been designed for physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals involved in the screening, diagnosis, and management of breast disease. It is beneficial for public health officials, administrators and other professionals in administrative management to attend. Topics presented in this conference will enhance the participants information base, improve clinical capabilities, and increase therapeutic options. Conference Objectives Illustrate breast development and anatomy of the breast. Define and describe amastia and surgical management. Describe macromastia and surgical indications for correction. Evaluate nipple discharge, breast pain, and a new breast mass. Define breast tissue density and effects on screening and diagnosis. Describe duct ectasia and typical imaging findings. Illustrate the types of benign and malignant calcifications. Describe typical features of a fibroadenoma and benign phyllodes tumor. Describe sclerosing adenosis and any additional risk of cancer. Describe LCIS and additional risk of cancer. Explain the indications for BRCA testing. Describe the interpretation of genetic test results and summarize other hereditary causes of breast cancer. Define and describe granulomatous mastitis. Discuss diagnosis and management of gynecomastia. Outline the etiology and treatment of breast abscess. Describe the management of intraductal papillomas, fibroadenomas, and phyllodes tumors. Outline the general principles of medical malpractice. Discuss risk management considerations and review informed consent. Define and describe the radiographic and laboratory considerations of benign breast disease and indicate which national guideline will influence patient management.
