Application Procedures: Churchill Scholarship (-18) Next Steps: Emory may nominate two candidates. There is no campus interview. The Churchill Screening Committee, which is composed of former Churchill Scholars who are, for the most part, academic scientists, reviews applications and selects approximately 25 finalists. Finalists are notified in January. Finalists are interviewed by phone by the Foundation s Executive Director shortly after being notified of selection as finalists. Awards are made shortly after and sometimes during the phone interview. NOTES Consultation (Step 1) Make contact with the National Scholarships and Fellowships program (NS&FP) to discuss universities and courses of study, your eligibility and application competitiveness, and your recommender selection. Register at https://emoryoue.wufoo.com/forms/m1fbsh4j1j8vy6u/ to let us know you are interested in applying and to receive important updates throughout the summer. Once you have registered, you will also be added to the NS&FP Summer Application Workshop Canvas course. Personal Statement (Steps 2, 5, and 14) Draft and revise your personal statement. Be prepared to allow time to write and receive feedback on multiple drafts from a NS&FP advisor. Advice on writing the personal statement may be found on NS&FP s Canvas site in the Churchill section. Proposed Program of Study (Steps 3, 5, and 13) Draft and revise your proposal. Be prepared to allow time to write and receive feedback on multiple drafts from an NS&FP advisor. Advice on preparing the Proposed Program of Study essay may be found on NS&FP s Canvas site. Contact Potential Research Mentors (Step 4) Make contact with potential research mentors at the University of Cambridge, briefly explaining your proposed research and your interest in attending Cambridge. If a potential mentor indicates interest in your research, ask whether she or he would be willing to provide a letter of interest for inclusion with your Churchill application. Letters of interest should be addressed to the applicant. Note: Candidates in Mathematics and Astrophysics are not required to obtain a letter from a potential research mentor. Online Application (Step 6) Register and complete the online application form at http://churchill.usapplications.org/. DO NOT SUBMIT your application. A NS&FP advisor will authorize you to submit later, if nominated. Recommenders (Steps 7 and 9) 2
Application Procedures: Churchill Scholarship (-18) In consultation with a NS&FP advisor, determine your four letter of recommendation writers. Your letters must come from faculty in fields related to your research. If you list an NSF REU, internship, or other similar research experience in your application, you must have a recommendation from at least one of your supervisors. Contact potential recommenders to confirm they are willing to write letters. Advice on selecting and contacting potential recommenders is available on NS&FP s Canvas Organization site, National Scholarships & Fellowships Resources in the Churchill section. We encourage you to send your recommenders the NS&FP advice for Churchill recommenders available on Canvas, along with the following instructions. Instructions for recommenders: Letters should address the applicant s academic strength and ability to successfully complete the proposed University of Cambridge degree program. Electronic submission of letters is preferred. Please create a PDF of your letter, signed and on letterhead, and send along with the completed and signed Churchill Scholarship Submission Form through our website: http://college.emory.edu/nationalawards/faculty/recommendations.html. If this is not possible, we will accept hard copies. Recommenders may drop off or mail letters, or applicants may pick up and hand-carry letters (in sealed envelopes with the recommender s signature across the seal) to the OUE front desk (300 White Hall). No later than two weeks before letters are due, provide your recommenders with a late-stage draft of your Proposed Program of Study and Personal Statement Essays. Outside Transcript(s) (Step 8) If you have attended another college or university to take courses for credit (not including Emory sponsored study abroad), order an official electronic or hard copy of your transcript from that school. We require a transcript from other schools only IF the course names and grades are NOT listed individually on your Emory transcript. Ensure that your recommenders submit their letters by October 11 as well. University of Cambridge Application (Step 11) By October 13,, submit your completed application to the University of Cambridge. IF NOMINATED Follow-up Appointment & Essay Revisions (Step 13) The NS&FP office will contact you to schedule a meeting to give you committee feedback and revision suggestions. Final Application Submission (Step 14) By 4pm, November 6,, complete all revisions to your online application, requesting additional feedback from NS&FP advisors as needed. After final approval, submit your application online through the Churchill website. Then save a pdf copy of your application and email it to NS&FP at oue.nationalawards@emory.edu. Submit a signed hard copy of your application to 300 White Hall by 4pm, November 6. Note: You will not be able to make changes to your application once you submit it.
