ARISTOTLE UNIVERSITY OF THESSALONIKI SCHOOL OF MODERN GREEK LANGUAGE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION, RESEARCH AND RELIGIOUS AFFAIRS CENTRE FOR THE GREEK LANGUAGE 2nd World Olympiad 2018

The and the organize the 2 nd World Olympiad under the auspices of the. The event is sponsored by the Charitable Foundation of Ivan Savvidi. Its main objectives are the following: attracting young people's interest in learning Modern Greek broadening and enriching intercultural youth communication widening the socio-cultural and linguistic competence of young people creating the necessary conditions to support the talented young people of Diaspora creating a basis for dialogue among young people who speak the Modern Greek language Participants are people aged 18-25, born outside Greece or Cyprus, and living permanently abroad. Young people who have attended school within a Greek-speaking education system in Greece or Cyprus for more than 1 year and those who participated in the 1 st World Olympiad in 2016 are excluded from participation. The 1 st stage of the 2 nd World Olympiad will be held in 21 examination centres, certified by the, in the following countries: Albania, Armenia, Australia, Belgium, Bulgaria, China, Egypt, France, Georgia, Germany, United Kingdom, Italy, Poland, Romania, Russia, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine, United Arab Emirates, USA. At that stage, participants are required to take a Greek language exam of advanced level. The examination will take place on January 10 th, 2018, under the supervision of the. On February 9 th, 2018, established as the International Greek Language Day, a press conference will be held where the results of the 1 st stage and the names of the 21 top scorers (one per examination centre) will be announced. The 2 nd stage will be held in Greece at the Kalandra University camping in Chalkidiki. There, under the supervision of the Aristotle University, the 21 participants will have the opportunity to attend courses in Modern Greek language and culture, to participate in educational visits to places of cultural and archaeological interest and to enjoy the beautiful Chalkidiki surroundings for a whole week. A Greek language examination of advanced level will be conducted on June 28 th 2018, at the School of Modern Greek Language, under the supervision of the, in order to select three winners. School

The School of was founded in 1970. It operates under the supervision of the School of Philosophy and organizes courses in Modern Greek language to foreigners and Greeks from abroad. In addition, it offers courses of Greek for specific purposes as well as teacher training courses. It participates in research and educational programs in cooperation with domestic and foreign institutions. It also organizes examinations for the acquisition of the certificate of proficiency in the Modern Greek language, a prerequisite for the admission of foreigners to higher education institutions in Greece. The School implements a series of actions in addition to its learning programs: online courses in the beginner A1 and A2 levels creation of guides and materials for the teaching of Modern Greek as a second/foreign language by members of its highly qualified teaching staff training seminars for those who teach the Modern Greek language in institutions/schools abroad cooperation with international organizations participation in Erasmus + Key Action 2 programs hosting incoming students implementing study-abroad programs implementation of summer schools (with linguistic and other academic content). The School is not only committed to the teaching of the Modern Greek language but also focuses on various activities and cultural events. It hosts hundreds of students from all over the world, creating a space of multicultural coexistence. Students get acquainted with the Greek way of life and have the opportunity to immerse in the lively and warm atmosphere of Thessaloniki. School

The (CGL) was established in 1992 in Thessaloniki. It is a non-profit research institute acting as a co-ordinating, advisory and planning body of the Ministry of Education on matters of language policy. It is a member of EFNIL (European Federation of National Institutions for Language) and, since 1998, it has been the official institution designated to conducting the examinations for, and granting, the Certificate of Attainment in Greek. Its mission includes conducting research on Greek language and literature conducting research on language education and politics conducting the examinations for the Certificate of Attainment in Greek producing research, teaching and other material that contributes to the promotion and dissemination of the Greek language providing linguistic support and assistance to repatriates and expatriate Hellenism supporting those who teach Greek in Greece or abroad In particular, with regard to Greek as a second/foreign language, the CGL conducts the examinations for the Certification of Attainment in Greek worldwide (http://www.greek-language.gr/certification) develops supportive material (print and electronic) for teachers and candidates (http://greeklanguage.gr/product-category/klik-sta-ellinika) offers the online Distance Learning Programme Routes in Teaching Modern Greek as a second/foreign language (http://www.greek-language.gr/routes).
