Citi works strategically with international, national, and local non-profit organizations to develop innovative solutions to meet the needs of the underserved. COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT As one of the world s largest financial services companies, Citi continues to provide capital in a way that is both aspirational and responsible taking a long-term view of what is in the best interests of our clients and the communities in which we live and work. To support the creation of low-income housing in southern, the Citi Foundation has partnered for two years with Habitat for Humanity. Habitat makes use of volunteer labor and donated materials to create and renovate affordable housing for lowincome families. The Citi Foundation s grant has been pooled with other funds to help offset Habitat s operational costs. Citi volunteers participate in the home building and renovation work. Over the two years of Citi s involvement with Habitat for Humanity, 2006-2007, the organization has helped 80 families in southern to acquire newly-renovated homes. EDUCATION Financial Support and Instruction for University Students Citi s strong commitment to education in includes longtime support of the financial aid program at the American University of Beirut (AUB). Building on previous contributions totaling $300,000 since 2000, Citi has renewed this support for the 2008-09 academic year, through a new $50,000 grant from the Citi Foundation for scholarships for eligible students. The proceeds will be used to provide financial assistance to eligible undergraduate degree students majoring in business at AUB s Suliman S. Olayan School of Business. The exposure I gained has made it possible for me to become a better candidate for banking careers. Vocational Training in Rural Areas The Citi Foundation has renewed for another year its grant to the Association for the Development of Rural Capacities (ADR) to support vocational training for small entrepreneurs and unemployed individuals in rural southern. The 2-year program provides current and prospective entrepreneurs with business management skills including developing a business plan and basic accounting; technical skills such as baking whole meal bread, creating herbal essences, animal health and food hygiene; advanced literacy in computer use and languages; and governmental certification in software development and secretarial skills. ADR s ongoing vocational program has so far benefited more than 250 entrepreneurs, including a number of women, in various areas of the south. MICROENTREPRENEURSHIP Microenterprise is the link to business ownership for the underserved, and a way for communities to create jobs. Many micro and small enterprises (MSE s) in the South lost their businesses during the 2006 hostilities. Thanks to Citi, we were able to conduct a successful vocational program which quickly improved the skill set of many MSEs, which form a significant part of the local economy and provide employment opportunities for many of the lower income segments of the population. - Adriana Doumet, Programs Manager, ADR Citi Microentrepreneurship Awards Citi promotes sustainable development of small businesses in through the Citi Microentrepreneurship Awards (CMA), offered in collaboration with Young Men s Christian Association (YMCA). More generally, the program helps to increase awareness of microentrepreneurs' financial services needs, in the realm broadly known as microfinance. Citi s efforts in support of micro-entrepreneurship in are much appreciated and lead the way for other institutions to get involved.
