Your Legacy, A Brighter Future The Lions International Blood Research Appeal (LIBRA) is dedicated to raising funds for the Haematology Department at King s College Hospital in London. Our funding ensures new treatments for a wide range of blood cancers and disorders can be created. By leaving a gift to LIBRA in your Will you can help to save the lives of patients in the UK and abroad. This leaflet contains some interesting information about our appeal and it explains how legacies are put to good use. It also provides details about legacy giving and how you might like to go about leaving a gift in your Will. www.libralionscharity.org

Campaigning to Save Lives What is LIBRA? The Lions International Blood Research Appeal (LIBRA) was established by Lions Clubs in the South East of England in 1976 to provide vital support to the Haematology Department at King s College Hospital in London. We are a major Lions project and receive a great deal of support from Lions Clubs across the UK and also from the general public. Lions Clubs International is the world s largest service organisation and we are very proud to be a part of it. Who does LIBRA support? LIBRA is the only charity in the world that solely supports the Haematology Department at King s. This specialist Department creates treatments for patients with a wide range of blood disorders and cancers including leukaemic and non-leukaemic conditions such as leukaemia, lymphoma, myelodysplastic syndrome and haemophilia. How are funds put to good use? LIBRA helps to cover the cost of specialist equipment and laboratory developments. Equipment and space is required by the Haematology Team so that they can develop and trial new life-saving treatments. Once these treatments are successfully tested they are rolled out across hospital wards in the UK and overseas.

Leaving a Gift in Your Will Once you have provided for loved ones, please consider leaving a gift in your Will to help us tackle blood disorders and cancers. The funds we raise ensure that King s world-renowned Haematology team has the space and tools required to develop lifesaving treatments, so your gift will benefit generations to come. Most of our supporters opt to leave a gift of money, while some choose to leave a share of their estate. By making a Will you are able to ensure your assets and possessions are left to those you love and the causes dearest to you. If you do choose to leave a legacy to LIBRA in your Will there are various ways in which you can go about making your Will as follows: Appoint a solicitor to draft your Will and hold a copy for your peace of mind. The solicitor should make it clear from the start how much they will charge. Seek assistance from a firm of Will Writers. The firm should confirm their service charges from the start. DIY Will writing kits are available from some stationers and also online. If you already have a Will and would like to include LIBRA, you can make a simple change using a codicil. This is a separate document which must be witnessed in the same way as a Will. The codicil should be stored with your current Will. If the change you are making is more complex you may need to consult your solicitor and discuss having your Will redrafted.

Types of Gifts There are three different types of gifts you can leave in your Will. Should you appoint a will writer or solicitor to draft or update your Will, they should be able to answer any questions you many have about the type of gift you would like to give. A residuary legacy This is a share of the balance of your estate once all other payments have been made. A pecuniary legacy This is a fixed amount of money. A specific legacy This is a gift of a specific item, such as personal possessions, land, buildings or shares. Important Information If you decide to leave a gift to LIBRA, you will need the following information: Charity Name: Lions International Blood Research Appeal (LIBRA) Charity Address: 16 The Orchards, Ifield, Crawley, West Sussex, RH11 0QS Registered Charity Number: Registered charity 276685

Example Legacy Clauses When drafting or updating your Will you may wish to include one of the following example legacy clauses and update it accordingly. These clauses cover residuary gifts, pecuniary gifts and specific gifts, so please choose the clause which is relevant to you. Residuary Gifts: I give (%) of the residue of my real and personal estate which I can dispose of by Will in any manner I think proper to the Lions International Blood Research Appeal (LIBRA), 16 The Orchards, Ifield, Crawley, West Sussex, RH11 0QS (Registered Charity No. 276685) for the general purposes of the charity and the receipt of the Honorary Treasurer or the proper officer for the time being of the Lions International Blood Research Appeal shall be a complete discharge to my Executors. Pecuniary Gifts: I give the sum of ( ) pounds to the Lions International Blood Research Appeal (LIBRA) of 16 The Orchards, Ifield, Crawley, West Sussex, RH11 0QS (Registered Charity No. 276685) for the general purposes of the charity and the receipt of the Honorary Treasurer or other proper officer for the time being of the Lions International Blood Research Appeal shall be a complete discharge to my Executors. Specific Gifts: I give (please insert a clear description of the items to be bequeathed) to the Lions International Blood Research Appeal (LIBRA), 16 The Orchards, Ifield, Crawley, West Sussex, RH11 0QS (Registered Charity No. 276685) with the right to realise such assets and apply the proceeds for the general purposes of the charity and the receipt of the Honorary Treasurer or other proper officer for the time being of the Lions International Blood Research Appeal shall be a complete discharge to my Executors.

Supporting LIBRA Leaving a legacy is one of the best ways you can help LIBRA. Just look at what some of King s Haematology patients have to say... The Haematology Team saved my life and the Department relies on LIBRA funding to help others like me in the UK and overseas. Harriet Usher Without the first class treatments available at King s I wouldn t be here today. It so important that the Haematology Department receives the funding required to develop new and improved treatments. David Smallwood I suffered with leukaemia and a bone marrow transplant saved my life. By supporting LIBRA you are benefiting patients like me. Rizwana Rashid If you would like to find out more about LIBRA and discuss leaving a gift in your Will, please call 01428 656283. To find Solicitors within your area, please contact the Law Society www.lawsociety.org.uk or call 0207 3205650. Registered Charity Number: 276685 www.libralionscharity.org
