Survivor Benefits for Reservists Recent catastrophic events exposed a flaw in benefits for family members of Soldiers who lost their lives in accidents. Two separate helicopter crashes, during training events, cost the lives of both Active Duty Soldiers and those in a Reserve status. To the right is a comparison of what a traditional guardsman family was receiving vs the active duty Soldier s family when each lost their lives in the same accident. EANGUS took the lead to even the field and won. This will make the difference of hundreds of thousands of dollars for families suffering from a lost loved one.
Veterans Status EANGUS strives to support their members. There are multiple members of EANGUS who have honorably served, and retired from the National Guard. But because they had never been deployed for more than 180 days they could not call themselves Veterans. Their concern was not the monetary benefits that came with a Veterans status, merely just to be able to recognize their service too by being able to use the word. EANGUS is not a top down driven entity. The goals of a few do not dominate. The organization worked for years until this small recognition was given to their members. They continued to work for their members
Tricare Reform (Urgent Care) Tricare Reforms are a top priority to both Soldiers and to the politicians. Health care costs continue to rise and our government is working to make effective changes. If you are a Tricare member, you may have found challenges using Urgent Care Clinics. You might have even paid for it out of pocket. Before, you could use Urgent Care without a referral and it was sometimes impossible to get that referral if it was after hours or the weekend because your doctor was closed. That is changed now. We can use Urgent care without a referral that can save you dollars. EANGUS championed this change and also worked to make Medical Treatment Facilities (MTF s) either stay open until 11:00pm daily or contract with local facilities who do. This will allow Soldiers and families to get the medical attention they need, even if it is after hours.
Tricare Reform (Tricare/Tricare for Life) Along with lobbying for better benefits, EANGUS works to keep the benefits we currently have. In this TRICARE reform, changes were made, but EANGUS lobbied heavily for congress not to make changes or cost increases to TRICARE Prime and TRICARE For Life. These benefits will have a cost effect once you retire. When an MDAY Soldier turns 60, they are eligible for TRICARE Prime (at a cost). At age 65, they become eligible for TRICARE For Life (at no cost). At that point, Medicare and TRICARE For Life work together so your medical care is at a very minimal cost or no cost at all. Again, EANGUS lobbied heavily for Congress not to change and add additional costs to these benefits for our retirees and won. This organization speaks for service members who are not still serving and capable of speaking for themselves.
