From the Desk of District Governor Benjamin Ben Anderson The Cloverdale Lions Shine Again, This Time At The MD-4 Convention This year s MD-4 Convention was held at the Double Tree in Sacramento, on February 8-10. I would like to thank Mike Nicholls, Jay Cosby and Mark Silva all their hard work in decorating and serving refreshments in C2 s Hospitality Room. They received many compliments for their decorating style and the quality of their refreshments. Great Job Guys! Humbolt Region Has An Impressive Region Meeting Region Chair Robert Bob Wainwright brought together five of the seven clubs in his region for a late lunch meeting. There were over 30 persons in attendance. One of the clubs that did not make the meeting was conducting a fundraiser. Each club present gave a brief presentation about the club s history, and their significant and fundraising projects. This meeting allowed each club to introduce itself to the other clubs in the Region. Since we are having some problems with our Cabinet Meeting attendance maybe the Region meetings can help spread information. Remember Region Chairs this is one of your duties. From the Desk of District Governor Benjamin Ben Anderson CLUB VISITATION Part of the district governor s responsibilities is to visit or designate a district officer to visit each Lions club in the district. A District Governor s Meeting/Club Visitation Report each visit is submitted to the association within one month after a visitation is completed. The district governor must use the club s PU101 information to develop his visitation schedule. If there are changes to your club s PU 101 the Cabinet Secretary should be notified immediately. The purposes of a club visitation are to: 1. Ensure the visited club is functioning within the rules and policies of the association and conducting meaningful humanitarian service on a regular basis. 2. Convey the messages from the international president, the board of directors, and the district. 3. Promote membership growth, leadership development and service activities within the club. 2

4. Explore, together with club members, the future growth plan and improvements. 5. Discuss difficulties, if any, and possible solutions. It is not necessary to have every member present for my visit. Please remember your district governor has 50 plus clubs to visit, so work with him/her on the visitations. We are not only District Governors but we are club members too. ********************************************************** CONGRATULATION! The Fairfield Host recognized in the Fairfield Daily Republic newspaper for their donation of $23,000 to the Fairfield Fun on the Run recreation program. Keep up the great work. ******************************************************************* ISLETON LIONS ISLETON LIONS Pic from Left Joe and Jan Kessner with sponsor Lion Cheryle Apple, front sponsor Linda McDonald with Wadean Van Ruler, Back Patty Moreland with sponsor Ed Moreland I am proud to say that on February 20, 2013 Isleton Lions inducted 4 new members and looking forward in having many more. Joe and Jan are retired and moved to the little town of Isleton from Cottonwood Their sponsor is Lion Cheryle Apple who has been our club secretary for many years and I appreciate all that she does.. Patty was a class mom, PTA mom and needed to get back into a group that enjoys helping people. Her husband and sponsor is Lion Ed recently transferred from the Rio Vista Lions to Isleton Lions. Wadean is the principal of Isleton school. She comes to Isleton from Hilmar every day. Wadean's husband is also a lion in Hilmar; she joined our club because her husbands is an allmale club. Welcome new members to the Isleton Lions Club looking forward to all the fun we will have. Lion Shirley President GREAT JOB 3

LCIF Report as of the end of January, 2013 DG Ben s goal for the current year is $18,714. If any Club would like a LCIF presentation, please contact me. Donation status through the month of January totals $6491.16 Clubs donating so far this year include American Canyon, Briones, Calistoga, Corte Madera, Dixon Fairfield Host, Ferndale $1242.56, Lakeport, Lakeport Early Lake, Laytonville, Montgomery Village, Novato, Petaluma 7-11, Rio Vista, San Rafael Host $1,000, Santa Rosa Host, Sebastopol Gravenstein $1.000, St. Helena, Ukiah Redwood Empire, Vallejo Host, Valley of the Moon, West Marin, and Windsor. Let s do our part, please. I have $20 (Bronze), $50 (Silver), and $100 (Gold) Contributing Member pins available for those who are interested in contributing by this means. We should be taking action to donate to LCIF to help those in need. Consider honoring one or more of your members with a Melvin Jones Fellowship contributing to the Area of greatest need.. District 4-C2 has been awarded $341,052in grants over the past 20 years. We need to pull our weight. Should you have any questions, please contact me and I will have or get the answers for you. Again, I am available to give club presentations as you request. Please contact me. Respectfully submitted, PCC George Skezas LCIF Coordinator District 4-C2 gskezas@saber.net 707-459-1876 4

LIONS GREAT AMERICAN FOOD FAIR RULES What is more American? Please be aware of proper sanitation and food safety by keeping perishable items in coolers packed with ice. Make sure all vegetables and other ingredients are cleaned. Teams are responsible for their assigned cooking area and must provide their own cooking equipment. Bring your own extension cords if you are not using propane. All contestants must maintain the cleanliness of their area and sanitation of all food preparing items and surfaces properly. Keep your hands washed and use disinfecting type hand rubs, or wear plastic gloves. Keep cooking temp above 130 degrees and never let it sit for longer than ten minutes below this temperature. (A food thermometer is suggested.) Use separate cutting boards to avoid cross-contamination. (Plastic is recommended.) Also use a separate spoon every time you test your food product. All contestants /teams must clean up their cooking area after the event as well as properly maintain the cleanliness of all food preparation items and surfaces. PRIZES Prizes will be awarded in the following categories: Peoples' Choice: 1st Place Food $75 Peoples' Choice: 2nd Place Food $50 Peoples' Choice: 1st Place Booth $50 15

LIONS GREAT AMERICAN FOOD FAIR Some tips for this event The crowd is the only judge of this event, and ballots are provided to the crowd when they are given samples of your All American product. We suggest that you try to win the crowd's votes by decorating your cooking area and costumes if you wish. But mostly - have fun. Judging for a crowd-pleasing All American product is simple: the people try your product(s) and judge them with their votes. All ballots will be dropped into a peoples' choice barrel and the ballots will be counted. at a preset time. This will provide the winners and runner up as judged by the crowd. Since the crowd is your judge, you might wish to have something special to sway their votes - such as costumes, songs, or props. Be as creative as you wish. Best Booth Rules Your entry will be allotted a 10 foot by 10 foot square for your booth, and you can use any form of tent or canopy that will fit in that area. All signage and advertising must stay in your booth area. Please be respectful to others - no offensive displays, excessive noise or music. The use of firearms, explosives, or pyrotechnics is prohibited. Remember we are in a hotel area, and the fire danger is always high at this time of year. Interfering with other contestants is prohibited, (other than what Lions consider to be in good humor.) The people that are eating your All American dish will also be choosing the best booth. Decorate to your heart's content. Props and costumes are welcome Above all, HAVE FUN! 16

FORTUNA LIONS CLUB 1957-2013 56 YEARS OF SERVICE TO ITS COMMUNITY The Fortuna Lions Club was chartered in 1957 with 60 members. We will celebrate 56 Years in Service on March 25, 2013. In 1925 Helen Keller Challenged the International Lions Club members to be Knights of the Blind. Years ago Fortuna Lions erected a large flag pole with numerous smaller flags around it at the Fortuna Sunrise Cemetery. Additionally we donated a large flag and pole next to the Museum in Rohner Park. Today the Fortuna Lions Club is a small group of service minded individuals who put on the Annual Easter Egg Hunt, which is our signature project serving 300 400 children from toddler to age 11. We fund eye exams and glasses for those in need, conduct Glaucoma screenings, donate funds to Safe and Sober Graduation and Fire Dept. Co. 2 s Santa s Sleigh project. A recent project was to sponsor Fortuna Middle School with their Energy Challenge. We address other needs as they arise and funds allow. Our funds come from donations and our Concession stand at AutoXpo and yard sales etc. We have held Student Speaker Contests and provided Cases for Kids. Collecting eye glasses, hearing aids and Cellphones for recycling is an important Club activity. Over its long history Fortuna Lions provided service through a wide variety of social, community and Educational projects. 22

MONTGOMERY VILLAGE LIONS MD-4 CONVENTION HIGHLIGHTS Regional Chairman Phyllis and your editor were privileged to attend the recent MD4 Convention in Sacramento. The most powerful presentation of the entire Convention, in my opinion, came on Sunday morning when Mr. Tom Sullivan was introduced. Mr. Sullivan was born prematurely in 1947. He was given too much oxygen in an incubator, which saved his life but left him blind. As a child he was fenced in in the back yard but he refused to be fenced in by his blindness. He realized that to be blind and compete as an equal in the world meant that he must be better than others. He has proven that one need not be limited by a handicap. He has gone on to become an actor, singer, entertainer, author and producer, has appeared on The Tonight Show and was a special correspondent for ABC s Good Morning America. He has acted in a large number of TV series and helped write many of their stories. He says, If extraordinary people can do impossible things, isn t it reasonable to assume that ordinary people can do extraordinary things. Mr. Sullivan, who knows that we are Helen Keller s Knights of The Blind, provided some Gut-wrenching statistics about families with blind children, some of which I will repeat here to help our readers understand the scope of the problems these families have. 1. The divorce rate for families who give birth to blind children is 87%. Usually it is the husband who leaves the family, the wife remains to care for the child and usually has little if any income or hope for employment. 2. Blind children are usually fenced in or walled in to protect them from dangers that they cannot see. This is a major handicap in the physical and mental development of the child. 3. About 7% of the American population are legally blind, a total of about 21,000,000 people, with about 2,450,000 in California. 4. The number of blind people who are gainfully employed is about 7% of the total blind population, or only about 1,470,000 or about 171,500 in California It becomes very apparent that the effort of every single one of us is needed if we are ever to overcome the problems of blindness. It becomes very apparent that the effort of every single one of us is needed if we are ever to overcome the problems of blindness. There are too few Earle Baum Centers in our country to do the job. There are too few research facilities working to overcome blindness. Large numbers of the blind are fenced in for their own protection which makes it very difficult for them to develop normally, both physically and mentally. The walls must be knocked down. Money must be raised to provide research and facilities to educate the blind and make them employable. And just think, if these problems are this severe in the United States how devastating are they in some of the lesser developed countries of the world? Today there are too few of us working to overcome the problems of blindness in our world. One of the best ways we Lions can help the blind is by recruiting large numbers of new members who are eager to work with us as Knights of The Blind. Remember the old adage, Many hands makes light work! Thank you for bearing with me this far. I know it hasn t been fun. Your editor, Lion Charlie Rogers IN MEMORIAM Longtime friend and Montgomery Village Lion Don Smith passed away on the evening of February 5, 2013. He will be greatly missed by all of us. Lion Don was President of our Club in 1982-1983. A long time employee of the Sonoma County Health Department, Lion Don did his utmost to upgrade our compliance with regulations regarding food handling and service, an area where we were often slow to improve. But Lion Don never gave up and gently continued to prod us to do the right thing. Lion Don was long-time Chairman of the Annual Chicken Barbeque at Park View Gardens Hospital, held outdoors on the weekend near Mothers Day, where we served 200 or more patients, patients families and hospital employees a beautiful picnic buffet luncheon. Lion Don s gentle smile and good humor will last forever in our memories and his work in Lionism benefitted many in our community. Farewell, Lion Don Thank you Lion Charlie for this great report. District Editor. Andy Erickson 25

THE ROLE OF A LIONS / LIONESS CLUB NEWSLETTER TO ALL CLUBS Like a community newspaper, the club newsletter serves a number of purposes. Among its most important services, It chronicles the news of the period, keeps membership appraised of the club s events and happenings, and is the club s official Paper of Record. Club newsletters are strong tools of communication for idea sharing that can be used to strengthen the bond between clubs involved in club twinning; each club s editor sending articles for display in the twin s newsletter. The club newsletter becomes a record of the club s service history and can serve as a research document for Lions seeking background on projects of the past. It becomes extremely important when its editions pre-date the last kept notes of the club secretary. Editors of club newsletters should maintain and preserve their past publications and have them available when questions arise about past endeavors. Send me your Club Bulletin and I will place your information in the Blue Print Share your great projects with the District. Lionsbp.editor@yahoo.com CONTEST AND AWARDS If your club is going to enter any contest in the district, please turn to the Official Directory for District 4-C2 2012 2013 You will find the contest on pages #101 122. I am told that he is bubbling over with new ideas and is full of enthusiasm for his upcoming year as the President of our Club. It will very soon be time to nominate and elect the officers who will lead us in the 2013-2014 year. If and when Lion Hank asks for our help and support I hope we will.
