Classmates, Welcome back for our 45 th reunion. It s a little hard to believe it has been that long since we threw our hats in the air on 9 June 1965, but it will be good to get together once again and reminisce about our four years by the Bay. Mike Epprecht has done a tremendous job in planning and organizing this event and we all owe him a debt of gratitude for his time and efforts. I m sure you will enjoy the weekend s festivities. We will honor our Classmates who have gone before us and the Superintendent will brief us on the State of the Naval Academy before our annual meeting on Friday afternoon. I hope you plan on attending this meeting since we will brief you on the Executive Committee s proposal for our 50 th Legacy gift to our alma mater. Check out the silent auction at the Marriott Friday night. We will have some interesting Naval Academy memorabilia for you to bid on and the proceeds will go to our Class treasury. Class of Briefing Notes Class of 1965 45 th Reunion Reunion Motto: An Adventure in Annapolis In 1961, 1192 entered the USNA and on 9 June 1965, 803 midshipmen graduated. They entered the following services: USN 717 USMC 70 USA 3 USAF 10 FN: 2 PD: 1 Events around the Yard during their time as midshipmen: 1962 18 August RADM C.C. Kirkpatrick 31 becomes Superintendent 1963 Navy wins the NCAA soccer championship, and will again in 1964 Conversion of the Academy s traditional 4.0 based marking system (2.5 is passing) to the more widely used letter grade system (2.0 is a C average). 3 July the U.S. Naval Academy is officially designated a National Historic Site by the Department of the Interior pursuant to the Historic Sites Act of 21 August 1935. 1963 Roger Staubach 65 is awarded the Heisman Trophy. He is the only winner of the Naval Academy s Thompson Trophy three years running. 1 January The University of Texas defeats Navy s football team 28 to 6 in the Cotton Bowl. 11 January RADM C.C. Minter Jr. 37 becomes Superintendent. 22 May Secretary of Navy directs Superintendent to appoint a civilian educator as Dean of Admissions. 30 June The number of companies in the Brigade is increased to 36. 1 July Dr. A. Bernard Drought is appointed as first civilian Academic Dean after Serving pro tem since 26 June 1963. He will serve until his death 18 September 1970. 1965 The Navy crew wins the national championship. The first annual John F. Kennedy Memorial Regatta, the intercollegiate big boat
National championship, is sailed at the Naval Academy. This regatta will be sailed Annually hereafter at Annapolis. Some interesting facts about the class: USNA During that period the class was a leader in several successful varsity sports achievements, including the 1963 football team with a number 2 national ranking, and classmate, Roger Staubach, as recipient of the Heisman Trophy. That same year the varsity crew won the Crew national championship with several classmates on the crew. In 1964 as first classmen under team captain Paul Daulerio, the soccer team won the soccer national title, as well as the lacrosse team winning the national championship in the spring of 1965 under team captain, Brian Lantier. The class also experienced at its outset the period of great changes at USNA. Our first year, marching to class ceased in order to accommodate changing classroom schedules. At the completion of plebe year the entire class was the first to be broken up and dispersed to random company assignments among the 24 companies. The early stages of the minors/majors system was implemented our second year. At the end of second class year, the class was again split up in the transition from 24 to 36 companies. All of this was driven by academic program expansions, the ongoing major renovation of the oldest six wings, and the Brigade enlargement due to the Vietnam War. Upon graduation, one classmate, Ron Bancroft, was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship and ten others went into advanced science and engineering scholarship programs. Post USNA Vietnam was a major influence on both our careers and our lengths of service. 23 classmates died either in combat or in operational losses or accidents during their naval service. Roger Staubach was a two time NFL Super Bowl champion and elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and President of Staubach Industries. Distinguished Chair in Ethics Component Goal: $1,080,750 Fund Chair for 5 years at $200K/year Purpose: To provide the Naval Academy with a prominent individual to work in tandem with the Distinguished Chair of Leadership to oversee and participate in the research, teaching, and dissemination of innovative concepts and principles related to ethical leadership development and conduct. Concept: Hire a senior civilian with a PhD who is a nationally recognized expert in military ethics with a well established and exemplary track record of scholarship, research, teaching, publishing and speaking. This individual would write, publish and lecture in the field of military ethics with an emphasis on addressing the ethical development and conduct of emerging and seasoned naval leaders. Chair will be named Class of 1965 Distinguished Chair in Ethics
Distinguished Chair in Ethics (con t) Write, publish, and lecture in the field of Military Ethics, with an emphasis on addressing the ethical development and conduct of seasoned and emerging naval leaders. Organize and execute, in coordination with the Distinguished Chair in Leadership, the Stockdale Center s flagship ethical leadership conference, the annual McCain Conference that draws together thought leaders from all service academies, command and staff colleges, and war colleges. Guide, in coordination with the Distinguished Chair in Leadership, the Stockdale Center s Resident Fellows Program. Represent the Stockdale Center at professional ethics conferences and special events both in the United States and abroad. Help build a network of institutions and individuals who contribute to the development of ethical leaders at the Naval Academy and in the Fleet. Support the Naval Academy s Department of Leadership, Ethics, and Law by teaching core or elective ethics courses or offering advanced seminars in military ethics. Provide advice and counsel to the Center Director on programmatic and strategic initiatives.
Athletic Excellence Component Goal: $412,650 Purpose: provide a margin of excellence for athletic programs in support of the Naval Academy s mission to develop every midshipman morally, mentally and physically. Gifts directed to the Fund permit the Academy to acquire the world class facilities and equipment, and attract and retain the outstanding coaching necessary to develop the finest student athletes in the nation. Funds are used for athletic priorities for which federal funds or private designated/restricted athletic funds are not available or appropriate. Concept: enhance all levels of sports practice and competition varsity, club and intramural with improved technology and expanded recruiting efforts. And reaching beyond the Yard, the Fund for Athletic Excellence helps athletic programs at the Naval Academy Preparatory School (NAPS) where so many students prepare for transition to the Naval Academy. Class will receive appropriate recognition at the Navy Marine Corps Memorial Stadium

Naval Academy Annual Fund Component Goal: $393,000 Purpose: An unrestricted gift to the Naval Academy Annual Fund is the most flexible and immediate way to contribute to the improvement of the Naval Academy. Annual Fund gifts allow the Superintendent to meet both immediate and ongoing needs of the Brigade of Midshipmen and the Naval Academy. The Annual Fund also supports clubs, classes, chapters, and members of the USNA Alumni Association, and it ensures that the Association and Foundation can continue to operate efficiently and effectively. Concept: Annual Fund gifts are used to fund a wide array of strategic initiatives and emerging needs of the Academy. Thanks to the Annual Fund, the Academy Superintendent is able to jump start programs for which no government appropriated funds are available.
