First and foremost, thank you for helping work to end modern day slavery. By lending your support as a Team Captain and joining with others who share a desire to raise awareness about this issue and help human trafficking organizations in DC in their struggle you are making a difference in the fight against modern day slavery. This Team Captain Handbook will help prepare you for the Stop Modern Slavery Walk and keep you on track so that you have a successful - and meaningful - event. Table of Contents Event Information How to Recruit your Team! Fundraising Tips & Ideas About 2

How to Recruit a Team! Get excited! Your enthusiasm is contagious. The Stop Modern Slavery Walk is for everyone. You don t have to be athletic to participate and there will be activities and speakers for every age group, including children. Recruit your family and friends. Build your team roster by including family members. There are activities for all ages at the walk so why not make it a family affair. Other potential members can be found at your place of worship, doctor s office, neighborhood, etc. Get the word out. Use Stop Modern Slavery flyers or post information on your Facebook or Myspace page to spread the word about the walk and recruit new team members. Set a Team fundraising goal. Have each participant set a personal goal online on their personal site and then set a team goal. Encourage your team members to meet their goal by keeping in touch and checking on their progress and motivation. 4

Fundraising Tips & Ideas Important Information One important factor to keep in mind is to inform everyone you talk to about where the money they donate is going/ be sure to mention that the Team is composed entirely of volunteers and so no part of their donation is going to salaries. 100% of the proceeds from the walk will be donated to organizations that work to fight modern-day slavery. Also, be sure to ensure that the person you are asking to donate understands what human trafficking is and that it happens here, in the US as well as abroad. For more information about human trafficking visit the About Human Trafficking section on our website (). 5 Easy Ways to Raise $100 1. Donate $20 yourself and ask four friends to donate $20 each. 2. Ask 20 friends to donate $5 each. 3. Ask 10 friends to donate $10 each. 4. Send of an email to family and friends explaining what Stop Modern Slavery is about and ask for a donation. Always ask for more than you expect- if you want $25, ask for $50. Be sure to set a due date to send in a donation. 5. Take a walk around your neighborhood. Knock on doors and ask your neighbors for their support. This is a great way to raise awareness about human trafficking in your community. 5

Letter Writing- Email Four to six weeks prior to the Stop Modern Slavery Walk, set aside some time one day and you can have it all done. Compose a letter or email as if you were writing to a close friend. Or you can use the pre-composed email template on our website that can be accessed through your HQ after you register for the walk. Send it to EVERYONE who has ever sent you something. For emails, blind copy (bcc) them all. They don t need to know who else is receiving your note. This can result in more than 100 emails. Be sure to mention that all donations are tax-deductable. Receipts for donations can be provided upon request. Balance fact with feeling. Include what Stop Modern Slavery involves; why you are involved and what it means to you as well as when and where the Walk is, where the money goes and remind them to seek a company gift-match if offered. Early on, make the ask. Don t limit your donors, but ask for a specific range. Ask for $10, $20, $50 or whatever your budget will allow. One final thing; send a brief handwritten thank-you to everyone who responds to your request. So, in that spirit, good luck and thank you for help us to benefit those who suffer at the hands of human trafficking. IMPORTANT: When asking your friends, family, co-workers, neighbors or acquaintances be sure to direct them to our website () to make their donations. This is an easy way for them to register their donation and they can use debit or credit cards as well as checks. 6

Sample Letter Dear <Insert Name>, On October 23, 2010 I will be joining hundreds of other people participating in the Stop Modern Slavery Walk on the National Mall in Washington, DC. The Stop Modern Slavery Walk is a event where teams work to raise awareness about the issue of human trafficking/modern day slavery and raise money to aid organization working to end this travesty. Team members will walk a 5k loop around the National Mall in the hope that slavery one day will be eliminated. The goal of the Stop Modern Slavery Walk is to raise awareness about human trafficking while raising money to help fight this issue through education, advocacy and services. Human trafficking may not directly touch your life in a noticeable way but it exists in our communities. Will you help me take up the fight by making a tax-deductible donation Stop Modern Slavery? In addition, I would like to invite you to attend the Walk, which will be on October 23, 2010 starting at 8:00AM. Thank you in advance for your support! Please make your donations online at. If you have questions, or would like to be a part of this exciting event please email or call me at <insert contact information>. <signature> ****Team Captains- if you have any questions or someone who donates to the cause asks you a question that you cannot answer feel free to contact either of these email address and we will help answer any questions. walk@stopmodernslavery.org amy@stopmodernslavery.org 7

About Today, there are an estimated 27 million slaves around the world, including in our DC Area communities. This new form of modern slavery, also known as human trafficking, has become the fastest growing and second largest criminal industry in the world. Its perpetrators use powerful methods of force, fraud and coercion to exploit men, women and children through labor and sex trafficking operations. We are a community group of purpose, goals, and action. We seek to combat modern slavery, which is the economic exploitation of individuals through the use of violence and coercion, and human trafficking, which is the modern-day slave trade. Our Mission is to end slavery by leveraging the power of the community to create a forum for education, engagement and action as well as fostering grassroots movements for local change in our own community and around the world. We also complement existing efforts of NGO s, government, private sector and the community. To accomplish this mission we raise awareness, conduct grassroots campaigns, sponsor and coordinate events, raise funds, empower and guide other groups and inspire people to take action.
