Dear Sisters and Brothers, ETCETERA... Sue Chenevert informed me last week that her term as president of the St. Aloysius St. Vincent de Paul Conference had ended and the following were elected as new officers: Frank Endom as President, Kim Hardman as 1st Vice President, Sue Chenevert as 2nd Vice President, Ginger Dunaway as Secretary, Kim Boudreaux as Treasurer, Johnny Dunaway as Spiritual Advisor. We thank Sue for her years of service as president and offer congratulations to the new officers who carry out this important ministry in the name of all of us at St. Aloysius. Work continues well on the master plan, first with the construction of a new Child Care Center. We ve met with the board of the Southside Civic Association and have a meeting this week to which our immediate neighbors on Mimosa Street have been invited. We believe the neighbors will be happy with our plan, since it beautifies the area on Mimosa and improves the traffic flow, among other things. The Planning Commission will consider our plan at its next meeting in a couple of weeks. After the break during the summer, the Finance Council met last Wednesday to review the annual report for the period ending on 30 June. Our revenues remained flat, essentially the same as that of the previous year. Fortunately, because of the conservative budget the Council approved, as well as our conservative spending, we re able not only to stay within the budget but managed to put some money in the master planning fund. Thank you for your continued generosity, especially as we begin to carry out the master plan. I like to listen to Car Talks on National Public Radio! Last Saturday, the brothers were making fun of young people getting degrees in liberal arts because, not being able to get a job that pays enough, they end up having to move back with their parents! What they said is true, a sad reality in our society that doesn t give enough respect to liberal arts. It reminded me of an article I read not too long ago in which the author bemoaned the fact that people no longer appreciate the past as much as they should. We can live so much in the present that we ignore the past, resulting in a disconnected life. The author pointed out that prior to the Protestant Reformation, Christians lived surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses from the past. They venerated the relics of the saints. They paid for Masses to be celebrated for their ancestors. The Protestant reformers did away with the connection with the dead and reinterpreted the communion of saints to mean the present church. We don t need to bring back the sale of indulgences, but we need the humility to acknowledge that we occupy but a small position in this communion of saints, of those who came before us and those who will come after us. A very important part of our spiritual practices should be the practice of remembering. Over and over again, the Israelites were commanded to remember: to remember how God delivered them from slavery in Egypt, to remember the great works God has done for them, to remember how often God came to their aid, etc. Every time we gather for the Eucharist, we also remember the marvels God has done for us. Most importantly, we celebrate the Eucharist as Jesus commanded us: in his memory. Love, PARISH STAFF Parish Office: 343-6657 Fr. Than N. Vu, ext. 3023 Pastor tvu@staloysiusparish.com Fr. We have also discussed the importance of trying to keep the soil of life fertile in today's fast paced society so that our relationships can grow. Each week, we encourage one another to listen and speak from the heart and look for that daily bread in our lives that provides nourishment. We hope that you will join us for this opportunity for prayer and fellowship. Feel free to come by and check us out any Friday morning.
