Overview General Eligibility In order to qualify for any scholarship, students must meet the following criteria: 1. Be enrolled in an approved undergraduate or graduate program in the College of Education. 2. Be a United States citizen or permanent resident who is enrolled full-time (12+ hours for undergraduate and 9+ hours for graduate). 3. Have completed a FAFSA for the upcoming academic year, if applying for a need-based scholarship. 4. Meet any additional criteria that are specific to the scholarship for which they are applying. Major Related Criteria Any scholarship criteria that mentions enrollment in a specific major as a condition for eligibility, requires that students be admitted to that major. Intended majors are not considered. A 2017-2018 FAFSA must be completed and on file with the Office of Student Financial Aid. If you need to fill out a FAFSA, please log in at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/. You must do this before your scholarship eligibility can be determined. The following scholarships are open only to students who have an established financial need. Scholarship List Ira Aaron International Study Scholarship This scholarship is available to COE undergraduate and graduate students who will be participating in a study abroad experience. Candidates must be in good academic standing and have a demonstrated plan of study abroad. The applicant must address how the international experience will enhance his/her education in the personal essay. Martha Nell Allman Graduate Scholarship This scholarship is available to any COE MAT students who are entering their student teaching semester. Students must have an established financial need. COE Student Teaching Scholarship This scholarship is available to COE undergraduate and graduate students who are entering their student teaching semester. Students must have an established financial need. Candidates must state their intent to make a career in education in the state of Georgia. Please address this in your personal essay. James L Dickerson Scholarship This scholarship is available to COE undergraduate and graduate students who are entering their student teaching semester. Students must have an established financial need, and GPA will be considered. Candidates must state their intent to make a career in education in the state of Georgia. Please address this in your personal essay. George R Gilmer Scholarship This scholarship is available to undergraduate and graduate students who have been admitted into a COE teacher education program. Candidates must have a minimum 3.0 GPA to apply for this scholarship. Don & Debbie Golden Scholarship This scholarship is available to COE undergraduate students who have an established financial need. Michael J. Hendrickson Scholarship Fund This scholarship is a financial need-based award for undergraduate students enrolled in the College of Education. Where available, the scholarship will give preference to a rising senior in COE demonstrating peer leadership and a commitment to youth development through community engagement and/or youth ministry. The applicants must address their work in the community in their personal essays. If no such student is available in the given year, the scholarship is open to any undergraduate COE student with an established financial need. Hubbard-Burton Study Abroad (COST) Scholarship This scholarship is available to undergraduate and graduate Consortium for Overseas Student Teaching (COST) participants, for their semester abroad. Students in teacher education partner programs are eligible to apply. Students must have an established financial need, and GPA will be considered. *Sylvia McCoy Hutchinson Scholarship This scholarship is a financial need-based award for an undergraduate student enrolled in the College of Education. With all other factors being equal, first priority in awarding the scholarship is given to a nonfaculty staff member or his/her child in the College of Education. Second priority is given to a non-faculty staff member or his/her child of other University of Georgia schools, colleges or departments. Third priority is the public at large. *This scholarship has a separate application form and requires a personal essay (500 words or less). 3

Floyd & Emily Jordan Scholarship Fund This scholarship is available to all COE undergraduate students. Students must have a minimum of 3.0 GPA to be eligible. Sallie Maude Jones Scholarship This scholarship is available to all COE students who are women who are enrolled into a COE teacher education program. Candidates must have an established financial need, and GPA will be considered. Candidates must state their intent to make a career in education in the state of Georgia and demonstrate enthusiasm and leadership for their chosen profession. Please address this in your personal essay. Paul R Kea Scholarship This scholarship is available to COE undergraduate freshman, and transfer students of junior standing or less (90 hours earned or less). Students must have an established financial need. Candidates should have a career goal of serving the children of Georgia as a teacher or administrator. Priority will be given to students from the following counties: Emmanuel, Johnson, Oglethorpe, Clarke, Laurens (both county and city systems), and Jefferson City Schools. Supporting documentation is required from the Principal of the school or Superintendent and should be attached with application materials. Please note that any application that does not have this documentation will not be considered. Faye Daube Miller Scholarship Fund This scholarship is available to all COE undergraduate students. Students must have a minimum of 3.0 GPA to be eligible. Flora Rogers Scholarship This scholarship is available to undergraduate and graduate students who have been admitted into a COE teacher education program. Candidates must have a minimum 3.0 GPA to apply for this scholarship. Students must have an established financial need. Candidates must state their intent to make a career in public education. Please address this in your personal essay. Wells Fargo Scholars Program Scholarship This scholarship is available to undergraduate and graduate students from underserved populations who are enrolled in the College of Education. Students must have established financial need. Underserved populations include, but are not limited to, the following conditions: (a) member of an underrepresented minority or ethnic group, (b) first generation college student, (c) raised in single parent household, (d) first language was not English, (e) from an inner-city or rural location. Other groups may also qualify as underserved. Please address this in your personal essay. Women Pioneers in Education Scholarship This scholarship is available to undergraduate and graduate students who have been admitted into a COE teacher education program. Candidates must have a minimum 3.5 GPA to apply for this scholarship. Candidates must be enthusiastic and show evidence of leadership experience in research and development, and/or public service. Please address this in your personal essay. Board of Visitors Scholarship This scholarship is available to undergraduate COE students who have established financial need. Candidates must state their intent to make a career in Education. Where available, the scholarship will give preference to a non-teacher prep candidate. William Gatlin Scholarship This scholarship is available to undergraduate and graduate transfer students who have established financial need. 4

Application Instructions For all scholarships: 1. Complete the online general application. Prior to beginning your application, identify all scholarships you will be applying for. You will not be able to add information or additional scholarships to your application once it has been submitted. Have the following available to upload before beginning the application: a) A typed, double-spaced personal essay. This essay should include information about yourself, including your professional and educational goals, financial need or how a scholarship will assist you in achieving your goals, as well as specific information requested by each of the scholarships you are applying for. Tips for writing a quality application: Include information about yourself and your educational and professional goals Include information about your financial need or how a scholarship will assist you in achieving your goals Make sure to address all of the specific information requested by each of the scholarships you are applying for. If all criteria are not met and addressed, your application will not be considered. o For example: Several scholarships require a student to express interest in developing a career in the state of Georgia. If you do not include this in your essay, you will not be deemed eligible for the scholarship. Quality applications are also well-written, creative and clearly demonstrate enthusiasm in a chosen field, research and development, and/or public service. b) A signed COE Scholarship Application Permission Form (see p. 6). c) Resume. This is optional but strongly encouraged. d) Additional documentation, if applying for the Paul R. Kea Scholarship. 2. Submit three (3) signed letters of recommendation/reference (no more than three letters will be considered). Recommendation letters play a role in determining the quality of your application, so make sure to request letters from individuals who know you well and are likely to write a strong recommendation. Hard copies can be submitted in sealed envelopes to 122 Aderhold Hall. Soft copies can be submitted online by recommenders. Deadline for all scholarships: Wednesday, September 27, 2017 at 5:00p.m. Decision notification: December 2017 5

2016-2017 Sylvia McCoy Hutchinson Scholarship Application The Sylvia McCoy Hutchinson Scholarship is a need-based award for an undergraduate student enrolled full- or part-time in the College of Education. The Scholarship was established by generous gifts from Dr. Hutchinson, her friends, colleagues, and former students. Only applicants who have completed the 2016-17 FAFSA process will be considered for this scholarship. With all other factors being equal, first priority in awarding the scholarship is given to a non-faculty staff member or his/her child in the College of Education. Second priority is given to a non-faculty staff member or his/her child of other University of Georgia schools, colleges or departments. Third priority is the public at large. Application deadline is September 27, 2017. Attach a short essay (no more than 500 words) detailing how the receipt of the Sylvia McCoy Hutchinson Scholarship will help you attain your educational goals. Attach verification of employment at the University of Georgia on departmental letterhead. 7

Frequently Asked Questions 1. I m applying to multiple scholarships. Do I need to write a separate essay for each one? No. You should only submit one essay that addresses all the relevant criteria for the scholarships for which you are applying. 2. Who should I ask to write my recommendation letters? Recommendation letters may be written by faculty, or professionals who can attest to your character and quality of work. There is no set criterion for who you should ask. However, it s advisable to request letters from individuals who know you well and are likely to write a strong recommendation. 3. How do I know if a recommendation letter has been submitted? A confirmation email will be sent to the referee and applicant within 48 hours (excluding weekends and holidays) of the time the letter is received by the Office of Student Services. 4. Does the deadline apply to the online application form only? No. The deadline applies to all components of the application, including recommendation letters. All application forms and supporting documentation must be received, by the Office of Student Services, by Wednesday, September 27, 2017, at 5:00 pm. 5. How will I be notified of the application outcome? All students who submit a complete application will receive an email, notifying them of the result, in May 2017. 6. What is the amount of the scholarships? The number of scholarship awards and the amount will depend on the availability of funds. 7. If I am taking summer classes, can I still receive these funds? Yes, please inform Sarah Dalton no later than 10 days before the start of the summer courses. If you do not inform Sarah that you would prefer to have these funds in the summer, we cannot guarantee if and when you will receive them. 8. Who do I contact if I have additional questions?
