"I do it to express my thanks to those who have passed and those who are still alive, for what they've done for our country," said the 86-year-old Mount Dora resident, a member of Korean War Veterans Association Chapter 169. He will lay a wreath during a ceremony at 11 a.m. at the park's veterans memorial. The ritual will feature the Eustis High School band and Junior ROTC and a parade of (Continued on page 9)

Page 2 Vol. 17. No 05 May 2014 The Scuttlebutt O ur Chapter continues with considerable energy toward a great deal of functions. With the addition of two new Members effective in June we will have 91 active Members, about what membership was when I took over as your President in January 2013! This 91 figure includes five Associate Members. Led by Joel Briggs, we will have accomplished seven Color Guard events thru May 28. On May 25, Joel Briggs, Art Iversen, Gloria and President s Column by Wally Jones Jim Corbet placed flags on Bushnell National Cemetery Veteran graves. This was part of a National effort on Memorial day weekend by Flags for Fallen Vets. Tell America is a rewarding experience both for our Member Veterans as well as the students. Led by Gloria Corbet and Joel Briggs our Members have made five presentations to the schools. We have participated in three ROTC Awards Banquets. Mt. Dora was attended by myself. Leesburg by Joel Briggs and myself. Eustis by Gloria and Jim Corbet and Joel Briggs. Each of these Schools was awarded $500 as a Thank you for allowing us to present Tell America. Our Chapter has done very well with raising contributions this year. As you know, the Walkathon was a real success and our Fund Drives have raised $4200 so far. Including this fall, we plan at least five more Drives. Art Iversen and his Volunteers deserve our kudos. I trust my dry erasure board simple outline of Chapter funds receipts and expenditures served as an aid to Member understanding of where we obtain our contributions, how we utilize the funds for donations and Chapter expenses. Our 61st Armistice Celebration will be 10:00 A.M., August 2 at the Veterans Memorial at Fountain Park. Jerry Sexsmith will be the speaker. We plan to make this event into an appeal to the Korean Service Veterans in the area. Alternate site will be the near-by Armory. Please, everybody mark this on your calendars, and make plans to come. Please give us your ideas on methods to interest Korea Defense Veterans to join us. This search is mandatory! Your comments provided for a better understanding of the War and how brutal it was for all involved. The recovery that South Korea experienced under a free republic, the economic expansion and the state of its economy vs. North Korea under communism graphically pointed out how the War was a great victory. Thank you. John Driscoll www.villageshonorflight.org" TA Presentation to you, June 25 W e have been asked to make a TA presentation to you all, Chapter 169 Members, at the June 25 Member Meeting so you can see what it is all about. Gloria Corbet will do the Introductory presentation, Tom Thiel will talk about what he did in Korea during the war, And Joel Briggs will tell about after the war and what Korea has become in the last 60+ years.. Be sure to come to learn about this exciting program; w e are looking for new members to do Tell America. Wally and Joel presented the unit $500.00 for it to use for the most benefit of all the ROTC students. Wally did similarly at Mount Dora s AF Jr. ROTC Awards banquet, and Gloria and Jim Corbet and Joel did likewise for the Eustis High School AF Jr. ROTC program. In total, we donated $1,500.00 to these programs.

Photo at right (from left): Color Guard members: Wally Jones, Don Lynch, Joel Briggs, Gordon Talbot, and Art Iversen present Colors at Royal Highlands. Carol Becker took photos, and told her Telegram story; she received a standing O. Members mixed with the Residents after the event. Below, from left: Art, Carol, Joel and Gordon and Wally. On May 25, Gloria and Jim Corbet, Al Schuetz, Art Iversen, Tom DeRosa and Joel Briggs placed flags in two large sections as a part of a flag ceremony at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell. Gene Zender and Carol Becker were stuck in traffic for three hours and went home, thank you for trying. On May 26, we were involved in three separate events. At 10:00 A.M., Joel Briggs presented our Chapter Colors at The Veterans Memorial in the Villages. At 11:00 A.m., Bill Shumaker and Bill Simunek placed a wreath at the Veterans Memorial in Ferran Park in Eustis as a part of a ceremony managed by American Legion Post 41 (see photos next page as well as cover photo). Several other Chapter members attended also. There has been discussion about Chapter 169 participating as one of the sponsors of this event in 2015. Because of this, Thiel requested that the Chapter Color Guard place this on its list of full participation events for Memorial Day 2015. The photo on the cover was taken in response to a phone call received from Jerry Fallstrom ED of the Lake Edition Orlando Sentinel. The story is what appeared on front page of the Monday newspaper. At 1:00 P.M. Art Iversen, Gene Zender, Gordon Talbot and Joel Briggs did another flag ceremony at The Carriage House Retirement Center in Oxford. (Continued next page)

They donated $50.00 to our Chapter, and they fed us too! On May 29, Gloria and Jim Corbet and I went back to Bushnell and retrieved the flags. On June 14, Art Iversen will post our Chapter Flag at The Villages Veterans Memorial at 11:00 A.M. Ferran Park Left: Bill Shumaker and Bill Simunek (nearly hidden) with Chapter Wreath. The Scuttlebutt Vol. 17. No 05 May 2014 Page 7 Department of Florida Council & Convention, May 23 & 24 by Tom Thiel T he Department of Florida Council and Convention were held at the Hilton in Altamonte Springs on Friday and Saturday. The Friday Council meeting was poorly attended with barely sufficient numbers to meet quorum. And from the content matter covered, it is doubtful that attendance will improve. In fact I made the proposal that it be eliminated. Instead it appears that the January Council meeting will be eliminated, and the Council and Convention made into one day. Upper left: Chapter 169 attendees, from left, Don Van Beck, Art Iversen, Carol Becker, Wally Jones, Joel Briggs, and Tom Thiel. Below that is the other 169 representative, Harold Sievers and his friend Joan; this was the last time Harold served as DoF Chaplain (congratulations Harold). Right above, are new president, Bob McGuire (left) and outgoing president, Bob Hebner. And bottom: Swearing-in of new officers: Tom Thiel, Sec.; Mickey Tutolo, Sgt at Arms; Richard Arcand, Judge Advocate; Dr. Henry Moreland, Chaplain: Joan Arcand, Treas; T.D. Page 8 Vol. 17. No 05 May 2014 The Scuttlebutt 61st Armistice Celebration W ill be 10:00 A.M., Saturday, August 2 at the Veterans Memorial at Fountain Park. Jerry Sexsmith will be the speaker. We plan to make this event into an appeal to the Korean Service Veterans in the area. We are going to recognize their contributions toward elevating South Korea from the depths of the war in 1953 to its lofty perch among the highly developed countries today. We will need to get press releases in the three main newspapers before August 2 to try to get KSV to come to the event. We will have a special presentation after Jerry s and also have something special for the KSV, food??, beverage??, etc. And we need to have members there to talk to the visitors. We are looking for ways to engage our fellow KSV; this is an excellent opportunity. Chapter Policy for Appointed Associate Director/Officers: This comes from the fact that the Association Bylaws change we have submitted has been approved by Assn BoD and now must be voted on by Members at 2014 Annual Meeting in Rochester, MN. This authorizes Chapters to appoint Active Associate Members to the offices of Secretary and Treasurer as well as to any member of the BoD. But, it specifically says that they MAY NOT vote. This is ludicrous! We are allowed to ask someone to join with us and to do work we cannot do for lack of skill sets, and which we cannot even understand, and then tell them they cannot express themselves at a BoD meeting? As to a Chapter policy, there was total consensus among the BOD that all CID169 s BOD have equal status on the Board. Chapter Bylaws and Operating Procedures; Thiel is acting as Interim Judge Advocate, and is revising the Chapter Bylaws and Operating Procedures manuals. His goal is to move significant portions of the Bylaws to the Procedures Manual, and to make that manual into a how to run the Chapter manual for future Officers and Directors. All we have at present is an outdated manual produced many years ago by the Department of Florida (which in fact we are not able to locate). It is irrelevant anyway since DoF is considerably behind the Chapter anyway, and this manual was more about Chapter-Department interactions. The Bylaws and User Manual are intended for all Chapter members. A computer manual designed to describe managing Funds and Membership is also being prepared. It will be useful for whomever the Chapter has assigned to this task. Death and Illness Reporting: Members and Spouses need to keep in mind that when there is a serious illness or, God forbid, death of the Member or Spouse, please notify the Chapter President so that we can notify all members and can properly prepare to assist you in the burial process. The Scuttlebutt Vol. 17. No 05 May 2014 Page 9 RENEGE ON PROMISE COSTS CHAPTER $1,000: In last month s Scuttlebutt, we reported that on April 26,we did a flag replacement and folding ceremony at The Carriage House adjacent to the Villages. Five from Chapter 169, and Richard Simpkins of the Villages Honor Guard participated. The event was also a fund raiser for S.O.S., Villages Honor Flight, and KWVA, with the approximately $3,000 raised to be split three ways (per Art Canale, event organizer, and Chapter Past President). Since then, Mr. Canale has advised us that we are not one of the recipients, with all funds raised going to S.O.S and Honor Flights. In the future we will be more cautious in choosing events for chapter participation. Thank you for supporting the DoF Convention Book. W. R. The keynote speaker will be Susan Mason, American Legion Post 41 commander (and Chapter 169 member). Simunek and three other Chapter 169 members gathered last week at Ferran Park to reflect on their service and the meaning of Memorial Day. "I think the word kind of defines it," said Tom Thiel, 85, of Eustis, a Korean War veteran. Jim Corbet, 89, of the Dona Vista area, served in three wars World War II, Korea and Vietnam. He was a Marine for 26 years. Korean veteran Bill Shumaker, 80, of Leesburg, who serves with Simunek as a wreath bearer, has good thoughts from his military days. "I wouldn't trade my four years in the service for anything," he said. Article appeared front page on Sentinel s Lake Edition, Monday, May 26, 2014.

Page 12 Vol. 17. No 05 May 2014 The Scuttlebutt Meeting called to order by President Wally Jones Color Guard posts colors, Pledge of Allegiance and prayer. Sgt of Arms presents the POW/MIA flag. Don Van Beck introduces the speaker for the day, Cary Baker, Lake County Property Appraiser. His office has 172,000 properties to keep updated with current values; 124,000 resident, 42,000 business and 6,000 agricultural properties. Property values in Lake County have increased 5% but the tangible, business investments were down 40%. An increase is what is needed to produce jobs for Lake County. Wally Jones attended the DOF meeting, along with Joel Briggs, Jim and Gloria Corbet, coming away with good ideas for the Chapter. He encouraged all of us to sign up for the Honor Flights to Washington and the return trips to Korea. Three Honor Award dinners were attended by several of our members at high schools at Mt. Dora, Minutes, May 28 Member Meeting Eustis and Leesburg with $500 scholarships given to each school. Treasurer s report indicated balance of $15,495 at the end of March, $10,150 end of April, and $4,250 at this point in May after all of our expenses. Wally Jones presented a simplified version of funds in and out on a dry eraser board. Our Quartermaster has shirts and three different caps for sale, and encourages all of us to wear the KWVA insignias to publicize our chapter. He also advised members to sign up for the three locations in June for raising funds for the chapter. They are June 7th at Publix in Mt Dora, June 21 at Colonial Plaza, and June 28th at Southern Trace. If you ve signed up be certain you keep the dates and be there when we need you. This is a major fund raiser for us and we need everyone s help. By- laws are being worked on and no major changes are anticipated. We are using The Florida manual as a guide. We also need to look for younger Korean veterans to recruit as members, so keep a lookout for anyone you know that would be eligible and encourage them to come to a meeting. We have 89 active members now. Joel Briggs reported on the Tell Americas done in the last two months and encouraged more people to get involved. Joel has been very active in both Tell America and Flag presentations. The 61st anniversary of the Korean War is being worked on and publicity will be very important. The goal is to attract more younger veterans to the Chapter. There were 4 members on sick call the last two months. Keep us posted when a member you know is in ill health; they all need to be acknowledged. Don Lynch is sending cards to each one when they are reported. 50-50 had a total of $34, half for the chapter and half to the winner. The meeting closed with the retirement of the MIA/POW flag, a prayer and retiring the colors. /S/ Al Scheutz, Recorder
